Hi Puggymom, I know you said you were in the first group off after those who walked off themselves, but do you have an idea what time your group was called.  Thanks for the response.

I think it was about 8:15. Meeting time was 8:00 in the casino.

If this will help with your guestimate : we were self debark group B. Our group was called at 7:50 and it was a pretty quick process. We took a taxi to the airport and easily made our 10:20 flight out of FLL.

This makes sense.  But you did not need to have a test for flying and to get home like Canadians still do.  PITA, but no options for now.  Still, if get off the ship early enough, should be able to make a flight before noon.

I saw the Emerald at Agua Clara Locks today and then found this thread, perhaps I can shed a little light on the bridge wing coming into contact with the light fixture.  As Heidi13 stated in the Panama Canal the pilot has navigational control which is unlike most other ports where the pilot assumes an advisory status even though the pilot maybe conning the ship.

Some background, ships transiting the Canal cannot have any protrusions beyond the hull with the exceptions of the anchors any lower than 55' above the water.  Protrusions above that level are permitted (within limits) and the higher up (such as a bridge wing) the distance permitted of the protrusion increases.  With all that said any protrusion the vessel will have to release the Canal from any liability and indemnify the Canal for any damages that the Canal could incur.  So in short those dings in the light fixture are all the responsibility of Princess if the Canal chooses to go that route.

I have no doubt that the ship was conned by a Canal pilot at the time the bridge wing may have contacted the the light.  I am aware the Canal pilot at times will give the conn back to the master in certain circumstances.  These circumstances are of limited duration and the Canal pilot is always first on the blame line when things go amiss regardless who had the conn.

Some of you may remember when the Carnival Fantasy struck the wall while descending at Gatun Locks in 2019.  IMO the pilots failed to position the ship properly in the chamber and the locks failed to ensure it was safe to lower the water and the ship hung up on the incline while the ship was being lowered causing considerable damage.  All in all the Canal caused the problem, however all the waivers were in place and the damage was on Carnival's tab.
