You have to log in ncl.com, but you do not have to have completed online check in before you can bid for an upgrade.

Unless it's been changed, you do not need to completed OLCI or log into MyNCL account, if you received the email invite to bit - the URL link will take you directly to the booking page on what you can bid for.  

 

Bid smartly and if there is a price drop after final payment/penalty - you can & should call in to see you can get a free upgrade and/or OBC (25% of the difference in fares) ... there are threads discussing this here.  Good luck !

You should check in the day you book. No reason not to. Then you don’t have to second guess everything.

Actually there is a reason to wait to check in.  It may be a bit paranoid, but why leave all that info like your credit card stuff and your passport info out there on the web more than necessary?
