I suspect you are incorrect in your assumption and that Royal will "modify" gratuities as well. It is not an all or nothing proposition. Sorry, but you are incorrect. Auto Gratuity on RCI is an “all or nothing” endeavor. This is not an “assumption” on my part as you stated in your post, but a fact.

I assume you meant that you were not allowed to modify grats - not sure you can extrapolate and declare that is true for the entire fleet for every customer. One must be real careful with absolutes, all it takes is one example to prove you wrong.

That has been my custom and I have always had amazing service. I know some people complain that that is bribing the cabin steward and you shouldn't do it but it has always worked for me. We don't tip early and we always receive good service. If we didn't get good service then no extra tip for them. I think most cabin stewards work hard to try to please people in hopes of getting something extra at the end. I abhor people who take away their autograts without a specific, excellent reason. On NCL, I once removed the exact amount because of a change in policy and was not going to pay double tips for a specialty meal. In 30 cruises that one time is the only time I have modified my autograts. Edited June 13, 2020 by Computer Nerd
FamilyCruiserUK Posted June 13, 2020 #317 Share Posted June 13, 2020 Any subject to do with money will always bring out arguments. The simple fact is, it is up to the individual to decide if they want to tip or not. The cruising industry is open to visitors from all over the world and different cultures, therefor these people have different beliefs in regards to tipping. For example in america it is custom to tip for things where as in Japan it is considered rude to tip. I know what i do and i am not going to share it on a forum, but i respect other peoples decisions

Ahhh sorry, just trying to follow your rules - stupid me, so people are idiots if they remove autograts on a RCI cruise but it's fine on NCL - fully understand your rules now. Glad your rules in no way show hypocrisy, apologies for my previous misunderstanding 😂
Mallefiscent Posted June 13, 2020 #319 Share Posted June 13, 2020 Well, I just read all 13 pages of this thread. (Yes, I am very bored.) I gotta say, I am very confused about tipping now. I think I will just go back to the very first post and do whatever it says, but since someone was arguing that you pay more if you are in a suite, I am not sure if I should. I really thought the gratuities on my invoice would pay for everything. All this tipping drama is gonna scare me away from cruising more than covid 19 or norovirus. The auto grats are higher if you are in a suite. You don't need to tip any extra unless you choose to. Don't let this stress you out.

I can't really think of much else. If you buy a drink 18% is automatically added. If you but a drink package 18% is automatically added to the price. If you eat in a specialty restaurant 18% is added to that. Pretty much anything you buy on the ship outside of the retail shops will have 18% added to it. No tipping is needed in the shops. So, pretty much, if you pay the auto grats you are covered.
