Here is what I have for Cunard's "Attire Suggestions" for the Red and Gold theme. Full disclosure, this is a few years old from when it used to be called the Royal Cunard Ball. Also, please keep in mind participating in the themes is entirely optional. rgaudet Posted April 1, 2023 #57 Share Posted April 1, 2023 Been 9 years since I’ve been on cunard but considering a crossing this year. I find the wording on their website ambiguous as to formal wear. “…a Gala Evening, where we do ask that you observe a black-tie dress code. Again, it’s your choice whether to participate in these evenings …” They ask but it’s my choice? so can I dine in brittania restaurant without a tux? Will suit suffice? Would I be kicked out with a sports coat and no tie? Rob

Would I be kicked out with a sports coat and no tie? Rob Just to add to the confusion, the wording on the UK website was updated recently to read slightly differently (emphasis mine). "At least twice on each seven-night voyage we’ll host a Gala Evening, where we do ask that you observe an elevated dress code. Again, it’s your choice whether to participate in these evenings or not. Many of our guests choose to sail with us specifically because they look forward to these events." My take on the "it's your choice" wording is there are designated casual venues for those who choose not to dress according to the Gala Evening dress code. "Feel free to dress casually as you visit any of the following venues: Kings Court, Lido Buffet, Golden Lion, Casino, Carinthia Lounge, Winter Garden, Garden Lounge, Yacht Club, and G32." It may also help to quote the more specific Gala Evening dress code as it is published in the daily programmes once on board the ship. "Gala Evening. Dinner jacket, tuxedo, or dark suit with regular tie or bow tie for gentlemen. Evening or cocktail dress, smart trouser suit, or formal separates for ladies." As you can see from this definition, a dark suit with tie is a perfectly acceptable alternative to a tuxedo on gala evenings. A sports coat without a tie would not conform to the Gala Evening dress code. You probably wouldn't be turned away since we've had reports that enforcement of the dress code has become lax. But I would like to encourage you to conform to the stated Gala Evening dress code. Edited April 1, 2023 by bluemarble

While I tend to not want to overpack, dressing for the events becomes a challenge, however that said, I encourage cruisers to enjoy the experience of being a part of the event by wearing evening clothing. Many people who dress in more formal attire are the ballroom dancers, they book Cunard to enjoy the dance floor, talented musicians, camaraderie. It really is a fun experience to see fans and feathers, mask, tuxedos and ties on smiling faces. Ladies can join in by simply wearing a decorative headband, faux pearls with their outfit, men a black or white long sleeved shirt under a jacket, clip on tie. As mentioned above, there are other dining areas other than in the MDR. Afterwards most people meet n mingle regardless of dress. Well, not jeans and tee shirts, but smart casual.

DaveB42 Posted April 24, 2023 #61 Share Posted April 24, 2023 Tonight on QM2, 4/24/23, it's a gala night, the theme is Black and White. Sadly the location is still Southampton, and there will be approximately 700-800 passengers aboard.

Well, we had late seating dinner, did the 10:15 show, then the 11pm session of the B&W ball. One couple actually dancing, one sort of dancing (us) and a 3rd couple just listening. The Queen’s Room was a ghost ball, in fact the haunted mansion at Disney has more dancing.
Rare Nemanoxer Posted May 3, 2023 #65 Share Posted May 3, 2023 (edited) I will do a 2 nights QM2 cabin filler cruise. Bullseye - second night is called "Gala night - optional"... My first time on Cunard. Are there any areas on QM2 on such a night where I can stick with smart casual wear and get some food? Or would all the ship hate me...? SireDoime Posted May 28, 2023 #68 Share Posted May 28, 2023 Hello, I am on the Q321 Queen Elizabeth sailing (June 20 - 30); there is a Gala Night on the first sea day themed for Icey Blue. I only have a black tuxedo and don't really want to buy a white and/or blue one. Searching for pictures of ideas was not productive. Can I have some suggestions as to how I can participate without buying a new tuxedo? Thanks! 🤗

bluemarble Posted June 22, 2023 Author #72 Share Posted June 22, 2023 This may be a good time for an update on the 2023 voyages where I still need the dress code and theme schedules. We're almost there! I'm down to needing only the schedules for these two December voyages. That's just one each for QE and QV. If anyone could provide the schedules for either of these voyages, that would be very much appreciated. (besides black and white of course) thanks Firstly a Gala Evening simply requires a dinner suit or lounge suit including a suitable shirt and tie, and shoes. You could wear a white dinner jacket to any of them. I'm not sure how authentic it would be if you wanted to follow a Roaring 20s theme, or whether participants at a Venetian Ball would have worn one. Personally I think black has a more formal look to it, although I did see a couple of guys wearing very smart slate grey dinner suits. I tend to wear my cream dinner jacket on nights that are not officially gala nights. We usually dress beyond the minimum advised code on non gala nights.
