mheinrich Posted April 18, 2019 #51 Share Posted April 18, 2019 For everyone saying you don't go into the casinos because it's smoking....how much do you bet? loose? I've watched the non smokers. Their $.45 bets. I know my mom is a non smoker. When she goes into a casino, she looses maybe $50 max. I'm a smoker. When I go into a casino, I'm willing to lose thousands. Sometimes I do. Sometimes I get lucky. My point, the studies have been done. They know that the loss of non smokers vs the gain of smokers is worth it to them. Gambling is risky business. Smoking is risky business. Those of us that do both, yeah, we spend way more than those of you who refuse to go and spend $.45 a bet. It will take a whole lot of you to make up for one of us that are dropping thousands and smoking our cigarettes. This isn't a guessing game. Every cruise line, casino on land knows this. That's the reason they still do and will for a long time allow smoking.
purplephenom Posted April 18, 2019 #52 Share Posted April 18, 2019 I hate the smell of smoke to the point that if I hang out with smokers for a day, I'll end up with a cold/sinus infection/whatever every single time. So obviously I'm very sensitive to the smell of smoke. I also don't gamble, so I never go in the casino to play- I tried once, couldn't figure out how to set up an account, and left. But, since the casinos are in important areas of the ship, I tend to walk past them. I could go up/down a level and around, but I also have the worlds worst sense of direction and would likely get all twisted around. So that's really all my interaction with the casinos. What I found interesting, was that in 2018, we sailed on the sunshine. And I could smell the smoke all over whatever deck the casino was on (5?). But this year, we sailed on the Fascination, which is an older ship, but the smoke smell definitely didn't go all thru the deck. I could smell it where the band played, but definitely not all the way down. Older ship, smaller decks, and the smoke didn't seem to go as far. I really wonder if that's just due to the smaller casino, or if there are other reasons for it.

Everyone wearing a Premier lanyard was smoking in the casino...and most were playing the $5 and $10 slots and were in there for hours on end. A non-smoker sat next to me and put in a five dollar bill and cashed out at $3.00 and left.😄 Who do you think the casino hosts want in there?😍

And on ships with Ocean Plaza right near the casino/casino bar, the smoke travels. Are they trying to tell us we cannot enjoy these parts of the ship? Absurd! No. Cruise lines need to wake up to the majority of their cruisers. Either ban smoking in casinos and other areas of ship and provide an enclosed room with ventilation for smokers, or ban smoking entirely on cruise ships. jbethel11 Posted April 18, 2019 #56 Share Posted April 18, 2019 A simple solution to this problem would be to facilitate a change similar to that of Norwegian Bliss. That ship has a separate room for smokers.

lakedweller64 Posted April 18, 2019 #62 Share Posted April 18, 2019 As a gambler with over 30 cruises l would be willing to bet that over half of the smoke in casinos come from non gamblers who just sat around the bar area and smoke.

surfone Posted April 18, 2019 #64 Share Posted April 18, 2019 We were on the Bliss back in January, and they have the nice non-smoking section completely enclosed with tables/machines. It was so nice as a non smoker to be able to enjoy the casino without the smoke, and going back to our cabin not smelling like stale cigarettes. Hopefully all cruise lines will follow with the separate enclosed room. We did see many people who went inside who were non gamblers in the smoking section just to smoke of course (as they do on Carnival)

As others have mentioned there are already cruise lines moving in that direction. Unfortunately I don’t see Carnival moving in that direction any time soon based on the demographics of the market they focus on.

I was dreading having to put up with it all week but I don't know if ventilation was particularly bad that day or I got used to it (probably this), because I couldn't smell it in the same area later in the cruise. Personally I'm not that bothered who smokes where, but some ships are definitely more unfortunate for non-smokers than others. The layout on Glory/Valor etc makes it somewhat of a chore to avoid the casino area when getting from A to B, not to mention lots of quizzes & activities/photos take place down that side area. So many bars are barely used during the day, I don't see why they don't just move trivia to one of them. It'd be easier to hear too. The Glory was one of THE worst I have experienced. I became so sick with a severe sinus infection. 😷🤕

And I will make my voice heard every time the question is asked. Will it work? In time it will. I agree...in time there will be no or limited smoking on the ships.....I remember when one could smoke on a plane....I also remember years back our cruise cabin neighbors smoking in their cabin....a couple years later these folks were banished to their balcony...now all that is out....when Maryland implemented its smoking ban, they said bar revenue would get demolished with the smoking ban.....they were surprised after year one that revenue went up....the challenge for casinos is that there literally is an addictive link between the two...many gamblers smoke....I don't know how this travels to cruise casinos as many of these casino folks are casual gamblers vs more hard core Vegas types. Perhaps I have that wrong, people go on a cruise to mainly focus on gambling like tons of people who say go to Vegas simply to gamble. I do understand and support smokers and believe they should have a venue to do so that is safe for those that want nada to do with it. Hearing some ships have separate casino areas for smokers and non sounds like a solution. Last time I cruised Carnival, they had smoking and non smoking bars near the pool yet the non smoking bar was never open which was nonsense. At least it was outside. I suspect the ability to smoke on a cruise ship will continue to erode and/or managed more effectively. Until then I support all who are respective on both sides. IMO, not until some sort of "law" forces them to OR there is a decline profits that can be directly related to smoking. ...On every cruise I spend a lot of time in the casino. I tolerate the smoke but it gets pretty bad in there and the smell is sometimes awful. People aren't even gambling there just sitting around smoking. I really think enough is enough already. It may be time for a ban. I have read about non-smoking ships (Paradise was smoke free from 1998-2004) and cruise lines (Renaissance) both are no longer in existence. This tells me there is enough demand for smoking areas on ships. @Anyislandwilldo Congrats!!! Thanks Jenny
