Recent failed vessel sanitation inspection of NCL Breakaway

Sorry to see that the Breakaway received an unsatisfactory score on its recent Vessel Sanitation Program inspection by the CDC in March:

CDC Vessel Sanitation Program inspection report

But it looks like they came in just below the 85% threshold. This is the first time that I've looked at a VSP report before-- it's encouraging to me that they perform such detailed inspections. I expect it must be difficult to avoid any deficiencies on these.

From a quick search, it doesn't look like any other NCL ships had unsatisfactory scores in their most recent VSP inspections.

Sounds like this happens quite often then-- not a big deal to experienced cruisers.

It isn’t that it happens quite often, but that people have discovered this same news story every week or so since it first appeared and report it on here.

I'm sure they'll have cleaned before I arrive for my cruise end of this month. They wouldn't dare have anything dirty while I'm on the ship... 🤣

All ships, at some point, will receive a negative/unsatisfactory score from CDC and if we all avoided all of those ships, well, there wouldn't be many pax sailing on any of them.

NCL seems to sail with full or almost full capacity every cruise. I suspect that if the ship were that dirty many would refuse to sail on it.

Besides being old news, I recently went to a local fast food restaurant and just looking at the counter area, I saw what would have been 5 major issues which would have given a cruise ship a negative rating.  So next time you see a "bad" rating by CDC on a cruise ship inspection, take the time to look at your local favorite restaurant and see if it meets to your standards.  CDC is extremely tight on their inspections, just because of the number of confined passengers, but if you follow the general sanitation rules (wash your hands, etc) there ill never be an issue.  Unless the ship has less than a 60 rating, at which time the cruise line would be out of business.

And I was on the BA the week after the sailing and did not see anything which would have caused me any concern.

On  the Breakaway now. Clean as a whistle. A little hard for the staff to clean up the mess made by passengers leaving their trash on the tables and not cleaning up after themselves. In the Haven you will not find most passengers doing the same thing. When they get up and leave, they dispose of their trash and deposit their no charge towel in the unattended bins. No empty purell  machines all over ship, at every exit and entrance. I remember 50 years ago in High School lunch rooms we would always bring our trays back and clean off the table before leaving. We still do it today. Common courtesy.

This really isn't new; there are at least 2 other posts about this. I feel sure the next inspection will be quite different.

Where do you mean? Passengers aren’t expected to bus their own tables in any restaurant on the ship, that I’m aware of. What kind of “trash” do you mean?

I definitely did notice that tables weren’t being bussed in the buffet in an ongoing fashion the way I’ve seen on other away ships, which contributed to a lack of seating. But again, if pax are expected to bus their own tables, I’ve missed this fact for sure.

Passengers aren’t expected to, but I think the person you’re replying to chooses to do so as a courtesy?  I don’t even know where you can put dishes back

I have to say, I am quite confused by the post.

They mention taking trays back, and if we are ever eating anywhere and have trays (i.e. at a cafe or hotel breakfast) I always look to see if there is anywhere to return the tray and dishes to. The lack of a tray makes this much more difficult, and I suspect that NCL wouldn't want people making multiple trips to put their individual plates/cups etc away. The fact that there isn't anywhere to put them just adds to the quite clear message that NCL want you to leave your things for them to clear up.

I don't use the buffet all that often, but whenever I have, there have been staff going around with big trays that they clear things up with. That is how it is supposed to happen.

This is one of those cruise critic moments where I really just can't see how the other poster could have had such a different experience to that which I have always had, including on the Breakaway just a few weeks ago. I wonder whether they actually ate in the buffet or are just basing their comments on walking through or picking up a small snack.

I think what is going on (based on my observations on the BA in April) is that there isn't (or at least, wasn't) enough staff to clear the random plates, glasses etc, both that were left on tables in restaurants/buffets, and the random detritus that collects on flat surfaces--abandoned drinks in the casino, stuff set down outside MDRs, plates in stateroom hallways.

On an adequately staffed ship, I assume this stuff gets picked up very regularly (and I know it does usually get cleaned the second after you stand up in the buffet--at least on Escape and GA in the past for me). But it wasn't getting cleared during OP's cruise on BA (or mine) .... but OP is blaming the passengers for this, not the lack of staff.

Day 5 aboard Breakaway.  A few of the purell sanitation machines are  not being refilled. I will have to start to point them out to staff today. Trash cans are provided out on decks, why some people would rather just set their used yogurt cups and drink containers and uneaten food lying around is something  I do not find on upscale lines. I took photos. It reminded me of our March cruise to Key West, all the trash in the streets only feet from empty trash receptacles. This is in no way a reflection of the cruise lines, but it is of our fellow cruisers. The cruise line can not be expected to hire enough staff to follow every passenger around and pick up after each of them. Of course I do not expect anyone to bus their table in any restaurant, but to walk out with their drink in hand and leave it lying around the ship....
