Celebration and Hair Styling Tools

I've searched and can't seem to find a concrete answer....

For those that have been on the Celebration... What hair styling tools worked and did not work? Trying to see if I need to purchase a new product to bring with us this July.

Thank you in advance!

I haven't been on Celebration yet, but my hair dryer did NOT work on Mardi Gras so I'm assuming it won't work on Celebration either. It's worked on every other Carnival ship we've been on.

My straightener DID work:

I have been on both Mardi Gras and Celebration.  Both my hairdryer and flat iron are from Lange.  They are both dual voltage (50/60HZ) and they both worked just fine.

I think this is the key.   My dual voltage stuff all worked.  My single voltage conair ceramic curling iron did not.

Newbie cruiser here - I'm sailing on the Magic in January and am now wondering if my styling tools will work. Do you know why they didn't work?

@wrightkj I've never had a problem with any of my stuff on the Magic (or any other Carnival ship except Mardi Gras.) I agree that tools that aren't dual voltage is the issue on the Excel class ships (I assume it's going to be all of them.)

I have been on Celebration twice and the hair dryers they have are good.  I bought my flat iron from Amazon which worked with no issues. It's by Wavy talk.

What Lange hair dryer model do you have?

Would my Dyson hair dryer work on Celebration?

Or are you suggesting I get a voltage converter, just to be safe?

You probably will still have issues even using a voltage converter.  Most cruise ships' power is 'different' from normal power, not just different voltage, or even the amount of power, but the way the power is delivered.  On a standard 120V AC circuit you have 120 volts (to ground) on one leg, zero volts (to ground) on the other leg and the third wire is an earth ground.  On a ship you have 60 volts on each leg (120 volts between the two legs) and a "floating" ground.  Converting the 220 volt AC outlets to 120 volts will only change the voltage but will not it to "normal" 120V with a true ground like you have at home and that the ceramic heating elements need to operate normally.

I'm reviving this old thread with new information.  I'm on the Celebration now.  My L'ange oval drying brush works but only in one of the three outlets I have.  My curling wand thing will turn on but not heat up and my Revlon flat iron that I've used on 5 or 6 other Carnival ships will come on, start to heat up then turn itself off.  Not good at all.  Dual voltage doesn't seem to be the indication that it will work becaue my dual voltage hair curler does not heat up.  😞

I have a Revlon Blow Dryer Brush and would be devastated if it doesn't work - on the Celebration last year my curling iron would not work - I ended up buying a cheap one in San Juan but my tool of choice now is the Blow Dryer Brush.  If the Lange worked in one of 3 outlets, maybe I should get one of those.

Would be nice to see more results from anyone who had success or failure and which tools they used.

Seems crazy this is such a problem on the new ships - before the Celebration, I never had an issue.

Ok, new information - I spoke to a representative at Carnival Cruise.  Apparently any device that has that ALCI plug (they refer to it as a surge protector) will not work on ships in the Celebration class (he claims all ships but I know this to not be true as my hair dryer has this and it worked on the Magic).  Perhaps some of you will say you were able to use devices with this type of plug, however, the representative at Carnival read to me the specifications which claim it absolutely will not work.

So if you have a hair dryer blowout brush that has this (and apparently by law it must include this), it won't work - looking on Amazon, there is the odd one that seems to be available that does not have this feature so I think I will get one if I can for travelling.

It really is too bad as eventually all devices might be equipped with this sort of plug at least any powerful ones.

If any one here has a different experience, please let me know.

I bought a lange curling iron for cruises, it has worked for me on all classes of ships. The curling iron that wouldn’t work for me on any of them was my ceramic curling iron.

Hi again - did it work on the Celebration or Mardi Gras?  And did it have that ALCI plug - that is what they are saying is why they won't work on the newer ships due to their wiring systems.

If yours did work on those ships, and if it has that plug - then that information they gave me is not valid.

I just looked up what an ALCI plug is.  My Lange Hairdryer does have this plug but my Lange Flat Iron does not.  I have used both of these with no issues on the Mardi Gras, Celebration and Jubilee.  Not sure if this helps at all....

My curling iron does not have that plug. The one that didn’t work didn’t have it either. So I have no idea what makes the Lange one work but my ceramic one not work ha ha

LynnTH - is your Lange Hairdryer the brush type or just a hair dryer?  Just curious - Sounds like it's simply hit or miss on these things.

It is just a regular hairdryer - not the brush kind.

I have the Revlon brush and have used it successfully on Sunrise, Horizon, Pride, Valor, Miracle, Radiance, Dream, Conquest, Panorama, and Venezia.
