I Guess Alaska Cruises Will Be Cancelled Soon

Even if they got the ok today to open up Alaska cruising in July, I doubt it would happen.  It would be for a short season with limited capacity.  Royal would most likely need to bring their ships over from Asia without passengers and probably return the same way.

I don't think they will miss those dollars just as I don't think they'll open the border. You asked the  question what benefit would Canada derive. The answer is Port fees. You correct it is an insignificant amount to a the Federal Govt. spending money like a sailer on shore leave. To the Victoria harbor authority it might be more significant.

Very true, I should have qualified my question.

... what would be the material benefit to Canada...

Or ... if Canad's GDP were an elephant, what would be the benefit to Canada that is bigger than a pimple on the flea's behind on the elephants' back ...

Or ... what would be the benefit to Canada that is larger than the Canuck's chance to win the Stanley Cup this year...

I don't expect Canada to open the border to Americas anytime this year.  The current ruling party in government is and has been historically anti-American. It plays well to their base to be seen as being tough on the US.  Also, Canadian media has been in a near frenzy of anti-americanism for the last year and a half, really for the last four and half but it really ramped up with the Virus.  They could turn on a dime and alter their editorial coverage (they won't, because they are bought and paid for by the current govt.) but the general population has been so conditioned to fear Americans coming here that the prevailing view is to keep the Canada/US border closed.  Flights from the hotspot of India are no problem but an American walking though Butchart Gardens is sure to bring a tsunami of plague.  Or so is the prevailing thought.  That is why folks in BC who have plates on their vehicles from US jurisdictions put signs in their windows to advise that they are actually Canadians or transiting the country to Alaska.  The fear of vandalism was a very serious problem last year.

I don't like our present Government either but almost every statement of yours is pure opinion, not variable fact.

Geez, reading your post was almost as bad as reading a CBC news storey.

Comparing me to the CBC is cold and borders on being an offense to be banned over.  😂  However since I am strong proponent of free speech... no matter how wrong or ill-informed it might be....

Are you disputing that the majority of Canadians want the border to remain closed and that it is politically expedient to continue to do so for the PMO.

Your verifiable facts starts with Western Standard Media??

From one patriotic Conservative Canadian to another (And yes, Liberal Canadians and even NDP  and Green Canadians are patriotic too), let's just leave it at, your version of the facts and mine are quite different.

Sigh! I get it you hate Canada. See, I too can make sweeping generalizations.

The cbc is a mostly publically funded broadcaster.  Suggesting that it serves one particular political party is nuts. Did it serve the PCs when they formed the government?

Its true, most Canadians want to keep crossings between the US and Canada restricted to essential traffic only. The reason is that until quite recently infection rates in the US were more than ten times those in Canada. Nothing to do with like or hate. Simply self preservation.

Yes I am disputing the assertion that flights from India continue to land in Canada. https://www.canada.ca/en/transport-canada/news/2021/04/government-of-canada-suspends-flights-from-india-and-pakistan.html

The last item was obviously a hate crime. I'm sure it was investigated as such. To suggest that all of even more than a handful of Canadians feel that way demonstrates a lack on any sort of reasonable judgement.

Now, can we get back to discussing the possibility of Alaska cruising this year?

Most of these points are opinions and not facts.  As for the comment that you don't expect the border to Canada to be open to Americans anytime this year...once again, an opinion.  I would be glad to make a wager that statement is incorrect.  I do not expect the border to be open in the next couple of months, but am quite confident you will see it reopened before the end of this year. (That is not fact either, just my opinion).

Well said.  Most Canadians would love the border to be open so people from the two countries could travel back and forth for recreational purposes.  It has both economic benefits and expanded opportunities for recreational activities (like cruising - when they eventually restart from the US).  The problem is that the majority of Canadians would prefer to keep the border closed at this time while the infection rates in the US are still very high.  I am not saying that the US is not doing a great job vaccinating a good portion of its residents and I am not saying that things in Canada are going great now for infection rates, but the opening of the border at this time is not a prudent idea.  We want it open, just not yet.

What you said may have been true at one point, but as of a couple of days ago, is no longer true.  Canada has banned international flights from India now as well.

I assumed that you had ties with Alberta and were an Oilers or Flames fan since you quoted Western Standand, whose publisher (and the author of the article) is a former Alberta MLA.

Which NHL team do you cheer for?

Go Argos Go. (Just in case you are a EE or Stampeder's fan)

Born, raised and spent almost my entire life in Vancouver.  Sadly, I suspect that I will never see a Stanley Cup brought to my home town in my lifetime.

It would appear the tide has shifted. Democrats are now calling for a reopening of the border.  I'm sure Skippy will get notified that the winds of change have started to swirl so the CBC can be directed to change their messaging.

so, do you think there will be an Alaska season after all?

I think it will be highly unlikely.  With the CDC rules for cruising that have come out, with all the work the cruise lines will need to put I to get up and running, the very earliest we could see them going is early August.  That leaves just a one month season.  To move the ships to Seattle and Vancouver for just a one month season makes no sense. Also, even with an open land border Canada still has it's cruise ship ban and there will be very little pressure to open that up.

The cruise lines will focus their energy on getting up and running in the friendly jurisdictions of Florida and Texas.

I just thought it was interesting that a democrat was advocating opening up.  Particularly with Ontario's covid numbers still so catastrophically high.

I'm not surprized. Chuck is a politician first and then a Democrat, and we all know the first job of any elected politician is to get re-elected. Chuck's up for re-election next year. This is simply a "I feel your pain" play to the voters when he knows darn well that the decision, and any negative consequences, are not his. I'm sure if the Republican challenger had been selected already they would be parroting each other on this issue. 😉

As for why anyone would want to visit Ontario now is beyond me. I don't want to visit and I live here!
