Talk about using App on board

So if the cruise lines are pushing to use their app on board now instead of paper, account access on tv, etc. - Where does this leave people who do not buy the wifi packages or have it given as a perk. Those of us from another country just put our phones on flight mode - where will that leave us to access dinning reservations etc.

Celebrity's app is all well and good if you have a wifi connections, what about those who also do not have phones at all?

Just some questions that have crossed my mind as I look forward to getting back cruising.

Their WiFi lets you use their app without having a package and a WiFi can be turned on when a phone is in airplane mode.

There will be alternatives for people who do not or don't want to use a device.

I am fairly certain that you could connect onboard to the Celebrity website without paying for WiFi either.

Yes, and some other "partner" sites, ao. a news website, but I don't remember which. Possibly a local US news website, definitely not CNN or another major news outlet.

Remember that there is a world of difference between "WiFi" and "Internet", even though many people conflate the two.

Internet connectivity is the connection between you and the mass of internet connected services and websites. On a cruiseship, this is accomplished through the satellite connection from the ship's servers to the outside world.  This is what you either pay for or receive as part of an included package.

WiFi is the designation for the transmission methodology for data from your device to the ship's routers and servers.  This does NOT give you outside access (which requires internet connectivity), but does connect you to the local servers which host the data used by onboard app.

It is 100% possible to have "WiFi" connectivity without having "Internet" connectivity.  It's also possible to have a perfect WiFi connection and have limited to no "internet".
