That is scandalous, I assume you have considered her being added to mum and dads insurance until she gets a bit older and has built up her no-claims as that usually works out cheaper?

Unfortunately , if say your son/daughter wanted to drive their own car ,you cannot do this

as it is called fronting and is illegal in the UK.

Running around in their own car on Mum Dads insurance could lead to problems .

Regarding insurance for youngsters, what we did was added my husband to our newly passed children's car insurance and that brought the cost down a little. It was their insurance not his, but him being on it helped.

I'd just be guessing of course, that your young granddaughter might have similar views to my 13 year old grandson, whose own views (currently!) reflect those of his grandmother! 😁😁

I’m sure you’re right!

She came back yesterday with a nice little story about her first day at school. She’s not played football before and knew absolutely nothing about it or its rules (nobody in the family has any great interest in it).

The teacher asked her to play on the Right Wing.

“I can’t play on the Right Wing - I’m Left Wing”.

How’s the garden, Avril, and particularly the rose and the veg?

I've done the best I can with dad's rose tree Harry. I followed the advice from RHS and Gardeners World website, which was the same advice @yorkshirephil gave me. I put the large piece back into  place and wrapped it firmly with tape. The leaves are still looking ok, so far so good🤞 If that fails I shall give it a hard prune back into some sort of shape resembling a tree next March and hope for the best.

I've retied the tomatoes and fastened the peas back onto the wire netting, but that's all I can do with those, the rest is up to Mother Nature.

Thanks for asking Harry.

Yes that's a good idea ,that works .Years ago when wife did not drive but insuring her to do

so brought my own insurance down .That was done on the advice of the insurer .

Another way is to make sure they or anyone insure the car at market value and not the price

they first bought it at . I was amazed how many of my own friends were insuring their old

faithful at the price they bought it at  ,years down the road .

Thanks Harry.

I think your 'little' granddaughter is extremely brave to go to school for the first time at 12. Good on her. I'm with you on the "matters unmentionable " and "different views" but she sounds as though she's a confident and well adjusted girl from her upbringing and homeschooling. I wish her well for her future. Jane xx

She is, Jane. Very much so. Brought up to be so in her Home Ed group of about 25 - socialisation was high on the agenda, and they got involved in all sorts of external activities, such as drama, Scouts etc. She’s taken leading roles in local stage productions, and was really looking forward to school to make new friends. The only disappointment yesterday was not having found a new ‘best friend’ on day one!

Our grandson is only 7, and he decided he wanted to go to school too, like his sister. He started yesterday too for the first time.  He has a little cousin who has Down’s Syndrome and he adores her. It’s just not an issue, so when he met a little boy yesterday with quite severe autism and nobody to play with, he went straight up to him, announced his name, and said ‘Let’s play football’. The child’s one to one carer said it was the first time he’d ever gone off on his own with other children. That’s just awful.

Home Education gets a lot of stick, some of it justifiably when it’s not done properly. When it is done properly, though, and there are qualified teachers such as my daughter in this group, along with academics and other professionals, it’s absolutely first class. The teaching ratio of a private school, but none of the cost. What’s absolutely crazy, though, is that they have to pay their own examination entrance fees for GCSEs and A levels, and that can easily run into several hundred pounds or more.

There are some savings though - no expensive school uniforms, and holidays outside school holidays. That’s now changing!

Good morning.

We have a couple of rabbits in our back garden this morning.

It is sunny and 16°C currently.

That’s not good, Graham. They’re an absolute menace here, too. Not a lot you can do really, though. It’s a constant battle here with the wildlife to get some of the crops grown!

Good Morning All

At risk of being a complete bore,  here's another update. I promise this will be my last post on the matter of kids' insurance but you've all been so helpful with suggestions I thought this might be of interest: In an amazing upturn of events we got 2 comms this morning from insurers who had yesterday declined to give a quote due to her age etc. Long story and one and a half hours on the phone later we've got a price of £2.5k - £2k less than the fee paid yesterday! We've put me on as a named driver ( clean licence, been driving for 100 years), thank you Sarah, and lowered the car value to what today's cost would be, thank you Kalos. In fairness, the new insurer offered these as suggestions. We only had to pay £100 cancellation fee to yesterday's insurers and the guy said "I don't blame you. I'd do the same myself". I don't understand just how this could happen though. Could this be fluid pricing? Who know, who cares. She's fully comp with all the legal etc cover - and we're better off than we were last night!

Thank you all so much for your opinions, suggestions, for reading all my family stuff and for being great friends. Hope you all have a good day. Jane xx

Talking of wildlife, I noticed when gardening at the weekend that we have 2 wasp nests this year, one in the porch roof space and one in the ground under an old tree stump. For the last 5 years or so we have 1 or 2 nests per year, they don’t bother us so we just leave them. However last year they had nested by our driveway and I had to be careful when washing the car, I was directly in their flight path into their nest which was a bit disconcerting. They never seem to use the same site twice.

We also noticed recently that we were getting a few tiny Hoverflies coming into our lounge, today I have seen many coming and goings of them just outside our lounge window into the shrubs, so there must be a nest of them there. Until I looked it up just now I didn’t know that they had nests I thought they were solitary insects.

So pleased for you and the Granddaughter Jane.

After she's drove for a year get her to record her mileage.

Say she only drives 4k a year then insure for 5k  .

Since we retired our mileage dropped so we adjusted ours bring the price down further.

Happy motoring you two 🙂

What  a fabulous little grandson you have Harry, and your granddaughter too. Great credit to their parents.

A couple of years back, I found when playing around with various car insurance options that adding my daughter actually reduced the premium by a small amount!

Age starts to count against you at some point!  Didn't work this year, so maybe it was a one-off, but we only pay about £180 for each car anyway, and that included the add-on with Saga to fix the premium for three years.

A few days ago I saw something 'unmentionable'   which I didn't post as I feared retribution and being outcast.

Then yesterday I saw something even more 'unmentionable' so I bought meself a tin 'at.  I'm not scared!!!😇🙃

I had an e mail from a Hotel nr Gatwick saying book now for Christmas Parties and Christmas Packages.

THEN today I received a notification from a big Indian Restaurant nearby asking for bookings for a George Michael Tribute on New Years Eve!!!!!!!

I'm off......

Different subject Harry, but as you are here, can I ask if you have smoked butter in your new machine? I saw a recipe for buerre blanc yesterday using this

We haven't - but I'd like to!  If you have a link, I'd be interested.  It's a Ninja Woodfire we have, though, and the smoke inevitably involves heat at the same time, so not sure how it would work.

Great for smoking and cooking whole chickens though, plus the usual things.  Wife highly delighted with it because it's so quick and easy to use.

It was a cookery program I was watching. It just mentioned you could buy it on the internet. I know your wife cooks and thought you may be interested. I hoped you may have been given a recipe book. I will have to investigate further

It's like that down here, as the buses only run on the main roads if they run.

I waited for three quarters of an hour for a bus into St Ives the other day and my return journey over half an hour. I knew I hadn't missed the bus as it goes down the road, then turns round and comes back up. When it did turn up, there were two of them. Making the old addage 'if you wait long enough two come along', true!

Just driven from St Ives to Sennen. I can confirm there are at least 3 double decker..flipping..busses.🤬
