What ship? When you first board, go to the MDR for MTD and ask what time MTD opens up.

Harmony is currently using deck three for MTD.  There is such a demand for early assigned seating that they are using deck three for assigned seating starting a 5pm.  Once early seating starts to clear out they switch over to the MTD crowd.  Decks 4 and 5 are assigned seating. If you need to eat earlier you could try to switch over to early assigned seating. Deck 3 is also vaccinated only, I believe decks 4 and 5 are for everyone..

We just got off Adventure and had My Time dining. Supposedly the earliest we could be seated was 6:45 but went as early as 6:15 and were seated immediately. I suspect we could have come even earlier.
I’d recommend going to the deck 3 dining room as soon as you get on the ship and ask when the earliest you can be seated.

Maybe I can help you with this. We always use the RCCL app or web site to make our reservations for MTD. What you see, 7:15, might be the earliest they have left for a reservation. They allow a certain number of reservations for each time block, so as not to have half the ship trying to eat at the same time. We like to eat at about 6:30 but several times the earliest that may come up is 7:00. We do make that reservation but, as MTD is just what it says it is, you can go down to eat whenever you want. With the reservation, if there is a line, you will not have to stand on it, you have a reservation for a certain time.

Say you reserve a 7:15 for day 3 and you feel like eating at 6:30. Either call the dining room or stop in and cancel your time and show up whenever you want. You might have to wait a short time if there are no tables available. Sharing a table will get you in quicker if there is any line.

Cheers

Len

Same with us on Jewel. And at the "appointed" time there was a huge line. Just wait until the early dinner folks have all been seated. I think that's the main thing.

@Giantfan13I have always had a set time for dinner on cruises before.

This will be our first time with My Time Dining.

You mentioned that with reservations you will not need to stand in the line. If you don't mind me asking, where do you go if you do indeed have a reservation. Is there a separate place to check in? Thanks!

The beauty of MTD is that you can eat when you feel like it.  We rarely make reservations, only if necessary to make a show.

On a Harmony cruise this month, we had early dining on deck 3, along with many other guests.  From our seats it appeared that most of the tables on deck 3 were assigned to early dining (certainly too full for social distancing). There were about 4400 passengers on our sailing.  Per the cruise compass, MTD started at 6:30; Perhaps some were seated at available tables before 6:30, as some early diners elect to eat in other venues any given night.  When we exited from our early dining, there were lines at MTD desks (both reservation and no reservation).  Lines were especially long 1st night and both “dress your best”/formal nights.

If you wish to eat before 6:30-7:00, consider switching to early dining.

I have cruised six times since restart. The MTD is not truly MTD and it’s a hassle. I hated making appointments and they were always late. They frowned upon us showing up outside of our dining time. I have changed all of my future reservations to early dining until they return to the flexibility of true MTD.

At the entry, there’s a sign. Normally, those with reservations go to the entry station on the right and those without reservations on the left.

On Harmony there are separate podiums for those with reservations and those without.  There were always lines at both podiums when we exited from early dining. On less busy nights, the reservation line was short and the no reservation line was moderate.  Both formal nights and night 1, there were long lines at both podiums.

Your experience will vary depending on ship, how full your specific sailing, and time.  Still, do not assume you will not encounter a line just because you have a reservation.

As has been said, there is a sign that basically says those with a reservation this side and with none, the other. We always ask to share a table and on mostly all our cruises we never had to wait more than 5 minutes (with a reservation). I guess it depends on the ship and when you want to go to eat. We like to eat about 6:30, and rarely have any lines, no matter which ship we are on.

First time cruiser (we have cancelled this trip twice already)... So there are set times for early and late dining and the option for whenever you want for MTD?  Reservations required for early and late but suggested for MTD?  All take place in the same dining rooms?

Noticed that on Adventure. We came early and we’re walked right in. Looked at the entry at 6:45 which was supposed to be the earliest time and there was a line backed up a long way.

Yes. There are no reservations for early or late, you have a set time every night. Yes, though usually in separate sections of the MDR.

On all ships, early and late traditional dining each have set times and each diner has a specific table assignment.  No need to make reservations for traditional dining, as the time is pre-set.  Also, once one knows the location of their table, there is no need to wait for a hostess to escort guest to the table.  So people quickly file into their early or late dining seats after the first night.

MTD, on the other hand, has been handled differently at different times and on different ships.  So, you should search for recent info for your specific ship if you have questions about MTD.  Reservations are not required for MTD, but having a reservation should reduce your waiting time (perhaps greatly at busy time on busy night).  Theoretically, people with MTD can eat anytime during MTD hours (started at 6:30 on Harmony this month)…The OP is on Harmony.  On that ship, the dining room on deck 3 is used early dining and MTD thereafter.  As early diners finish (or if they do not use their dining assignment that night), MTD diners are seated at the vacated tables.

  • 1 month later...

I'm sorry, I'm going to have to ask this because for some reason I don't understand....

First of all, we were assigned "open my time" dining when we booked (in March 2021).

What we want is the same time every day for dinner in the MDR.

On the app, it shows Main Dining Room Deck 4, Main Dining Room Deck 5 and My Time Dining Room Deck 4.  (This is on the Jewel for March 25 2022.)

Only MDR Deck 4 and My Time Dining Deck 4 are available for making reservations, but the reservation button is grayed out.  (Is this because it's too early to book?)

How do we select the same time for dinner every day?   (I understand we can go to the dining room upon embarkation and ask but can we make the reservations on the app ahead of time?)
