Like most of you, I was not awake to see the New Year in. I think things were very quiet here. My neighbor who felt it was necessary to blow up the condos in celebration moved out a couple years ago for which we are all grateful. The latest forecast snow missed us. Probably just as well. The past several snowfalls have been pretty high moisture content. There was ice when I went out with Mr. Bandit this morning and we did not walk far. And the pace was very slow. We still may get some flurries. But it will be getting very cold. And in the fire area, those houses that survived will probably have to deal with broken pipes. Mama Nature needs to ease up a bit. My New Year's meal is BBQ ribs, black-eye peas, corn bread and collard greens. Then I really do need to make a trip to the store. Take care all. I just checked my weather app on my phone, and here is how it looks. We have rain or drizzle forecast today (and it could be drizzling outside right now), my DD has pouring down rain, my DS has fog currently with snow coming shortly. And our family in the St. Louis area have rain as well. Everybody I know is waiting for a break in this weather pattern!😒 . Oh, and edited to add, why do crowns fall out on a holiday weekend? Because apparently we need to be inconvenienced for the longest time possible. DH was just trying to log into the bank account and the new password he instituted last week did not work. Or he could have forgotten to capitalize a letter. We call that operator error! Now the bank account is locked down, and the automated phone system was no help at all. Looks like he'll have to wait until Monday to call them and get back online. Forget about checking first of the year financials! We are expecting a high of 62f/17c. Tomorrow’s high will be 66f/19c. I expect this is to lull us into a false sense of security and that 4 feet of snow is in our future. I do not have a lucky new year meal but if there is football then my husband will be happy with the charcuterie board I didn’t make yesterday. With wedge salad, steak and shrimp, and mushrooms and baked potatoes, there was no room for charcuterie or champagne at all. We made it till midnight but it was as unexciting as I thought it would be. Family in England and Canada reported fireworks early on, but ours didn’t go off until midnight and there were no wild parties that I could hear. Happily, there are no hangovers today either. I recently got my first crown and, because I was traveling, the dentist told me to pick up a little container of dental care cement at the drug store. Our friends still don't have water so were here for a shower yesterday and may come and do laundry this weekend. We're supposed to warm up on Sunday and see temps in the low 40's by Monday - yay! DIdn't stay up until midnight but I rarely do. DH's finger took a turn for the better yesterday and looks much more like a finger should. The infusions are working! Yesterday was putting away the Christmas dust collectors and I'll take down the tree today. For some reason DH (and his stroke-addled brain) feels I need to tell him the history of each ornament on the tree. Not happening but I will satisfy his curiousity and do several of them. At least the sun is shining even if we have a north wind. We managed to stay up until midnight. No hangover today. We had a glass of sparkling wine with dinner and another to usher in 2022. There were a few fireworks 🎆 in the desert, but most were around 9 pm. In this neighborhood most are in bed by 9pm if not before. We'll be having left over ham with our traditional blackeyed peas and coleslaw. It's an easy meal since today will be busy since I'm taking down the Christmas 🎄 tree and other decorations. Two things went wrong with New Years Eve, make that three. I made coffee (one should not drink coffee at night) to stay up and watch a football game that wasn't on. You would think that with Georgia playing, some local channel might have bartered a deal with ESPN, but no. So now I am wired with coffee, and nothing to force myself to stay awake. DH suggests putting the movie that i bought (one of my favorites) on, so we watched Under Fire. Yes, it's an old film, based on the removal of the tyrant of Nicaragua in the 70's., a bit romanticized, but close enough to the truth, but the character Alex, was in real life, a friend of my fathers. And the music is fantastic. I listen to the score a lot. And for years I have asked Santa for this film, and lo and behold I found 3 copies at Dollar Tree. I bought two, explained the movie to the guy in line in front of me, and he bought the third. So, it's 11 p.m., and i am wide awake. DH wanted to be somewhere this morning at 7:30, so we tried going to sleep. At 11:45 the fireworks, and gunfire began in our "hood" and lasted until 1:15, full blown show! People cheering and clapping, but it was a street over, couldn't watch it through the trees, so I kept thinking I would fall asleep. Nope, up at 2, 3, 4 and 5. I fell asleep around 5, and the alarm went off at 6:30. I am looking into my crystal ball and seeing a nap in my future.. It is way too warm and humid, and while the sun was out an hour ago, it is long gone now. Rain today, and bad storms tonight, So my walk in the woods is on hold for now. My parents were weird. If there was ever a tradition(beside tuna casserole on Friday nights) my mother would refuse to honor it. She warned me once, that what you do on New Years Day you will do all year. So far it looks like a year of laundry, feeding the cats and cooking. Oh wait, that's normal....maybe I should vacuum today, and dust...lets not push it. My dad's tradition was fondue on Christmas Eve, but he got too curious on options, so instead of gruyere he decided to do a Mexican cheese dip and loaded it with jalapenos, and that was the end of the tradition. He and I loved it, but it didn't sit well with the other family members. New Years Day? I cant think of one traditional meal, maybe pork roast? Mom was born in Cleveland, so maybe, but i couldn't t swear to the pork roast. DH and I should start a new tradition, but with no kids between us, who would carry on the tradition? Once on shore we walked to the translation and purchased a combo ticked for the train ride including the Hop On bus in Glasgow for the day at a special rate . So without further ado and too many descriptions , you all partied too much last evening I assume , I will just post a few nice pictures . University of Glasgow Art Gallery A Scottish Independence Rally No business in the Old Bank might as well turn it into a very nice Bar , business was booming ! Took the train back to Greenock and returned to the Elegant Explorer after a very nice day . No hangover here, I just had my usual (large) glass of wine 😉 I don't think the PNW has a traditional New Years meal, at least not that I could find with Google. We'll be having a steak dinner tonight and I do have kind of a tradition of having prawns w/cocktail sauce, Lumpia, fruit and cheese for lunch. Probably a strange combination, but it works for us! 