What Happens if you Test Positive before Returning to the USA?

We have a transatlantic cruise Lisbon to Barbados in a few months. We are both vaccinated. We realize that we will need a negative antigen/PCR test prior to landing in Lisbon from the USA and boarding our ship. What happens if you test positive on your test prior to flying back to the USA after disembarking in Barbados? We know that this happens. This is one of the reasons we are hesitant to proceed with this cruise.

You’d need to comply with the Covid 19 protocols of the country you are in (e.g. quarantine, etc). Likely at your cost unless you have travel insurance to specifically cover quarantine.

Yes, the safe travels voyager policy from Trawick. You can purchase from Insubuy. When we flew to the BVI in March this was a requirement for entry. We had $3000 for 14 days of Q for two people covered under trip delay.

If you test positive you will be in Barbados until you are cleared to fly by a doctor OR you test negative.

 

Some resorts like Sandals are including insurance as part of the stay.  If you have few extra days, this might be worth while, and might give you the security that you will be taken care of.  

 

The other options are to self insure and just  book a place to stay if you test positive OR go home on private transportation AND/OR possibly buy medjet assist to get you back home if it gets serious.

Thank you for all suggestions. With the advent of the Delta variant making travel more worrisome, I think we will cancel our Nov. cruise and wait for things to get better. Hopefully, in the near future.

With regard to COVID coverage in trip insurance policies, many companies exclude coverage if you travel to a CDC Level 4 country.  Be sure to check carefully the fine print in the policy concerning the conditions of coverage. At present Level 4 countries include Tahiti, France, Greece, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain and many others to and from which Windstar sails.  The list, of course, is constantly subject to change, but if you are planning on sailing out of Lisbon be aware of the risk.

You should supplement any travel insurance policy with membership in MedJet Assist for evacuation coverage.  Even if you get Covid while traveling, they will still bring you home [if the country permits you to leave]:

I specifically asked Windstar yesterday what happens if someone tests positive during the cruise on the ship.  (we are booked for Tahiti for 10/17)  She said they immediately remove you from the ship and either take you to a hospital (for treatment) or a hotel (for quarantining).
