It has been raining and is currently 17°C.

Tomorrow will be Pauline's late dad Roys 14th memory.

Roy was one of the nicest people I have ever met.

I love milk chocolate and sold milk chocolate for 35+ years.

It will be interesting to see Tina's photos of today's food.

My reading is predominantly Cruise Critic and hopefully my writing is liked.

Sending our very best wishes to everyone who is suffering today.

Portland is not a popular port although Pauline booked us a short MSC cruise next year which visits Portland and Cherbourg.

Thank you for the Thursday report, Rich.  I prefer dark chocolate, and haven't been to a waterpark in years but Buffalo Soldiers have a great place in our history.  Been to Portland just once, 2015, on the Elegant Explorer.  I like the Steven King quote.  I think I'll pass on the meal.  My alternative is Chilled Blueberry Soup and Roasted Duck with Sour Cherry Chutney as served on the Elegant Explorer July 28, 2011.

Believe or not, we have never been to a water park though have been on a few water rides at various amusement parks. Those from Chicago will probably remember the great Chute the Chutes water ride at Riverview Amusement Park.

I liked chocolate milk in my grammar school years.

Good Morning Dailyites!  Happy Thursday!  I'm feeling better today, just sore.  Taking DH to the oncologist this morning.  Then working the rest of the day.  I am going to make some country style ribs, and coleslaw for dinner.  May do crock pot on the ribs, just to keep the heat down....

 

I dont like the King quote.  I used to be a big fan until the Stand, and then my taste in literature changed.  I like dark chocolate , but I love chocolate milk.

Nice collection of days.  A waterpark would fit in well with the heat.  I like the quote today and the meal would be good sans chick peas.  Looking forward to hearing about the wine (it’s white 😉).  We’ve been to Portland once and, like Roy on the EE.  Did a lovely private tour and enjoyed the day and area very much.

 

Busy day yesterday trying to get Shadow to eat and drink (I succeeded).  She is one nervous nilly.

 

 

Has to be picked up to be taken out and brought in right now.  That will hopefully change with time.

 

 

She was petrified going in the kennel last night.  I think she thought she was going on another plane ride.  She finally plopped exhausted in the front hall.

 

 

So I decided to put my “dog ears” on for movement put some towels down on the floor “in case” and stayed with her downstairs.

 

She’s very sweet - and it’s going to take time (and patience) and hopefully I can help her.  Thanks for all the wonderful well wishes and welcomes yesterday.

Good morning friends!  A sunny morning for us here.  Another great Daily so thank you Rich @richwmnfor doing this each day.  Whenever chocolate comes up I think of Graham @grapau27.  Milk chocolate is good but I do like dark chocolate a little more.  I can't even remember going to a waterpark but it's possible we did when the children were young.  A salute to Buffalo Soldiers who were an important part of our military history.  Interesting reading quote from Stephen King.  I may have to pass on the menu suggestion today.  Portland, England was listed here on April 11, 2022 so not that long ago but on that date it was listed as Portland (Weymouth), England UK so if you had photos of either you could post them then.  I have some photos from our stop in Portland which I will repeat.  

 

Thank you Roy @rafinmdfor the lists today.  We sure did hear of a lot of falls yesterday so that is a warning to us all to be very careful and watch our steps.  I know when I go down the stairs in the morning in the dark to use the treadmill I am holding on to that railing and making sure I'm off the steps and onto the floor so I don't take anymore tumbles there.  Prayers for all our people in need on the Care list. I'm happy to hear Ann @marshhawkis feeling better today.  A big hurray for the Celebration list! Good to hear Jacqui @kazu  got Shadow to eat and drink, and figured out ways to make her more comfortable sleeping and going in and out.  I can't blame Shadow for being apprehensive, but I know Jacqui will do everything possible to make her happy.

 

Here are my photos from Portland in 2018 on Prinsendam.

 

We stopped at Portland, England on the Prinsendam's "Irish, Scottish and European River Cruise" on Sept. 13, 2018.  What a lovely cruise that was!  The skies were clear as we headed off the ship and boarded a bus provided for us to get over to Weymouth.  We were dropped off a couple blocks from the small harbor.  We passed this nice little restaurant/bar while we walked.

 

First sight of the harbor which was very scenic.  We were told this harbor was used in filming the movie "Dunkirk" which I've never seen. 

