habita Posted November 21, 2022 #1 Share Posted November 21, 2022 We have been to Honolulu many times. DH has dementia and doesn’t want to go on tours or buses. Can you suggest where to go within walking distance from the per ?
jagoffee Posted November 21, 2022 #2 Share Posted November 21, 2022 You can certainly walk to shopping and walk around the port area. Not wanting to ride a bus does limit you.
Rare HaveDogWillTravel Posted November 21, 2022 #3 Share Posted November 21, 2022 I just returned from a cruise to Hawaii and loved our stop in Honolulu. We walked to the Iolani Palace. It was amazing. It’s about a 15 minute easy walk thru safe areas. Of course there’s also Lyft and Uber if you need them.
Yehootu Posted November 21, 2022 #4 Share Posted November 21, 2022 You can walk into downtown and go to Walmart. China Town is a little shaddy, with homeless and drug deals. Iolani Palace and the Hawaiian Mission houses are a decent walk. Uber or Lyft to Ala Moana. You can walk around the center, or around the park across the street. You most likely be at Pier 2, turn left and walk down to Aloha Tower. Lunch on the dockside.

jagoffee Posted November 21, 2022 #6 Share Posted November 21, 2022 I did not realize that Palace was only a 15 minute walk. It is certainly nice and worth a walk.

I do not know when you are arriving, but check out the Royal Hawaiian Band concert calendar. https://www.rhb-music.com Also check out Ala Moana Center Stage for free shows. https://www.alamoanacenter.com/en/events/daily-hula-show-40430.html If you are planning to visit inside Iolani Palace, you can purchase tickets. https://www.iolanipalace.org/events/royal-hawaiian-band-concerts/ As a senior, you can ride the bus for a reduced fare (price increase). Exact change and masks required. http://www.thebus.org/Fare/SeniorFareNew.asp City Hall might have their Christmas decorations up soon. Across the street from the Palace. You should check their website. You most likely will require a reservation/ticket to tour the palace. Inside tours require discipline to remain with the small guided tour group. I remember that we had to wear supplied medical style slippers over our shoes. There are some other precautions that are in place to protect the palace.
jagoffee Posted November 22, 2022 #9 Share Posted November 22, 2022 I was initially just answering the OP’s question. I will not be in Honolulu, but great information for those that will be.

I just went this month and yes those little booties are required. We did the self guided audio tour so no need to stay with the group you are admitted with. The timed tickets are a use it or lose it if you prepay but they will give you a later entry time if they have it. Lots of folks were just walking up and getting same day timed tickets. We missed our 9 am time and were given a 10:45 time slot.
KeepCalmBearOn Posted November 24, 2022 #11 Share Posted November 24, 2022 Chinatown is fine. I walked from the Aloha Tower to Mei Sum Dim Sum, got some food to go and caught a cab back. The Fort Street Mall is walled off street with a few shops and dining venues,

But if you do go: Mei Sum for dim sum http://www.meisumdimsum.com Little Village Noodle House http://littlevillagehawaii.com Lee's Bakery makes the very best custard pie (whole), but you need to order one ahead of time.
