Should they take the birth certificates off the ship at Nassau?

No. No need. This is true of all Caribbean ports, except probably Cuba, and most ports in the world. Few require you to take your passport off the ship. Adults need to take photo ID off, like a driver's license.

If you aren on a "closed-loop" cruise, and are AMERICAN, you don't need a passport at all.  If you have one, you don't need to take it ashore.

Coco Cay is part of the ship.....all you will need is your seapass/ships key to get off and on the ship.

Curious why you felt the need to all caps "American". The key issue is being a US citizen, by birth or naturalization.  But  I know you won't come back to answer or comment.

And, by the way, you do need to be on a closed loop cruise...( my bolding on the quote).
