Radiioman46 Posted May 23, 2020 #51 Share Posted May 23, 2020 My vote is to just leave it the way it has always been. PPL can self serve with no problems. Standing at Guys burgers is no problem either. Using the percentages for the population, less than 1/10th of a percent might be a carrier, with a passenger load of 2000, that would be just 2 PPL. 1
Dor1956 Posted May 23, 2020 #52 Share Posted May 23, 2020 We all need to just be happy when cruising starts again. What ever the changes that need to be made to keep everyone safe and cruising will have to be done. All this talk I read about cruisers "rioting" if the change that is done is not liked by them is ridiculous. That is as ridiculous as the passengers rioting because they missed an island due to weather conditions and the cruise line keeping us safe. Change happens and if they do not like it, they can find some other way of vacationing. I personally will just be extremely happy to be on a cruise ship again. 3

geckoaz Posted May 23, 2020 #54 Share Posted May 23, 2020 (edited) A few days ago royal indicated an end to buffets. Well that must of went over like a lead balloon. Royal has now backtracked and indicated there will be a buffet with modifications. I guess buffets remain popular enough to keep even in these times. It seems like adding servers and making it more cafeteria style is a good compromise.

My wife & I were discussing this last night. Going to cafeteria style seems the logical way to go. Why we can even call it the 'Lido Cafeteria', instead of the Lido Buffet. IMO, the lines would move along a lot faster, too.

I agree that the lines would move much more quickly. I would really like the change. We eat at the buffet every day on our cruises because we don't want to spend a lot of time on meals. The less contact people have with the food, the better. They could put up a partition where the passengers can see the food, but not touch it or breath all over it. Schools have a cafeteria, cruise ships have a buffet, exact same thing. Why would the lines be faster?

The major difference is someone is serving your food choices, as you slide your tray down the food selections. I saw way to many times where someone would spend literally minutes in front of some food trying to make up their minds, and then slowly getting their choice. Then moving down a few feet and the process starts all over. Cafeteria style with someone else serving helps them decide faster, IMO. Other than that, sorry I can't help you, and do not wish for further debate. Either you agree or disagree. Your choice.
jetsfan58 Posted May 23, 2020 Author #60 Share Posted May 23, 2020 I am glad that I was able to speak with two of my neighbors. They both are retired Physicians and one of them actually served on the front lines during the Vietnam crisis. They both agree with wearing mask for added protection. Their main emphasis is on the washing of our hands and the safe distancing. I asked them if they will continue to cruise after the lines start back up? They both said "Absolutely" but with our mask on if we are in closer encounters with other passengers. They strongly suggested wearing them in the casino and the lounges where close encounters are expected. It's make me feel a bit better that the Physicians will still cruise and use safety measures. God will allow us to Cruise again when he sees fit. I am patiently awaiting his "Permission".

Since they are now saying coronavirus is primarily transferred through the air, and transmission though touching items is unlikely, the problem with the buffet isn't whether you serve yourself or they serve you and who touches the tongs. It's standing in line with other people waiting to be served. Now, it could be with reduced sailing capacity there will be few enough people on board that there won't be lines at the buffet. But if they only have half the people, I could see Carnival only opening up half the buffets. Which would mean the lines would be as long as they've always been. jetsfan58 Posted May 23, 2020 Author #63 Share Posted May 23, 2020 Someone may have mentioned this earlier. In the beginning and when they return, Carnival may look at half capacity for Crew and Passengers as a testing point. However I can't honestly visualize them sailing shortly after the trials without as close to full capacity as possible. Unfortunately, it's still a Revenue Generating Game !!! This is why this topic is critical/vital to the total Industry's comeback. One Outbreak and "Reputation" Doom settles in for the long haul. Let's just pray that the "Beards" as John Heald calls them get it right!

They are temporarily implementing a cafeteria-style, where they serve their customers on their buffet lines, or servers bring an endless buffet to your table. I typed that from their website. There were also people serving the ice cream. That’s all I could remember she said. The servers salt and pepper your food for you? I don't think I'd like that. Maybe I should think about bringing my own salt packets with me. Hmm

My guess would at the very least no self service and possible waiter service to the food areas to tables. It get complicated very quickly when you add Guys burgers and Blue Iguana. There may very well be an interim solution followed but a permanent one after all this fun subsides. What that will be? Who knows. Think there will still be a riot as they couldn't come fast enough or often enough with all the volume that they push thru the big eaters on the ship. I believe that the buffet “problem” is simply overcome by the staff behind the counter serving you. Oceania Cruises have always done this and their health issues (stomach bugs etc) are rarely a problem.

Joe, I had a cook who worked there, which is why I would never eat there. Mostly everything is heat and serve out of cans or bags. when a restaurant puts an ad in the paper saying hiring cooks, no experience necessary, that scares me. Although he did say they were clean. We are just not buffet people, we go out to eat to be served.
