Discovery Princess Cigar Lounge

I’m on the Discovery Princess as we speak and I regret to inform you fellow cigar smokers that Churchill Cigar lounge has now been replaced with a Video Arcade. I’m extremely disappointed especially since I got off and purchased a box of cigars. I hope this doesn’t go fleet wide.

It is.

You can smoke them on deck 17 aft.

In the wind, rain, cold, hot, or humid weather that deck 17 aft gives us! It was nice to have a place indoors with some controlled climate even if it was smokey.

Maybe I'll see you on 17 WhiskeyAndCards? I'm on the same cruise.  Just left San Diego.

Happy Trails 🥃

I’m cut out to be a mailman. Rain, sleet, or snow. I’ll be in 17 aft on Discovery with a cigar in 7 days!

It's 2024. Time to stop whining like little babies and grow up. There's smoking areas outside for you to use. No staff member anywhere, in any business, should have to put up with working in an environment with smoke. They don't on land.. so why should they have to on a ship??

So the staff on 17 aft are not exposed to the smoke? Funny you should say anything about the staff when I have seen many of the Officers and some crew in Churchills lounge having a cigarette or two.

Also you are incorrect about the "They don't on land" comment.  Have you been to any of the Indian Casinos? It's a smoke fest. At least in the Churchill the smoking was contained in one room!

Happy Trails  🥜

It’s 2024 and the vent filter systems they installed eliminates smoke quickly. We go to a cognac and cigar bar in the area because we love the bar and I don’t smoke. The bartender we love has worked there 7 years. I guess I didn’t notice that ball and chain that is attached to him.

I believe it is going fleetwide, at least from what I’ve heard.
Many of the staff and officers do smoke and are also unhappy about the smoking lounges being turned into arcades.  I believe there are places in the world that allow no indoor smoking while sailing in the waters.  Australia?
Personally, I fill out every single survey asking that all indoor smoking be eliminated but I also understand smokers also have paid for their cruises and need a place to light up.  I know Celebrity went completely nonsmoking indoors several years back and it doesn’t seem to have negatively impacted their business.

The Discovery seems to have to worst ventilation system to eliminate smoke.  It can be smelled all throughout Crooners, as a matter of fact.

That is what could have been replaced. In RSSC they replaced all filter systems. The exhaust fans were amazing. I would never sit in a place full of any type of smoke.

We sailed on Celebrity Ascent in January, and it was wonderful to use the casino every evening without having to be exposed to smoke.  The cigar and cigarette smokers are provided with comfortable outdoor areas with sofas, chairs and coffee tables with bar service and away from passenger traffic.

The casino was packed every night and people really were enjoying themselves.

If Celebrity can do this, all cruiselines can do this.  I spoke to a number of people who said the non smoking policy on Celebrity ships is the reason the won’t sail on other lines.

Princess can please both smokers and non smokers if they choose to do so.  I’m willing to bet, pun intended, that Celebrity casinos are raking in (did it again) as much or even more than Princess, so it’s not that.

We need to keep on telling Princess to do better for smokers and non smokers.

I guess I am a bit spoiled as our state that has 100’s of casino’s and a law that includes anywhere that allows smoking they must be in a separate room with a certain coded exhaust system. I don’t smoke and my DH may have 12 cigars all year, mainly on vacation. So no skin in this except I think Princess is doing this out of $$ not the goodness of health.  An arcade is a casino for the young without any luck of winning.

So true.  Here in Canada smoking laws are very, very strict.  No smoking anywhere in public both  indoors or outdoors.  Basically, you can only smoke on your own property.  However,  casinos have designated outdoor, fenced in areas.  In the winter, they have installed outdoor heaters which aren’t much use when the snow is blowing in your face. lol. I agree with you about the arcades.

There is a good chance it is a little of both. Princess most likely has the feedback and data to support/inspire this change. If Princess wants to start attracting families to their brand and ships like the Discovery that have little for young people to do, an arcade is both marketing and revenue center.

No. It doesn't.

Piazza, Princess Theater and Take Five have heavy smoke odor. Cigars and cigarettes.

That's a huge change from when I was a kid and visited Canada; I remember people smoking while waiting for elevators at our hotel. America had already banned smoking indoors but we had culture shock that Canada was behind the times. More recently, while staying in Vancouver before a cruise, I was surprised to see so many people smoking marijuana while walking outside. Again, it had already been legalized in my state (Washington) but we still didn't (don't) have people doing it out in public.

It’s actually illegal to smoke cannabis or anything else outside in public.  Many times it’s tourists who enjoy the fact the cannabis is legal in Canada so they take advantage of it and don’t care if they’re breaking the law.   If you come to Toronto, you won’t see this.  I personally have not.

I wonder if there will be noise from the arcade. We had lunch at pizza place last week. They have a wall of arcade games & the noise was was pretty unpleasant.

I was talking about the establishments around here that allows smoking in the assigned areas that are enclosed. If Princess doesn’t have an up-to-date system for smoking, then that is not good.  Companies have developed great systems. I am sure that aren’t cheap.