🙂 Today I'll start taking down all the Christmas decorations -- and that will take at least a week to do it all. VERY excited that our son and DDIL will arrive in WA state today! Last night they made it to Eugene, OR, so only 4 1/2 hours from their WA destination. Cannot wait to see them. We were in Greenock in 2014 on the Eurodam. We went to Inveraray Castle and had a nice day. A Glasgow cutie and me. Bagpiper, of course Exterior of Inveraray Castle. The interior was prettier The Duke himself was working in the gift shop (note it says "Duke" on his apron). I don't use the term "hood" loosely. But it is a very eclectic bunch of folks, very few Americans, and while most of our neighbors dont speak English, we all seem to get along. I looked at my photo books and have verified that I haven't actually had a stop in Glasgow yet. On the first stop in 2011 on Emerald Princess, we and our friends took a tour of Edinburgh from Greenock. It was about a 90 minute drive. Here is what low tide looks like in Greenock, taken from the bus. But on the way to Edinburgh we drove through Glasgow. Here is the Glasgow airport as seen through the bus windows, plus crossing the River Clyde. On our 2015 Royal Princess stop in Greenock we took a morning walk, where I saw one church after another! So many! That afternoon another couple (who are friends from prior cruises) and I took a tour of Loch Lomond and the village of Luss. It rained and rained that afternoon and I think I posted a photo of my friend Sandy and I standing with umbrellas next to a friendly duck who of course liked all that rain.🦆 On our way to Loch Lomond our bus took a ferry due to time constraints. There's our bus We never did see the Loch Ness monster in that loch. Here we are in Luss. On our bus ride we stopped at a scenic lookout called Rest and Be Thankful. Due to the rain we had to dash off the bus and snap a few photos from under our umbrellas. It would be beautiful on a sunny day. On our 2017 Prinsendam visit, it was again a showery day so we took a short walk to the local mall and back. There's a nice coffee shop there. I don't drink coffee so this would be DH's. On our 2019 Prinsendam visit we walked through town past the mall to the park on top of the highest hill, Well Park. I posted photos of that too. This was taken on the way to the mall. Inside the mall. We've found if we walk to the back entrance we end up in a nice area of town just below that big hill I mentioned earlier. Walking out the back door you see this courtyard area and the tall church steeple. A statue in the courtyard. And here is the church we saw with a lovely gazebo in front of it. That's when we noticed the tall hill nearby and went in search of stairs to go up to the park there. Name of the church. Imagine our surprise when we found this huge flat area at the top of the hill. From here we saw the church steeple, another tall tower, and off in the distance on the left side, is that our Prinsendam? At the bottom of the cloud. Check out this view! The well the park is named after. It says 1629! And a nice large statue to decorate the park. I wouldn't mind coming back to Well Park again, if I didn't want to try out a trip to Glasgow next time. Sipped DH's margaritas (!!) with UGA-Michigan game in the background, home before 8pm. Granddaughters' Christmas cookies for dessert! No hangovers this morning, and rather than a day long lounge in a favorite muumuu, I am ready to re-start daily walks that have taken a back seat to Holiday busyness. No hangover here; I had one glass of champagne, after struggling to stay awake until midnight. People were shooting off loud fireworks until about 1AM. Good quote. I will have a lucky southern meal today (maybe better luck than my usual NY day meal) - black eyed peas, ham, corn bread and greens. I also need to make PA Dutch pork and sauerkraut since I defrosted the pork loin. Pass on the drink. The wine sounds good; I'll have to see if our State Stores carry it (our wine/liquor stores are state run). I have not been to Scotland. Thanks for the pictures @sailingdutchy @Cruising-along @StLouisCruisers I still have a sore throat and a headache off and on. I managed to find a spot for a PCR test tomorrow, although I'll have to drive a bit. Everywhere close didn't have openings. I've been very careful, so I'd be surprised if it's positive. Fortunately no pain from the lost dental crown. @kazu Continuing to pray for Jose, his medical team and you. @StLouisCruisers That is surprising DGS tested positive again, although supposedly the test can remain positive for weeks to months (although the person is not infectious). How long ago was his prior infection? @aliaschief Good to hear your son's family is doing well. @dfish A well deserved day off! We appreciate all you do. Oh no, on the crown popping off! @luvteaching Yikes on that amount of snow. And your neighbors still being without water; so nice of you to help them out. We had chili (my dad's favorite recipe, basically browned ground beef/onions, V-8, chili powder and other spices to taste, kidney beans, and a bit of corn meal as a thickener) for dinner last night while binge watching "Cowboy BeBop" (the anime version). We cracked a bottle of Costco's finest Prosecco later and made sure to save a glass for midnight! Today, I will be making our traditional New Year's Day dinner of Hoppin' John (rice and black-eyed peas cooked up with some type of smoked pork). I used smoked ham shanks this year but you could use ham, ham hocks, pork jowl, bacon.... I am not sure why we started making this since we really don't have any southern roots. But it is so good, we decided to keep making it. Growing up in Pittsburgh, I remember pork roast and sauerkraut as a New Year's Day tradition. As a kid, I loved the pork but wasn't a fan of the kraut. But I love it now!
