Deck Names, not Numbers. Why?

OP: thanks for asking the question.  As a Princess newbie I was stumped at the missing deck numbers.  I guess now I (sort of) know.

That said, it seems odd and probably does them no favors should there ever be land-based first responders who need to be directed to a specific room.

If there ever was a need to have land-based first responders on board, they would be escorted by security who know where each room is. It is entirely illogical that first responders would be left to roam about an unfamiliar ship trying to find the patient!

Since there is a diagram displaying both deck names and numbers at every elevator location I fail to see the problem. I also check the deck plans on the Princess site before every cruise to "refresh" myself even if I have sailed on the ship previously. It's simply part of pre-cruise prep and anyone who isn't familiar with Princess ships (or any line's ships) should always check the deck plans in advance so they are familiar with the layout of the ship.

It used to be on the grand class ships that the decks below Lido were alphabetical, other than Plaza (deck 5) and Promenade (deck 7).  It went Lido, Aloha, Baja, Caribe, Dolphin, Emerald, Promenade, Fiesta, Plaza, Gala.  But when the bigger grand class ships were added, they put "Riviera" above Aloha.  Then the Royal class ships added "Marina" above Riviera.  So to your point, if you arent a frequent princess cruiser, yeah there doesn't seem to be much logic to the naming.  I guess as long as you know where your cabin is, and that public areas are on Plaza, Fiesta, Promenade, Lido, Sun, Sky, Star decks that should help?

As others have mentioned, the newest "Sun" princess doesn't have deck names....yet!

When I sailed on Royal Princess in 2016, after muster, I used the central mid-ship staircase, which was crew only, except for after muster.  The crew deck directory in the stairwell had Deck 3 named 'Holiday', which continues the alphabetical order.  I believe this staircase was fitted out and is now open to guests after negative guest feedback.

Is the same diagram at the stairs? Don’t use the lift. First Princess cruise next month and dreading getting lost on such a large ship

Lifts and stairs normally share the same lobby, so diagrams will be available.

What patient?  Totally disagree.  In some unknown catastrophe, with who knows how many responders trying to help some unknown number of persons, having illogical naming, not numbering, for decks would hamper wayfinding around the ship.  Pure and simple.

So, exactly how often do those "unknown catastrophes" actually happen?

And surely the responders would be ship personnel, who would have no trouble finding their way to wherever the "catastrophe" might be.

That doesn't go just for pilots. The phonetic alphabet was taught in the US military for years. My father was in the Army as a radio operator in WWII and it was even taught back then 😊 and I was taught it in basic training back in the 70's and I'm pretty sure it's still taught today.

Also often encountered in everyday phone conversations to avoid confusing an alpha/numeric string. Like when giving your TA the reservation number.

While this is true, I hear some people replace other things like David for D instead of Delta, and Robert for R instead of Romeo. But the results are the same 😊

I think I'm often guilty of that.  I can't remember so just make something up like Onion, Mary, Violin, etc.

Reading this thread has been fun! On our last three cruises on NCL, we've booked a state room on deck 13 as that's my lucky number - born on the 13th, met my hubby on the 13th, my son was born on Friday the 13th, etc...We're planning on booking a trans-Pacific cruise on Princess from L.A. to Hawaii this fall (our first time on Princess) and I'm looking forward to having a stateroom on the Aloha deck so that we can hear "Aloha" every time the elevator reaches our deck (as inspired by @travelin.sisterscurrent live on this cruise).

13 is our number too! We met on a Friday the 13th, got married on the 13th, and we live in number 13. 🐈‍⬛

We don't use lifts either.  Rest assured, so long as you know your floor number you'll be fine.  We had no idea that floor names were a thing the whole time.  The floor name thing is just a curiosity.

They would also give them a deck NUMBER, not a name.

So, when a member of staff asks you your cabin number, and you are in, say, cabin 123 on Aloha, how many  say A123 and how many say Aloha 123 ?

I must admit I have never considered using the name of my deck, I have always just used the initial letter. Perhaps I am in a minority.

I usually say the name because in a noisy room, B, C, D, E and G sound too much alike.

After the replies on  this thread, on our April cruise I will actually use our deck name - Aloha.

I just always assumed people used the initial letter,  but now I see the benefit of using the actual deck name.

Shows that every day is a school day !

Serious question- why/when are you giving your cabin number? Shouldn’t your medallion be used as this would avoid mistakes? I thought this was one of the main reasons for its introduction.

When? Almost every time I order a drink (except for at Outriggers Bar where they all learned my number by the end of day 1).

I expected the medallion to work as you suggested, but it was clear that wasn't the case.  Aside from the cute "automatic door unlock" thing, I found the medallion to be no better than a normal key card.

I was in S110 on my last cruise. When asked for my cabin number (for the multiple instances when the medallion did not work) it took every synapse in my poor brain to state “Sun 110” rather than “Sierra 110” that was right on the tip of my tongue.
