helene109 Posted September 15, 2022 #1 Share Posted September 15, 2022 We almost always have Portside. Looking at a Celebration cruise for August and not many left. These are the ports. Thanks again!
Schoifmom Posted September 15, 2022 #2 Share Posted September 15, 2022 "Port" side doesn't mean that you will necessarily be facing the port, if that is what you are thinking. It is really just the left side of the ship (when facing forward). Whether you face the port or not depends on how the pilot orients the ship when docking. 1
bguppies Posted September 15, 2022 #3 Share Posted September 15, 2022 Also depends on what you want to see while in port. The city you are docked at or the ocean off the other side.
May1cruiser Posted September 15, 2022 #4 Share Posted September 15, 2022 When sailing south, port side gets sunrise. Starboard gets sunset. When sailing north, opposite, port side sunset. yadda yadda The ships tend to alternate which side they moor alongside pier, this is intentional and changes almost each cruise.
havanadaydreaming Posted September 15, 2022 #5 Share Posted September 15, 2022 i like to have sunset outside my balcony as many nights as possible when on a cruise.....but, i certainly dont plan it out. we usually are getting ready for dinner roundabouts of sunset and it gives me something to gawk at while the mrs is finishing up.
ShakyBeef Posted September 15, 2022 #6 Share Posted September 15, 2022 Starboard for me, but for a wacky reason: I like odd numbers and dislike even numbers.🤪🤣 (Starboard cabins are odd numbered; port even numbered). 1

Looking at a Celebration cruise for August and not many left. These are the ports. Thanks again! We just recently had the same question when booking our October 3rd cruise. We had to look at where we were going to be on Day 2 to figure out which way the boat was going to be facing on days 2 3 and 4, and then chose which side of the boat we wanted to be on based on which way we're going to be facing on what days. We opted for the sun to rise in our window on the first two days, and set in our window on the last 2 days. I was taught that the same number of letters are in port, as they are in left. Also starboard has an odd number of letters, and Port has an even number of letters. So that helps you figure out which side you're on Edited September 15, 2022 by Dwright826
Drazil65 Posted September 15, 2022 #10 Share Posted September 15, 2022 We are partial to booking port side, just our thing for some reason and after so many years it just feels right to choose that side. 2

jsglow Posted September 15, 2022 #12 Share Posted September 15, 2022 It's funny. I think through history we've probably been Port 2/3 of the time. No particular reason. Our next 3 are all Port. Interesting.
coffeeboy77 Posted September 15, 2022 #13 Share Posted September 15, 2022 Starboard side is generally the smoking side for the outdoor areas. Not a huge deal, but if you have a balcony above or below one of these areas you may notice the smoke, particularly while in port. I prefer the port side.

We always check to see where smoking is allowed on each ship we sail on, and take the other side. 1
ShakyBeef Posted September 15, 2022 #15 Share Posted September 15, 2022 I've never found cigarette smoke from the Lido deck smoking areas to be an issue on any of my Starboard balconies, (maybe because I have always been below Deck 9?). It's the neighbours breaking the no-smoking-on-the-balcony rule that have been an issue for me several times.😡 And that can happen on both sides of the ship.

There's no guarantee a ship will dock in a certain direction, it can change due to weather, or just the preference of different captains. As far as facing the sunset..... unless it's a one-way cruise you'll have pretty much an equal opportunity to see sunsets on either side of the ship, just on different days.
Theosprey247 Posted September 16, 2022 #17 Share Posted September 16, 2022 Get an interior so it won’t matter (unless you’re partial to certain numbers).
cruisingguy007 Posted September 16, 2022 #18 Share Posted September 16, 2022 I prefer starboard but have no problem with port side. It seems to work out better for us on our particular preferred cruises.
