Rare Harters Posted December 30, 2023 #4 Share Posted December 30, 2023 Tinned sago pudding. It's no longer made here. I hadnt thought about it for many years but the subject sort of cropped up on a food forum I play on, so I Googled to see if I could still buy it. I can't

It turns out that during WW II Spam became a form of monetary exchange and the Hawaiians used it in their rice dishes. It caught on and never lost its appeal in Hawaii. I agree spam works well in kimchi fried rice! For me, kimchi was something I couldn't get past the smell of originally. But after getting into Kdramas I was more willing to give it another try. Now I really love the flavors. Seeing it featured so prominently in shows made me more curious. Looking at how much kimchi Korea eats annually as per, https://gowithguide.com/blog/south-korea-tourism-statistics-2023-all-you-need-to-know-5254 it's no surprise it's become their national food. The cultural exposure from dramas definitely opened my eyes to appreciate it more. Funny how our tastes can change over time like that.

At one time dog was also popular in Korean cuisine. Popularity does not necessarily make good cuisine. Hank

Seamus6 Posted March 31 #12 Share Posted March 31 Growing up my Mom was a great cook with rustic entrees like fried chicken, meatloaf, pot roast, etc. but used a lot of canned veggies that I hated; like canned spinach or asparagus but I like fresh asparagus and spinach now. In general I like more veggies now than as a child, which I think is very common. Also I didn't eat Mayo until my mid twenties because I thought I hated it. Mom used Miracle whip instead and I hated it. once I taste real Mayo, I loved it
Rare patrice1 Posted July 14 #13 Share Posted July 14 My favorite food as a child was Mac and cheese. Not the boxed kind, it was invented yet 😁, and now I make it from scratch at least once a month. AND, I add some cut up Spam! Grew up with it and now that I live in Lisbon, all my friends bring me Spam when they go to the US. I now like a lot more vegetables than I did as a child. CGTNORMANDIE Posted July 27 #14 Share Posted July 27 Even though I love cooking with fresh ingredients I always keep a can of Spam in my pantry. Spam makes a great substitute for pork fried rice. It goes great with fried eggs when I need a quick meal.

Hi CGT, I don't think I have ever kept a can of spam in my home.........and when Mom was alive, I can't remember ever seeing it in her pantry either.
