How rough is rough????

I'm taking a cruise to Bermuda from Boston. I've heard that this trip can be a rough crossing.

My question is how rough is rough? Is it hard to walk on the ship? Is it really scary? Is a more like a gentle rock or a huge sway. I'm just trying to get a feel as to what it's like.

Thanks.

If you manage to chose a cruise when a hurricane is hitting the North Atlantic, you could feel it pretty significantly. If you're sailing from Boston to Bermuda, I'm assuming you're taking the Norweigian Magesty, and it's not that big or new a ship, so it doesn't have the latest technology to dampen the effect of the waves.

My first cruise was NYC to Bermuda, we didn't cruise again for many years, partially because of the older ships that sail that route (they need to be smaller to get into the port), partially because it was so rocky. When we sailed again on a bigger ship in the Caribbean, after Hurricane season, the difference was night and day

My 1st cruise was really rough. Walking up or down the stairs was a challenge, since you'd lift your foot and the ship would drop and your foot had nowhere to go! Interesting!! We found that if we kept drinking and stayed tipsy, we could just pretend it was the alcohol and not the ocean!

Thankfully, we don't have motion problems, and we were never scared, but I must say, I prefer calmer waters!

Have also done the Majesty to Bermuda from Boston. It's the Atlantic, it will always be rockier out there than the Caribbean, plus the Majesty is one of NCL's oldest and smallest ships. Waterville, just want to say that if you are affected by motion sickness, bring Bonine and ginger capsules just in case. I was never scared by the rocking, just a little green at times. That being said, the staff of the Majesty were terrific, Bermuda is gorgeous, and Boston was a convenient port to sale out of, not crowded like other ports and the parking garage right across the street. I wish they'd put a newer ship up here. Enjoy your trip. Happy sails...........

We have cruised 26 times. The two roughest cruises were from Boston to Bermuda on what was then Royal Majesty, a smaller ship, and the second from Bermuda to New York on Song of America. This cruise

originated in San Juan and sailed to New York via Bermuda. We find chairs on Prominade deck and lay in the fresh air. We found trying to navigate the ship in those conditions is difficult. Many passengers took blankets from the cabin and spent most of the night on deck. We were never scared and just rode it out. The Atlantic is rough most of the time but seeing Bermuda is worth a little bouncing.

We did Baltimore to Bermuda in August of 04'. We had the effects of hurricane Irene, I think it was that one and it was pretty rough for the sea day. I didn't mind it very much, but I was taking Bonine the whole time.

It was a little tricky at times walking but no big deal. The worse part was in the dining room..my back was to the window and each time the ship rocked it felt like I was going to tip over, but even that wasn't a big deal.

I wasn't scared at all and it was my first cruise! I'm sure you will be having so much fun you won't let it bother you.

Rough is rough. The ship bounces and you have dificulty walking, you have to get your sea legs and it takes a while...but it's kinda like horse back ridding if you pay attention you just flow with it. It is NOT scary!

I love what you said!!! That is how DH and I talk about "riding out" the rough waves! We don't fight the motion and just roll with it just as we would while riding our horses. You will find that some people b*tch and pitch a fit if they feel the ship move like it's such a huge inconvenience. LOL it's a friggin ship LOL you are in the middle of the ocean!!!!!

Of course if the waves get to be a bit much a stiff drink and the casino will take your mind off it!

I did a 10 day Caribbean and Bermuda cruise on Jewel of the Seas in September, we passed right by hurricane Ophelia on the way down........not scary, fun! Our pool became a wave pool you could actually body surf down the stairs :)

It was not hard to walk really, and I did not find that it was really even any rougher than some of what I have felt farther south, no big deal really....

Sometimes it depends on when you are cruising. The summer months are better than the early spring or fall. I went on the Majesty in October of 2004, and we hit 30 ft waves. It was very, very, rough. But it calms down when you get near Bermuda. It was like glass coming home. You can never tell. I went on her again in July of 2005, and never felt her moving. The trip was wonderful BOTH times. I hope you enjoy her!

On the October cruise, FYI, I did go to bed early the first night out because I did feel a little seasick. I always take Bonine, but 30 ft waves are pretty rough. I was fine the rest of the trip (again - with my Bonine)lol!:D

Thanks everyone for your input so far. I'm sailing June 11th. We were going to sail the second week in Sept. but I was afraid of hurricane season - not the hurricane itself but maybe rough water due to all the activity. Is it hard to sleep when you have rough weather - especially 30 ft. waves?

If the cabin is set up right, I like to sleep laying from port to starboard rather than from stem to stern. (Across the ship rather than lengthwise.) That way, if the ship is really rocking, I don't rock from side to side with it when I sleep on my side. I've been in some pretty rough waters, but never had trouble sleeping.

IMO I think this date sounds great. It shouldn't be too rough, maybe a little rocky just out of Boston, but then it should be fine. The weather should be beautiful in Bermuda. Enjoy your trip!:)

  • 2 weeks later...

Talk about rough water! We were on the water on the Carnival Sensation during Christmas 2004 and were not allowed outside at all! They locked every door to an outside location and stongly advised passengers not to use their balconies! No one said what was happening and I just thought this was normal being my first cruise. What an initiation into cruising! It has taken me this long to even consider crusing again after that experience. Chances are you'll not have waters like that!

If the captian feels it is too rough for passengers to be on deck, the decks are closed. Never had then all closed but when drawers in our cabin were opening and closing by themseves, it was rough. I love it, ALWAYS FEEL SAFE!