 

 

 

 

Behind you when looking at the harbor is this lovely downtown area.  Ah, I see a fish and chips restaurant right there.

 

We noticed a bridge to walk (or drive) across to get to the opposite shore so headed there.  Here's a photo I took of a sign showing it raising, not knowing I'd see it raising later as we left.

We headed down this main street, and went in a grocery store to pick up something.  Toothpaste?  We had been cruising a month and a half already on two cruise lines so I was getting low.

 

 

 

At the end of the main street was the beach!

 

 

 

Looks like saddles on these donkeys.  People ride them?  Perhaps only children.  Good to see the man taking care of their hooves.

This area at the harbor was my favorite part of town.  You can see the clouds were rolling in.

 

 

All of a sudden I could see the drawbridge raising back where we had recently crossed.

We walked back to the bus pick up point for our ride back to Portland and the Prinsendam.  Scenery as we neared the ship, photos taken through the bus windows of course so not the best.

When time to leave we were treated to a band and some cannon fire.

The list I received in advance for today said, “one skillet roasted butternut squash with spiced c”.  Spiced what?  I found three possible recipes.

 

First, some tips about how to peel a butternut squash.

• Microwave the butternut squash for 1 minute (this makes peeling a bit easier).
• Cut bottom and top end from squash.
• Hold onto one end of the squash peel squash with one hand, then use a sharp vegetable peeler in the other hand to peel entire squash.
• Slice squash from top to bottom through the center.
• Using a spoon scoop seeds and stringy fibrous flesh from center of squash. Discard or reserve seeds for another use.
• Cut squash into chunks, about 1-inch each.

 

This recipe uses chickpeas and curry.  The author suggests that you stop struggling to peel and slice super firm squash, instead just roast it whole, tear up the flesh, then sear it off in a skillet.  I would add that you should peel it before tearing up the flesh.

Jacqui, just love Shadow! I agree with just putting "Dog Ears" on. When we adopted our first rescue Malamute , Oke', I purchased a large kennel for him. In less than a week he was roaming free in the house without any problem. Same with Juno, our second Malamute rescue. Probably just two nights in the kennel and no problem. I had since gave the kennel away so when we adopted Sam I thought I may need to get another one. First night - and ever since - he just sleeps next to our bed or somewhere in our bedroom. Occasionally he will be on his bed or the tile floor in the bathroom when it gets hot outside.

Good morning and thanks for the update. It’s a sunny and humid day here but thunderstorms are expected later.

Yesterday, took our female cat Fluff to the vet. She’s developed a lump on her belly and the vet thinks it’s cancerous. She did blood work and is waiting for the results. Also, said her lungs were a little raspy but X-ray was inconclusive., possible asthma but no treatment needed as she is not in pain. She believes surgery will take care of the cancer. It’s always something.

Now I want some Hershey kisses to celebrate the day.

The heat wave was supposed to break here but it’s still going to be 90 degrees today.

Good morning. It will be back to hot and humid here but it was nice to have a day off.We have been to the port and very much enjoyed it.It was on a British Isles cruise with my DB and SIL.As we noted last year, Sandi and I were on the European Rivers cruise at the same time in 2018 but did not cross paths unfortunately. That was our last cruise.

We have a Farmers Market type store here that routinely  has cut up and peeled butternut  squash.I like all of the recipes and  will try the second one soon.Thanks, Tina @0106!

Tana's  son now has Covid.We tested everyone else and so far are negative. He says he is feeling "a little  lousy" and is very worried  about Mom getting it again.This is his second time.

Shadow looks a beautiful dog.

When you said she is frightened it is so sad to think she may have been abused by previous owners.

I'm sure she will get to love and trust you.

My late mam and dad took 2 dogs from a dog rescue.

The first developed parvovirus and had to be put down.

The other cowered when you went to stroke it.

Paulines friend owns a cat rescue and an animal charity shop.

Good morning and thanks for the update. It’s a sunny and humid day here but thunderstorms are expected later.

Yesterday, took our female cat Fluff to the vet. She’s developed a lump on her belly and the vet thinks it’s cancerous. She did blood work and is waiting for the results. Also, said her lungs were a little raspy but X-ray was inconclusive., possible asthma but no treatment needed as she is not in pain. She believes surgery will take care of the cancer. It’s always something.

Now I want some Hershey kisses to celebrate the day.
