Best way to fund casino

Headed out on the Sky in a few weeks.  I skip around cruise lines and the search feature didn't help me out.  I don't remember the options on Princess. We don't like to carry tons of cash with us.  I gamble on the slots, my DH on the tables.  

 

Can you charge your cabin without any surcharge?  Usually you can on the slots, but not on the tables. What are the limits for this option?

 

If I buy OBC can it be used in the casino?  I saw the option of buying casino credits, but why not just use OBC?  It would certainly be more flexible to use on other onboard options.  Again, is there a charge to get chips at the table?  Also, is the OBC refundable?  You never know, we might have some good luck and not need the funds! 😁

 

With either OBC or charge your cabin feature do you get true cash or just fun play or fun chips?

 

Lastly, could someone explain the medallion app gambling feature?  Can you use it only when the casino is open?  Anyone like the app or do you think it's a rip off?

In theory most OBC cannot be used in the casino (read the fine print) In actuality the charges in the casino just go against your shipboard account and that is combined. I do not know about the tables but you can charge slot money to your room. Once you have any money on your particular machine all you have to do is cash out by pushing that button. The amount is  put on your card (or medallion) and you go to the cashier where they will give you cash.

The medallion is great. The slots. Just scan it and set up with a pin code like normal. It will get charged to you room. It will use of your OBC first for anything you purchase on the ship. You can charge your chips to your room. No extra charges for anything.

Any charges I mean any that are charged to your room first are removed from you OBC. After it is used up then your charge card takes over. Cruise lines that requirer cash to play will charge you 10% to give you cash from your OBC. On the Sky Princess that is not the case.

You can get chips at the table charged to your stateroom account. There is no surcharge on Princess and the chips can then be cashed out for cash at the cashier.

I don't understand the point of Casino Credit. A Princess rep accidentally applied a bonus e-card I had from a promo as Casino Credit. There was a voucher in my cabin that said to present it to the casino cashier. When I took it to the casino cashier, they simply gave me cash. What's the point? I guess one could then feed it into a slot machine or maybe give it to a table dealer. Whatever. I'd rather use OBC.

Some people don't like to carry large amounts of cash when traveling.  And the definition of "large amounts of cash" varies from person to person.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh..........  So you are saying they just add a bunch of Casino Credit and then cash it out in order to get cash onboard without having to travel with the cash before boarding. I guess that makes sense if one doesn't want to carry the cash around before actually getting on the ship. I don't carry enough cash for it to be a huge concern but I imagine there are some who gamble a lot who wouldn't want to carry a wad of cash with them. Leaving the cruise wouldn't be an issue for me as I never win anyway so all the cash would be gone when I disembarked for the trip home.

i am not a gambler, but for some reason i enjoy reading these thread.  i believe i have also seen people where the currency exchange might be in the favor when they book but OBC to gamble the exchange rate will be worse on ship at sale date.

Yes, that would be one reason to stock up on the casino credit.  Also, some people like to prepay everything before boarding (for budgeting purposes apparently) and I presume they just buy enough to cover their budgeted gambling money. 

 

I was on Regal Princess two year's ago and two guy were betting $2,500/hand at blackjack continuously all night.  And they kept winning, the casino was running out of $500 chips one evening from what I heard.  Last year on the Caribbean Princess I saw one guy betting that same level but he busted out of $20k relatively quickly and I didn't see him return. 

 

So yes, there are folks that gamble pretty heavy out there.

I wouldn't recommend standing on 16 if the dealer has 7 or higher.

One thing to remember is that if you get Casino Credit and are sailing on a back to back cruise, they will insist that you cash out all credit before the end of your first cruise.  This is pretty screwy since I booked as a straight 14 day cruise (not a b2b), but was still hunted down and told I must cash all vouchers before the end of the first 7 day cruise.

keep playing blackjack tables that pay 6 to 5 blackjack instead of 3 to 2....as if the casino edge isn't enough this is a little change (scam) that can make a big difference ...if enough players refused to play these tables it would likely go back to the traditional 3 to 2 payout...but most don't know or don't care....casinos love those players...

 

There are a lot of factors that determine the final expected return, but in general, the house increases their edge by roughly 400% when dealing the 6:5 variant. In the 3:2 blackjack game, the house edge, for player playing perfect basic strategy, is in the ~0.5% range.  That means for every $100 wagered, they take in, on average, $0.50.

With 6:5 blackjack, that edge shoots up to almost 2%! So now you can expect to contribute upwards of $2 per $100 wagered to the house coffers.

I bought casino credit for our cruise in June.  I was spending $500 to get the $100 AMEX credit.  Since we're booked with Costco I can't pay for the cruise with my AMEX card.  I'm hoping it's exactly like you say and I can get cash and use it how I want.  Good to know!
