jlazz Posted August 2, 2023 #1 Share Posted August 2, 2023 I am looking to book a cabin on deck 1 Aft, and want to find out if the engine is in that area.

Haven't sailed on the ship, but it isn't too challenging to figure out. Pax cabins must be above the uppermost continuous deck, which is above the waterline. Engines, the ship will have multiple medium speed diesels, probably 4 of them. Due to stability requirements, these are placed within the ship as low as possible, usually on the tanktop, or just above the double bottoms. Since the ship is probably diesel/electric, she does not require shafting from the engine to the tailshaft, so the engines can be installed further fwd. Therefore, no the ships engines will not be in the vicinity of Dk 1 Aft cabins. However, depending upon the ships speed, aft cabins can be susceptible to prop vibration and/or cavitation, and aft thruster noise/vibration. 1
Rare Mary229 Posted August 2, 2023 #3 Share Posted August 2, 2023 (edited) You likely will feel some vibrations. Go to Halfacts.com and see if anyone has commented on your proposed cabin. Also on a famous, must be unnamed, travel website in their cruise forum there is a woman named fannish who is a wiz concerning good and bad cabins on that ship. Do a search “Volendam cabin” on that cruise forum Also @RuthC on this forum is a bit of an expert on such matters. The actual engineroom will be 2 decks below between D1904, D1891 to E1922,E1911 on Deck 1. But the auxillary equipment machinery spaces with the generators and propeller shafts will be aft of there. If you find a side view photo, the engines will be below the funnel on top. The four main engines power two generators that then drive the two propellers. There are two thrusters in the bow and two in the stern to move sideways to assist in docking. The thrusters are usually activated early in the day/morning when arriving at a port. That is when most passengers complain about the noise/vibration. Edited August 2, 2023 by Heartgrove 1

The thrusters are usually activated early in the day/morning when arriving at a port. That is when most passengers complain about the noise/vibration. Close, but not quite. First off, each diesel engine has it's own attached generator, which generate power for all uses around the ship (engine room machinery, hotel load, propulsion, etc). There are two propulsion motors that take power from these four generators to drive the propellers. The engine rooms will be as you say, pretty much under the funnel. However, the engineering spaces will run the entire length of the ship, from bow to stern, with various machinery in various spaces along the ship. As for the OP's question, below "deck 1" on the ship will be decks "01", "02", and "03", with "03" being the lowest, and this is where the engines, and most of the engine room machinery will be located. If you are all the way aft, there may be some noise early in the morning from the aft mooring station which is aftmost on deck 1, during docking. 1

oakridger Posted August 3, 2023 #11 Share Posted August 3, 2023 This is one of the reasons I enjoy Cruise Critic! A question was asked and several of our resident ship experts came out to answer the question! Thanks to all the marine experts!! Me? All I know about is food and drinks!!! 😉 ~Nancy
