Prizes for Trivia?

Recommended Posts

Highlighters, pens, lanyards and balls were given on Rhapsody OTS in June. Nothing on Liberty OTS this month. How long are they going to use the excuse of the supply issues. How come other ships have at least some small prizes but Liberty doesn’t.

We participated in Sept. on Allure, whilst watching some 20 somethings cheat with their cell phones like the dickens.  I can't stand cheaters.  I made sure they knew I was watching, when it was over, they didn't even tell their scores, the guilt had descended.  Those games don't appeal to me much anymore.

Recently on Liberty during the Logo (tech) trivia everyone was on their cell phone. Do they not make the announcement before the game starts to not use your cell phone ??

Our group “tied” another group once, so they called up one rep from each team for a show down.  Before the question, the rep of the other team says to the host, “We really have one more point, because one of your answers is wrong”

The host says, NO, I have the official answers.
The rep then says, “Well we googled it and your official answer is wrong”

Host says, “ YOU GOOGLED IT!  And how many others did you google?”

He then did not ask the final question and declared us winners.

Prize was a trinket.. I agree with others, at least give a prize like a free Milk Shake at Johnny Rockets, or a speciality coffee, or fresh squeezed OJ,

I see people cheating all the time in trivia just to win the “crap” prizes RCI gives out. I think it is safe to say cheating would be more common if the prizes were actually worth something.

I'm sorry. We just sold 30 years of Royal Caribbean prizes and loyalty gifts on Ebay. We are moving. And as much as I appreciated all of those prizes and gifts, we didn't really use many of them much once we were home. A few things we still use, the document holders, umbrellas and one of the tote bags and backpacks. I am keeping the crystal blocks.

They have been so incredibly generous over the years. And there was all the thrill of winning! I like the zipper pulls too. ☺️ But there was just so much of it. And we can't move with everything. So, DH put it up in lots on Ebay.

Hi,

I have taken part in various quizzes over the years and the prizes have gotten smaller and smaller.

Yes, I too have noticed people on their phones during the quiz. Can't say they were cheating, but it doesn't look good. But, come on! cheat for what?

The idea was to take part in a little quiz for a bit of fun to pass away a bit of spare time.

Royal also, doesn't change the questions much and sometimes you have to be careful if a question has more than one correct answer or if coming from the UK or USA means answering differently, but still correctly.

Schooner Bar quiz's used to give you Bingo cards, T-Shirts, Umbrellas, Drinks containers, keys, chains, pens and highlighters.

Funny thing is the RCI pencil you use for the quiz is now worth more than the prize which is why the staff try to insist on you returning them. Maybe they are in shorter supply than the prizes!

Bill Brunkhorst used to host a James Bond night in the Casino on the Splendour back in the early 2010s and it was a game of name that tune/singer. He would ask who sang the theme to a certain JB film and the prizes were in a bucket. Some where obvious like a bottle of Moet and some were on paper like a $90 spend in the shops. I know because I have won many of them!

Dennis Charles hosted a Name That Tune on the Anthem back in 2019 going from Bayonne to the Caribbean and back and the prize was $300 dollars of bamboo sheets from a shop in St Lucia and yes, they are very nice!

Last year during the Anthem's TA to Bayonne the prize was... not mentioned by anyone. My guess was it was just for fun. I didn't mind dressing up and doing the Can Can for $300 but for nothing...

My guess now is that RCI just want to get you into a bar area so you will buy drinks at times you may not normally do so.

Its a shame, I always used to win most of the quizzes by simply answering the questions. If by myself, I always used to find an oldish lady to join up with and make her day be giving her the prizes we had won.

As for getting things lightly wrong, the 2 questions on just about all my old cruises that ended up in some sort of dispute were the music ones and the 50s and 60s quiz in particular.

One question involved the song Build Me Up Buttercup where the original record was issued in the UK on PYE records and billed as Build Me Up Buttercup, but for some reason RCI has is down as just Build Me Up. Some got wise so started putting things like Build me Up (Buttercup) to cover both bases.

The other was the song Love Potion Number 9 originally by the Clovers, but the version played by RCI was a UK cover by the Liverpudlian group The Searchers. However, RCI have the group down as the Drifters which not only is totally wrong, but the Searchers and Drifters could not possibly be more far apart in sound. So if you put the Clovers you are wrong. If you put the Searchers you are wring even though you are right and if you put the Drifters then god knows how you would come to that conclusion other than remembering it from a previous cruise? or cheating of course.

All the arguing is amazing given the prizes involved.

I took more delight in beating a load of bigheads that went around the ship winning everything at every quiz. I won by memory as the questions were the same on every cruise back then, so it was just a case of having good memory, not using google or old paperwork from previous cruises. That was the old way of wining where people doing loads of cruises went to the quiz and wrote down all the questions and answers during one quiz and then used that during a latter quiz when the questions were the same. That really was RCI fault for not changing the questions more frequently. But... letting the CD's staff pick their own sometimes opens up the possibility of mistakes.

Again, please, please, just go and have fun at the quiz, it really should be just a nice environment to sit and relax and meet new people and get on, join up into a small group and spend a hour of so having some fun. Good prizes would be nice too, but I think those days are gone.

Mick.

This is exactly why we don't participate in trivia anymore.

Another type of quiz on some ships, which seems mainly on longer voyagers is the battle of the sexes trivia that sometimes gets split into several days of questions.

Always funny when the ladies get a question on quantum physics and the gents get a question about knitting styles.

I used to enjoy the gents winning, but found it was best to let the ladies win if the wife was playing so I got an enjoyable cruise experience instead of agro.

IIRC there weren't any prizes as such, but the whole event gave rise to meeting new people and making new friends for the rest of cruise.

I have some good memories of meeting people at the quiz and having a good time.

Sad that so many now want to cheat, but they are only cheating themselves and for what?

If you really want a prize, keep the pencil!

Also, if RCI wanted to, they could offer prizes for winning such as THE KEY for the rest of your cruise, free queue jump access to the North Star etc or even BOGOF at chops etc which may make people go there that normally wouldn't just to get one of their meals for free which would not cost RCI that much to do. Even a prize like a days free internet would not really cost the cruise line anything but it may help someone who just wants it to check in for a flight without spending money on a package.

There are so many prizes that could be given away at the quiz that possibly would cost the cruise line less than the prizes they are currently giving away.

What's worth more to you. A days free internet or a highlighter?

I really think that given the worth of the prizes and the constantly repeated questions (and in some cases made up incorrectly ones), the best thing to do is to just go to the quiz to meet new people and have a good time and not get too emotional about not winning or being cheated out of a key ring.

They can't do that.  With passengers overtly cheating, they'll have more conflicts over prizes of value than for useless trinkets.  If someone wants a highlighter so badly that they'll cheat at a silly trivia game, they can have it.

I gave up on the games last year; we had a group that showed up for every game who had been on the ship the week before and knew what the questions would be... not the crowd I hang with.

We were on a B2B and thought that perhaps we could have an edge that way. Unfortunately, we could only remember the same WRONG answers that we had the week before. 😊 We're old.

Just off Radiance. They gave away cheap little blue disposable type plastic cups with the Royal logo on them.

As someone who has won a lot of trivia contests (both onboard and in bars) I hope they get rid of prizes of value; it gives people incentives to cheat over nothing (and causes bitterness when someone feels they have been cheated).

People who typically do well are more interested in how well they do and not some marker or luggage tag...
