Carnival's 110% Lowest Price Guarantee - What am I not Getting?

I booked a cruise on the Carnival website this past Sunday, May 7 for July 17, 2023. Monday morning the Carnival website had the same booking for $30 less pp. (same date, ship, category, cabin type) I filled out the Lowest Price form and very quickly got an email that it was denied. The denial explained that I had booked under Early Saver and could apply for a guarantee under that, but I booked only 71 days out from cruising so I did not think I would be eligible for Early Saver. I did fill out the ES form any way but have not gotten a response. I also replied to the original email and asked for clarification and basically they told me I wasn't eligible because "the 110% Lowest Price Guarantee is only eligible for individual reservations that are booked after final payment date". I don't understand this. How can you book a cabin after final payment date? Doesn't that become a different reservation? Also, the Carnival website doesn't say anything about booking after final payment date. It states: (copy and pasted)

YOU’RE GETTING THE LOWEST PRICE POSSIBLE… 110% GUARANTEED!

If you find a better Carnival-advertised deal within two days of booking your cruise… well, we’re going to be very surprised. And then we’ll give you 110% of the difference in onboard credit! You can be confident that our prices are the lowest, so you can get on to more important things... like counting down the days until you sail!

Just remember this:

  • You have 48 hours from the time you book to find a lower price.
  • Carnival will give you 110% of the difference in onboard credit.
  • Lowest Price Guarantee only applies to publicly available rates.

I did email again last night with my questions but have not gotten a response from them. Any help in understanding this would be appreciated.

Question - what is the final payment date for your cruise?  You say you booked 71 days out.  At that point, you would be inside the final payment date for any cruise.  People book inside the final payment date period all of the time, you are just required to pay in full at the time of booking.

Are you sure that you are comparing apples to apples with the cruise fare?  Are there promotions that have an effect on the amounts?  Did you complete the form within the 48 hour window?

There are just so many variables that it's difficult for us to help you understand why it was denied.

I booked and paid for the entire thing on May 7.I saw the new fare, which was a VIFP fare listed under My Offers, on May 8 and immediately filled out the form. The cabin that showed as available at that time (and is still available at that rate) was the one next door to mine, same category etc. Maybe I don't understand what final payment date is.

ETA: I just looked up Carnival's Final Payment date and a chart shows that for 4-5 day cruises, which mine is 5 days, the final payment date is 75 days prior. If i booked 71 days out, shouldn't I be eligible?

Login and check the price for the general population. If you book on a discount, the fare match is for the same discount. There are so many things that have to be done to get them to match, it is not worth it at the end of the day for what, $66? I know the principle behind it, but the headaches aren't worth it.

It doesn't matter if it's $3, if it's a legitimate request they should approve it or abolish the policy.

If you have certain rate codes which guarantee you can price adjust up until sailing.  Early Saver is this, if you find (at anytime after you book right up to - I think 3 days - before sailing) that the rate has gone down you can fill out the ES form and submit it and they will honor that price.  If you haven't paid in full the will reduce the amount you owe.  If you have paid in full, it comes back as OBC.

If you had a PVP they can usually just do the adjustment for you and you don't have to go through filling out the form.

I have always wondered why there is nowhere to find the rate code you booked under after you book. Now I'm wonder if the reason is to make it hard to take advantage of price guarantees.😁

There is a difference between the lowest price guarantee form and the ES form. Sounds like you submitted the wrong one.

I actually filled out both. I did the lowest price one first, when I saw the lower price. In the email where that was denied, they told me I had booked under ES and gave me the link to that firm which I also filled out. Haven’t gotten a response from that one.

There are very specific rules for it and it is spelled out in the contract. Getting the lower fare has to be with the same VIFP offer that it was booked under. Since it is not the same offer code, it was not granted. What could be tried is cancel and rebook under the new offer code. This is a where a TA comes in handy. Booking through Carnival or a PVP is more difficult in this situation.

Why would you say that a PVP is more difficult? We use a PVP, and she is able to adjust our fare to the lower amount while we are still on the phone with her. It literally couldn't be easier.

If you file the price match guarantee EVERYTHING has to be exactly the same to get the 110% guarantee.  If it is not exactly the same in EVERY aspect then there is no price match.  Only works apples to apples.

If you see a lower price and have ES, then it doesn't have to be the same rate code  -  it can be any rate code that you are eligible for and they will price adjust to that.  So if you booked under ES and then say saw a past guest rate that is lower and you are eligible they will price mach.

That is the difference.

So do you know for a fact that not everything wasn't the same? The Op states they were. Same ship, same date, same category, same cabin type as the rules stipulate. That is everything that is required according to Carnival.

No, and I did not imply I did, I was just making a suggestion as to why Carnival may have rejected it.

I also can see where it doesn't say same specifically this in the rules; however, I would be willing to bet it could be a reason it was denied.  Because the booking was under one rate and the new lower rate was under another and since it was not apples to apples they denied it, that would be why Carnival told them they had to fill out the ES form.

Also, there are a bunch of loop holes as to why Carnival could deny the 110% guarantee.  One's that we as consumers would never know.  It says things like not on certain sailings, limited capacities, etc.  All those vague terms that give them a way out.

Ok the way you capitalized ”everything” made it seem like you were stating it as fact.

it also doesn’t put Carnival in a good light to have a policy with unwritten rules that the consumer doesn’t know about. Doesn’t put the consumer on a level playing field.

Carnival also has a rule for early saver 5 day bookings. It says early saver is only available until 76 days before sailing. OP booked at the 71 day mark and after applying for the credit was told you booked ES. Again Carnival not going by written rules.

ES is stated as only available until 76 days before sailing, Carnival must have decided to extend this offer past this mark, which they have the right to do.

When booking I would hope the OP would have been cognizance of what rate they were booking under by asking if they did it by phone, or it is clearly listed what rate you are choosing if you purchase it yourself online.  Knowing the rate you are booked under is critical to understanding all the rules that apply to that fare.

Since the rules say the 110% guarantee doesn't apply to all ships/sailings/rates, it could be the case that ES doesn't allow for this, and you have to apply for the ES rate reduction through the form.  That would make sense too.

I can promise you that there are few to no "unwritten rules" at Carnival.

They may be in the fine print, or you may interpret them differently than they intended, but the rules are almost certain to exist. Like every other company its size, Carnival has an entire battalion of attorneys whose job it is to write and review these "rules".

Price matching isn't a "shorts in the dining room" type of thing. Unwritten rules aren't really kosher here. They either have to stand by their policies, or you can force them to by filing a complaint with the FTC.

Totally agree. I've used the same PVP for 19 years.  He always handles this type of thing very quickly. Even if we are not eligible " by the letter of the law", he usually talks to a supervisor and gets us the lower price.
