Cruise one way

Recommended Posts

Because of PVSA limitations there are probably no options for one way sailings from mainland US to Hawaii;  but you could consider something like the Majestic Princess’s Pacific crossing sailing from Vancouver, BC Sept. 20 and stopping at Oahu on Sept. 29 .  You most likely would have to pay full fare for the crossing and arrange for early debarkation with the cruise line.

You need to look for a 'repositioning cruise', usually found just before, and just after the Alaska cruise season.  The ships are usually returning to, or sailing back to Australia.  Many of these cruises will end in Vancouver, BC and the sailing time is about 12 days total.

That could be a very expensive alternative.

I am looking for a one way from USA to Hawaii or reverse..  I want to spend time on a land tour before or after land tour. Any ideas....

NCL has a ship that only does Hawaii. Fly to Hawaii, do the cruise, then land and fly back.

There are a couple of options for this, in particular with Celebrity and RCCL, as we have done them.  They are repositioning itineraries typically originating in Australia and terminating in Vancouver.  They transit both ways with Hawaii as a port of call (typically 2-3 islands in the chain) on a seasonal basis: Vancouver, BC to Australia in the fall, and Australia to Vancouver, BC in the spring.   The limitation being that they are only offered these two times of the year and are not a regularly scheduled itinerary as they are a repositioning cruise.

In our case we flew to Hawaii and spent a few days there prior to boarding, and then cruised the remaining 11-night leg of the transpacific back to Vancouver, with two stops in Hawaii and a stop at Vancouver Island prior to disembarking in Vancouver.  From there we flew home.

There were passengers on board for the full itinerary from Australia as well as a large number boarding as we did in Hawaii.

Not as much as you might think.  In our case as it was a repositioning cruise, the net fare was very attractive (most repo's are) and similar - or less than - to what a more typical 7-night closed loop itinerary would be expected to be.  At the time the airfare from the east coast to Hawaii and returning from Vancouver was also reasonable.  The stay in Hawaii was the more expensive portion of the trip but that would be somewhat expected and separate from the cruise anyway.

We have a similar trip planned for Italy in 2023, with a 15-night repositioning cruise back from Rome to Port Everglades with several European and Bermuda stops en route.  The pricing for the cruise is very attractive.

I agree that transoceanic cruises are usually a very good deal. We love them and have done the SYD-LAX - one of our favorites.

FWIW: perhaps OP should consider Polynesia as an alternative. We’re doing SYD-PPT in early 2023 and could’ve done a continuing (second) PPT-LAX several weeks later had we wanted to spend the interim layover island hopping.

The Hawaiian Islands comprise a set of exquisite locations in every respect (though we liken Honolulu to L.A. and generally avoid it). The trip from the US East Coast is long but worth the time, effort and cost - particularly when past “island life” has been limited to the Caribbean. However, Polynesia has its own allure along with similarly rich culture, history and natural beauty. And airfare to Polynesia can be affordable (check United fares PPT-SFO, even just one way).

I took the repositioning from Rome a few years ago....    Great trip just note the docks are far from the city of Rome. Get room center of ship.
