Is there any interest in a pinned thread, where everyone can share their upgrade offers? Include:

Sailing:

Ship:

Category Booked:

Upgrade Category Offered:

Accepted: Y or N

I'll start

Sailing: 7-night Alaska Southbound

Ship: Noordam

Category Booked: HH (guarantee - assigned 4113, a fully obstructed OV)

Upgrade Category Offered: C or F OV for $49pp or VA Verandah for $139pp

Accepted: Yes - was able to select 5106. Cost was $270 for the entire cruise

Originally paid $1248 including taxes/port charges. Wound up being $1248 + $270. This category was selling for $1696pp when I looked the other day while checking for price drops. Score!

Not really that interested in how much other people paid for their cruise.

There are many more variables than the ones you are suggesting that could affect the price.

Agree...discussing prices paid for your cruise is considered a bit tacky..

The beautiful thing about a forum is, you don't have to read the posts you're not interested in. Amazing.

So it's tacky, yet everyone seems to discuss upsell offers and cruise fares on a regular basis? Got it.

No need to be snarky my friend.

You asked for opinions and I gave you mine.  Let's leave it at that.

When I cruised with my 92-year old mom in 2012, we were booked in an outside view aboard Westerdam.  Next thing I know, our TA called to say HAL wanted to know if they could move us to a Signature Suite for no charge!  Mom was sailing HAL for the first time and was turning 93 during the cruise.  At the time, I was 2 star, so I knew this generous offer had nothing to do with my status (or lack thereof), but rather was a nice way to acknowledge my mom's birthday.  The Front Desk confirmed my hunch once we got onboard.  It was the only time I got to share HAL with Mom because she died shortly after that, but wow, was that a special cruise, where she enjoyed the cabin, large bath, and lovely balcony so much.

We received an upsell on P in 2015, which we took, where we moved from an inside to an outside.  Very nice.  Since we normally pick our cabin carefully with fare and location in mind, we more often than not request no upgrade or upsell offers.

I recently posted about my upgrade on the Westerdam sailing from Vancouver to Alaska.  I'm happy to provide the information here to keep it in one place.

We booked a guarantee inside cabin category N.  18 days before departure we received an e mail offer of an upgrade to a Verandah for $139 per person.  We took the upgrade and got a VB category room.

We gave a lot of consideration to paying for an upgrade.  I think it's great if this information is helpful to others who may be weighing a similar choice.

I don't think it's necessarily tacky, and I do find it mildly interesting to hear people's experiences with guarantees, however, I definitely do not want the mods to "pin" this thread.  As said, if anyone wants to add to it or read it, then that's fine, of course.  What I would NOT like to see is a lot of complaining over how one person got a better upgrade than another...

We sailed on Zuiderdam a couple of years ago and were fortunate to get a good casino rate that combined with Explore 4 on a Signature Suite.  Upsells to a Neptune started about five weeks out - first one we received was $499pp (passed)...second one about a week later at $399pp (passed)...third came a week after that at $299pp which we took.

I agree with you about no complaining that someone got a better rate.  We would have been satisfied with our inside cabin or we would not have booked it to begin with and we are also happy we bought an upgrade.  However, I have no concern if someone else pays less or even gets a free upgrade.  That has no impact on me.

It makes us happy that some people get free or upsell upgrades for little money.   We book the cabin we are happy with and ask it to be marked as no upgrade.

The value of an upsell offer to me depends on several factors, so in some cases I am will to pay more than in others.  Lenght of cruise, number of sea days (or lack of interesting ports), location or my existing cabin and new one, size of existing cabin, and itinerary all come into play for me.
