Have you ever requested a kettle for your room? Did you get one?

Please help keep this thread on track - it's about kettles. It's not about alternative cruise lines. I'm going on a Princess cruise. I want a kettle on my Princess cruise. Thanks!

Why not try taking a snare, tom toms or if it must be a kettle, the ones painters and decorators use are acceptable to Princess.

Regards John

A kettle is always a fire hazard.  What changes is the cruise line's desire to please their demographic (like UK cruisers), so will pay for the extra cost and maintenance cost.  They will also have an insurance premium rider added for those ships with "universal" kettles.  It is a risk management problem.  Does the benefit (happy UK cruisers) outweigh the additional cost and the additional risk.

Yeah sure. How much is this insurance premium?

Some kettles are fire hazards and some are not.

When a cruise line supplies a kettle, it knows the kettle is of a type that should not be a fire hazard.

If a passenger brings a kettle aboard it may be a safe one or it may not. That is why passengers are not allowed to bring their own kettles.

On Princess ships not based in Southampton, there are no kettles on board to put in passengers' cabins.

No one is talking about smuggling a kettle aboard or doing anything that breaks cruise line rules. This thread is about how to request and receive one of the safe kettles the cruise line has.

Is there any difference in 220V vs. 110 V kettles regarding the potential fire hazard. What is used on the ships? Do kettles have any effect on the floating ground system, like showing false readings?

Other comment.

For those that have no use for a kettle, like us, they would occupy some of the limited counter top space in the cabin. Seems if they are to be available it should be on request, not universal. Another MC addition?

I did an internet search for fires caused by Kettles with the auto shut-off and found 1 in New Zealand in 2018. There are millions of these kettles used every day in the UK alone without incident so the question of kettles being a fire hazard is a lot less than other items like hair straighteners which are allowed to be brought on ships.

And hair straighteners or flatirons don't all have an auto-shutoff which makes them even more dangerous.

Here is an idea.... bring a small metal pot or mug that will fit inside the two halves of a flat iron. Voila!

Well I hope you also taught your multi-generational children to read all responses to threads before presuming to know what they say.  Not only does response #46 specifically list 2 Princess cruises where kettles were offered, the OP has happily and with much light-hearted demeanor accepted the "no" responses when in response to the question he asked. Clarifying the question is not "not accepting No as an answer".

Maybe you grew up too soon... but it is never too late to lighten up a little.  This is a forum about cruise ships, not Navy ships.

The question was clear from the start, if the OP was accepting of  the clear answer as it pertains to ships sailing out of the US he would not have persisited for four pages.

The only "Navy" ships I have been on was to visit.

Nah... the four pages was mostly people having fun, from all nations with different levels of importance on their tea!

Which Navy ships have you visited? I have only been on one battleship, the USS Iowa currently in Long Beach.  Apologies to the OP for the minor tangent.

I'd really like a kettle to make coffee first thing in the morning. Yes, I know you can get a thermos of hot water via room service. Yes, I know they have coffee in food court upstairs. I want my own kettle to make my own coffee on my own balcony. #coffeesnob

So... how do I get one without being in a high dollar suite? I'd really like a kettle in my balcony room.

Have you asked your room steward for a kettle? Did you get one? Thoughts on how to get a kettle?
Please help keep this thread on track - it's about kettles. Thanks!

If your going to bring one, bring one with a detachable cord. Pack your cord in your companions luggage apart from the kettle itself.  Nobody will be the wiser. Then when enjoying your tea on the balcony you can giggle and reflect on just the rebel you are.  Have a great cruise!

You spoke too soon!  🙁

See the post above this.  And now this thread will devolve into how to circumvent the Princess kettle restrictions - and it won't be the first time on this board.

During my Coast Guard career I visited many Navy ships but especially enjoyed Canadian Navy vessels - booze in the wardroom.😇

It's not just Europe that has kettles...  We first experienced one in our hotel in China!  That said, there are no "Hobs" in cruise cabins so where is the fire hazard?

I think the REAL reason you won't see them often in mainstream cruise lines out of the USA is:  marketing.  The more time we spend out of our cabins, the more the cruise line can potentially add to their revenue.

Las Vegas is a perfect example of this kind of marketing strategy.  It's a science (of sorts).  The City has an ordinance banning coffee makers in hotel rooms for sanitation reasons.  Not true, they want you in the Casino getting your "free" coffee - potentially spending more money in the Casino.  Also, have you ever noticed that there are NO benches or other seating along the strip or around their outdoor entertainment features?  It's because they know people eventually need to sit down and will be forced to return to the Casino for that relief.

On a cruise ship, if you have to go out to get coffee, you may buy a fancy coffee or a cocktail for walk by a store and see something you want to purchase...   walk by the Future cruise desk and book a cruise... or the Excursion desk and book an excursion... or the Specialty dinning room and make a reservation...  You get the idea....  You probably can think of more things than I just did!  Ha!

This has also been given as the reason for no longer having enough seating inside anything smaller than a Deluxe Balcony category cabin.

Did not even think of this but I suspect you are spot on!  Money talks, doesn't it?  If I'm making coffee in my room then I am NOT buying a coffee at the specialty coffee bar where they've installed expensive espresso machines!  We need to get the customer out of the cabin!

LOL - Kettles are not a fire hazard.  They're a profit hazard!!!!!

I think I'll start a thread about how to get permission to bring a couple of my well-trained flying monkeys on the cruise.  I'll put a saddle bag on them and send them down to the coffee bar to get my morning coffee for me.  PROBLEM SOLVED!

You really need to sail NCL, we had an espresso machine in each of our rooms.
