What is it like to cruise from NYC? We are booked on the May 2020 cruise on the Legend out of NYC. What are some of the best Hotels to stay at ? Is it a rough ride from port to the open waters? Is there anything else we might need to know? How about the Legend...have you sailed her before? Thanks for your help!

If you sail from Manhattan you will be rewarded with the views of the skyline including the Freedom Tower, the Statue of Liberty and the Verazano Bridge.  The water in the Hudson river is very calm.  If you want to save money on a hotel fly in to Newark and stay there before taking a shuttle.

Thanks for the info. That sounds like a great idea! Does the Legend sail from Manhattan? Is there more than one cruise port in New York?

The legend does sail from Manhattan, it uses the Manhattan Cruise Terminal located at 711 12th ave. Carnival ships usually use pier 90

Cruising out of New York is the best port for sail away, imo. Book a Balcony or an Ocean View cabin on the starboard side, and you can see the Statue of Liberty. Book a Balcony or an Ocean View cabin on the port side, and you can see the New York skyline! If you are setting sail at night, you will have a spectacular romantic and picturesque photo-op!

Or just go up to the Lido or Sun decks and see it all!

Too many crowds!

Ah. 🙂

We always manage to pick the rainiest days to leave on cruises.

There’s never many people on deck during our sail away down pour.

On my latest cruise from New York, I went down to the Lanai Promenade on Carnival Horizon, and there was no one else near me.

There is also the pier in Brooklyn.

There is and two of the Carnival owned lines sail from there (Princess and Cunard).  That said CCL has a contract with the Manhattan pier and I would be shocked if the Legend sailed from anywhere else....

Best pics of Lady Liberty are as soon as you pass her so you can capture her face.  Most folks are shutter snapping when she comes into view, and get great pics of the back of her head.

Best sailaway city in the US, nothing comparable.  The Legend is doing some different things next year, that is why she will be in New York.

Totally agree!!   Between the skyline, Statue of Liberty and now the Freedom Tower, the views make this ex NYer poignantly teary eyed.

But a balcony will give you just 1/2 the view.  On deck is total immersion in the Hudson experience, which is like no other in the USA.

Perhaps only Sydney challenges it world wide?  In any case, why miss half the show?

Had a very positive discussion with a grand daughter about the Freedom tower and what it represented because of that view.  Always hope for good weather, our last was just ok, we will see what the 22nd brings.....

Sailing out if Sydney is on our list.....right now Venice is number 2

We cruised out of NYC on the Carnival Sunshine in 2017 to Canada. We loved that sail away. It was rainy but we were on the deck under cover and just kept going side to side to get better pictures as we got closer to the views. Even though it was rainy, it was fantastic!Would love to go out of there again!

Our favorite Hotel in NYC is the Casablanca . . . I can't remember if it is 42nd or 43rd Street . . . and next door is Tony's . . . our favorite Italian Restaurant.

Tony’s Di Napoli is the best!!

(It’s 43rd St)

Of all the cruises I’ve done, my cruise out of NYC in 2004 still wins hands down as the very best sail away, past the NYC skyline, and the Statue of Liberty. A truly awesome sight that you will remember forever.
