Port or Starboard on a Transpacific from Sydney to Honolulu

So, if you want sun on your deck, you have to know where the sun is in relationship to you.  If you are heading west from Honolulu to Australia in the fall the sun will be south of the equator, and you will be after you go to Tahiti, south of the equator... the sun will not be on the starboard side, but it may be overhead enough that the port side won’t get a lot of sun.  

 

So, since I haven’t done that trip, I can’t say for certain.  That said, the port side has a chance of sun the starboard zero chance of sun sailing from Tahiti to NZ or Australia.

Well, most of the day but mainly in the mornings. We love having breakfast on the balcony, so we would like to know which side of the ship will get more sunlight. We are looking at sailing in April 2023 from Sydney to Honolulu.

At that time of the year, the sun will rise about 10 degrees north of east.  This means that about the time you’re ready to eat breakfast the ship will likely be heading pretty much into the sun and a little later in the morning the sun will definitely be on the port side of the ship for the remainder of the day (this is for the Sydney to Tahiti leg).  From Tahiti to Hawaii, the sun will be on the starboard side until about noon, then on the port side for the remainder of the day.  You will be in tropical waters and crossing the equator.  Whether you want to sit in the sun then is up to you; it will be plenty warm and shady on the port side!!

I am purposely changing cabins of an aft wrap cabin of previous 3 legs, to a midship cabin for that "bounce" up to Honolulu.   Less movement on those long sea days.

The equator crossing will be likely very smooth.  IE it is much smoother Tahiti to Hawaii, than Vancouver to Hawaii.

On the Hawaii to Tahiti leg the sun will be on the port side in the morning and starboard in the afternoon.  For the run from Tahiti to Sydney the sun will be mostly on the starboard side.

Thanks so much! If I have to choose, I prefer afternoon sun so I'll choose a cabin on the starboard side 🙂

after having done both ways several times we find it doesn’t really matter,  enjoy your trip as we have always done 😁
