Adawn47 Posted March 1, 2021 #428 Share Posted March 1, 2021 (edited) We love Malta. Our first visit was a due to a port diversion, we should have gone to Lybia😌. As it was sudden and we had no idea what we wanted to see, we took the HOHO to the south? and visited the Blue Grotto, Marsaxlokk with the colourful eyed boats, the magnificent churches and architecture, and stunning coastal scenery. The next time we went, we decided to take the HOHO around the other side and see Mdina and the historic part of Malta. Unfortunately, when we docked the heavens opened and we had torrential rain the entire day, so not to be☹️. Maybe soon🤞 Avril Edited March 1, 2021 by Adawn47
Grumpycruiser60plus Posted March 1, 2021 #429 Share Posted March 1, 2021 Valletta, Malta, Sept 19, Oceana, our last cruise (before Virus) We flew out a couple of days ahead of joining ship, so we could enjoy a return trip to Malta,( out last visit was 38 yrs previously) interesting to note all the changes in that time. We stayed at Grand Exc Harbour Hotel which P & O use. It was in an excellent location, a short walk into the old city. I have included a Restaurant pic/food which I can highly recommend should anyone get back there one day soon. Plus some evening shots of harbour/ fountain & sunset.
Aulanis Posted March 1, 2021 #430 Share Posted March 1, 2021 (edited) Another no picture day but it is lovely outside here so have just skimmed through the Malta Pics. We have been before Land based and went all over the island on the public bus. Even got to Gozo on the ferry but got on the wrong bus and had to get back to the ferry which didnt leave us enough time to see much. We did cruise to there on Oceana in 2017 but straight off and to the airport, so no pics. Still working on my project, on day 15 I wondered if you can have a cruise and not have a spreadsheet? I also tried to look back to find something I was sure I had seen and it took ages. So I have combined these two thoughts and have started a roll call spreadsheet. Not a lot on it but I have listed those posting and on the itinery tab I have listed the places with the post numbers. Then decided to link the place names to the first post of each place. ( as far as possible) Next up is a map this is the hardest part as I cant find a FREE program that will do it and googlemaps gives a route but across land only. There is a page for an M&G which is a bit redundant but perhaps those in the "Midlands" who were thinking of a meet up when covid allows could use it to keep a list of those interested. If anyone has other ideas I am happy to try and add things. Currently workinprogress but it can be viewed HERE Nothing to download, nothing to sign in to. SeaJane Posted March 1, 2021 #432 Share Posted March 1, 2021 We also love Valletta and have visited twice. It was a place I had always wanted to see as my Dad was in the Navy in WW2 and was on one of the destroyers that escorted the convoy that relieved the island from starvation in 1942. All those serving on the ships were awarded a special medal and in 1995 it was presented to him by the Maltese High Commissioner in London.

Rare Eddie99 Posted March 2, 2021 #435 Share Posted March 2, 2021 Naples - you don’t need do anything except grab a coffee at an outdoor table and watch the traffic! 😬 We went to Herculaneum and should have walked on Vesuvius but there had been so much rain the authorities weren’t letting anyone walk there. Herculaneum was Absolutely Fantastic, I would love to go again or, naturally, to Pompeii. I’ll have to return sometime, if only to have a proper pizza

Dermotsgirl Posted March 2, 2021 #440 Share Posted March 2, 2021 We went to Naples on our first cruise, and the photos are in the loft. We did a full day excursion to Sorrento and Pompeii. One of the main reasons we booked this cruise was so we could visit Pompeii, and I thought it was amazing to see the Roman streets, and also very moving and human to see the shapes of the people who had died. Unfortunately, Naples doesn’t appear very often on the P&O schedules any more. I would like to visit again as there’s a lot more I’d like to see, such as Herculaneum and Capri
Izzywiz Posted March 2, 2021 #441 Share Posted March 2, 2021 The Naples area is stunning and I need to go back because there is still so much to see! I would love to spend some time in Naples itself and also go to Herculaneum. Sadly, we don't cruise with P&O very often because, although we enjoy the ships and the ambiance, I find their itineraries are very limited and repetitive. Our first visit to Naples was in 2006 when we did an excursion to Capri, Sorento and Pompeii Capri Sorento Pompeii
Izzywiz Posted March 2, 2021 #442 Share Posted March 2, 2021 (edited) Our second visit was in 2019 when we did an excursion along the Amalfi coast to Amalfi....a stunning but scary ride! The bus ONLY hit 2 vehicles along the way which, apparently, was less than normal!!! Amalfi was gorgeous. We did a boat ride along the coast which gave us a different perspective and then spent an hour in the town. Ardennais Posted March 2, 2021 #444 Share Posted March 2, 2021 Visited Naples ten years ago with Princess. We spent an enjoyable few hours on a small holding above Sorrento watching Maria making cheese and then tasting the fruits of her labour with some limoncello. After lunch in Sorrento we headed to Pompeii. A lovely day!

How strange. Here are some photos of Herculanium which is much smaller and easier to get around than Pompeii and some of Capri.

The Maltese still think well of the Brits thanks to folks like your dad. We went into Malta in 2019 on an RCI cruise, but our first Visit was on our very first cruise. Island Escape in, I think 2001. No pictures as they didn't have cameras in the old days🤣
zap99 Posted March 2, 2021 #447 Share Posted March 2, 2021 In 2019 we stopped in Naples on an RCI cruise. We had been there a few times before, so decided to just get of the ship and wander around the City. Won't do that again.
Aulanis Posted March 2, 2021 #448 Share Posted March 2, 2021 (edited) This is Naples in 2013 it was a bit run down and quite dirty but ever so interesting. Bar Nilo is a shrine to the footballer Maradona and the signage on the station one of the most confusing I have ever come across. Rare DamianG Posted March 2, 2021 #449 Share Posted March 2, 2021 (edited) Naples part 1: A crazy DIY tour day where we walked to Termini Railway Station, got tickets for the Cercumvesuviana line and made our way to Herculaneum. After that we moved on to Pompeii, then had some time to spare before the train back so called in the cafe next to the train station just for drinks but were tempted into the most delicious pizza we have ever tasted: Edited March 2, 2021 by DamianG
Rare DamianG Posted March 2, 2021 #450 Share Posted March 2, 2021 (edited) Naples part 2: An overnight stay after we arrived late afternoon so we went out for pre-dinner drinks and watched a stunning display by hundreds of starlings. Next day we caught the ferry to Sorrento where I enjoyed a fabulous pasta meal made from bike tyre inner tubes (kidding - it really was lovely) before the day's excertions (and possibly a boatload of lunchtime wine) caught up with one member of our party who had a good snooze on the ferry back.
