Rare uktog Posted April 1, 2021 #1 Share Posted April 1, 2021 But I fear maybe not. The charm of an overnight was wandering the back canals around San Basilio. No need for St Marks, this was the home of real Venice Venice bans cruise ships from historic centre https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-56592109
Mackdogmolly Posted April 1, 2021 #2 Share Posted April 1, 2021 The article says “large ships”, but doesn’t define what that is. Does it mean that small ships can dock in city center? Aren’t Azamara ships small? I wish this was clearer!

The term "large" would logically not include an Azamara ship, but who knows the way the Italian authorities think? They've been dithering over this for years! I've written here before that I'm so over Venice. It's been spoiled and that in part has been due to the influx of cruise ship tourists. combine Posted April 1, 2021 #5 Share Posted April 1, 2021 Trying to find any tonnage figures from the latest announcement is not easy! Figures mooted about over the years mention over 96,000 and then 55,000 tonnage. I’d like to think that Azamara at approx. 30,000 stands a chance to dock at the very convenient small dock. When you compare them to the top ten largest cruise ships at all over 170,000 , there may be room for the little ones!! 🤞
CYNSport Posted April 1, 2021 #6 Share Posted April 1, 2021 Reuter’s is reporting 40,000 tons https://www.reuters.com/article/us-italy-venice-cruiseships/italy-approves-new-decree-to-keep-cruise-ships-out-of-venice-lagoon-idUSKBN2BO5DN.

I am hoping that reporting which Seatrade is also saying is correct as Azamara would still be OK

welwyngirl Posted April 3, 2021 #9 Share Posted April 3, 2021 I have been to Venice on cruises but, to be honest, I think the Venetian authorities should ban cruise ships. The impact on the city with large numbers of passengers is not sustainable nor is the damage done to the lagoon. There are other ways to visit Venice. I'm ducking!

I love Venice and have been lucky enough to have enjoyed land trips and cruise visits there. I agree that all cruise ships should be banned. I remember the first time I saw cruise ships pass by my hotel window. I was shocked. They just looked so colossal and really out of place and they were really “small” ones . laurieb Posted April 9, 2021 #11 Share Posted April 9, 2021 We've never cruised out or Venice; I for one am hoping we'll get to do that in October, on the Quest
combine Posted April 9, 2021 #12 Share Posted April 9, 2021 The ship on the right is one of many that I think gives cause for concern and rightly so. Azamara in comparison on the left could hopefully fall within the guidelines .🤞
