Rare drron29 Posted May 17, 2023 Author #1030 Share Posted May 17, 2023 (edited) Sunday and one of the ports I was looking forward to. Well we did see it. However the swell was borderline but there were strong winds and the forecast was that they were going to get stronger as a storm was coming from the south. Tender conditions were dangerous so Hvar was cancelled and we continued south close to the Croatian coast to miss the worst of the storm. The moon handled it well but there was a bit of motion as the swell got to 3+ metres. Edited May 17, 2023 by drron29
Rare drron29 Posted May 17, 2023 Author #1031 Share Posted May 17, 2023 So off we went on another sea day. Not enjoyable as heavy rain and strong winds. My step count took a hit. Lunch at Atlantide as Rojaan found out her favourite waiter/ boyfriend Therarith is their at lunch time. Forgot the menu but this was my lunch of seafood chowder, seafood basket and cheesecake. The chowder was very good.
Rare drron29 Posted May 17, 2023 Author #1032 Share Posted May 17, 2023 Dinner was at La Terraza. The full menu as this was likely our last meal here. After the antipasti Rojaan had the Carpaccio and I the lasagne. For mains we both had the Ossobuco which was very good but no photo. I also had the tomato "sauce" which as always was excellent. For dessert Rojaan had gelati and I a plate of Gorganzola. I love Italian Gorganzola. Near us was the Chilean phantom cigar smoker. Most think he is a little unusual. 1

Rare drron29 Posted May 17, 2023 Author #1035 Share Posted May 17, 2023 We were under the flight path into Corfu airport. Across the sea is mainland Greece. As well as Azamara there were frequent ferries. This one the Ada Theodora was doing at least 3 trips a day into Corfu. It steamed at full speed into port, did a sharp 90 degree turn then a 180 degree turn and backed in. And an unusual rock/ tiny island just outside the port.

Rare drron29 Posted May 18, 2023 Author #1038 Share Posted May 18, 2023 (edited) A change for lunch as Rojaan has found out that her favourite waiter/boyfriend is in Atlantide Therarith for the lunch service. He used to be there for the evening meal but is now in La Terraza. Rojaan has a new white wine from Portugal. I had the quesadillas, gazpacho and Sweet potato pattys with spicy coconut sauce. All very enjoyable. Whilst Rojaan had the avocado stuffed with shrimp and the cinnamon bananas. She enjoyed both of those dishes. Rare drron29 Posted May 18, 2023 Author #1039 Share Posted May 18, 2023 For dinner in Atlantide our favourite waiter is Herme, another that we have cruised with before. So after lunch I got the shuttle bus into the old town. Right in front of the shuttle bus was this ferry. And a couple of minutes later passed this hotel. A bit of laughter later that night in Atlantide. The shuttle drops you near the Old Fort which was where the first fortified city was in between the 2 forts there.

Rare drron29 Posted May 18, 2023 Author #1041 Share Posted May 18, 2023 Palaces of St. George and St. Michael. Then something that made mr think. In September 1943 the Italians basically ended their involvement in WW2. The Germans sent a force to Corfu and the other Ionian islands. Some Italian wanted to fight the Germans but it was obviously going to be ineffective so the Italians surrended. In Corfu the Italian officers were executed by the Germans. In other places the executions were more intence and 2 -3000 Italian POWs were executed. Another 3000 died when the ships taking them to concentration camps were sunk. After Nuremburg the German officer in charge spent 12 months in prison. Continuing my walk.

lincslady Posted May 19, 2023 #1050 Share Posted May 19, 2023 We always enjoyed a visit to Corfu town; lots of interesting buildings and a fascinating history. Just to walk around on your own was enough, no need for an excursion really. Your photos bring it all back nicely, drron. Lola
