kaymoz Posted April 3 #1 Share Posted April 3 (edited) I know some ships have been converting former self-service "laundrettes" to cabins, so I thought it was time to survey-update this situation. While many ships offer a laundry service, at varying price points, many of us simply prefer to DIY. And machine washing sometimes beats the bathroom sink! kaymoz Posted April 10 Author #8 Share Posted April 10 Thank you all for this feedback -- but so disappointed to hear about HAL has eliminated them all. I would have liked to make HAL 'my' brand, but the laundry situation is a turn-off. Our last voyage with HAL was on the Prinsendam, which totally spoiled me forever! kaymoz Posted April 10 Author #9 Share Posted April 10 I just saw the Points Guy did a story on this question -- just two days after I asked. Are they reading Cruise Critic???!!!! https://thepointsguy.com/guide/cruise-ship-laundry/

I would have liked to make HAL 'my' brand, but the laundry situation is a turn-off. HAL has (apparently) the best ships' laundry on the seas. They obey special care instructions including AIR DRY. It is very reasonable if you accumulate a bag-full to send in, which is no different than dirtying a washer-load full. As far as packing that is. If you do the math, depending on the length of your voyage and if you are flying and paying to check bags, the daily unlimited laundry at $7 or $9 per day PER CABIN (not per person) could lessen your luggage needs enough to pay for itself. kaymoz Posted April 10 Author #11 Share Posted April 10 The reluctance to use a laundry service vs DIY is not just about cost, but the challenge of clothes being “away” for some time while the ship batch laundry and delivery process unfolds. When travelling carry-on only and not packing that many clothes to begin with, this can really matter! I like that I can come back to the ship and change into my ‘dinner dress,’ while putting my day clothes into the wash to have ready to go the next morning if needed. This is especially reassuring if I’ve only packed one fleece zip top or one pair of jeans, for example.

celereflect Posted May 18 #13 Share Posted May 18 Do the Princess ships have self service laundry?
kaymoz Posted May 18 Author #14 Share Posted May 18 I just found this on the Princess FAQ page: Laundry Services Take advantage of our onboard laundry, press-only and professional cleaning service for a nominal fee. All laundry is returned within 48 hours, or on the same day with our express service. Full suite guests and Elite Captain’s Circle members also enjoy complimentary laundry and professional cleaning service, except for same day service, which carries a charge. Launderette services may be impacted to adhere to the Health and Safety protocols set by the CDC. For your convenience, Princess vessels have self-service launderettes where washers, dryers and laundry products are available for a negligible charge. You can conveniently purchase tokens with your Medallion. Please note that irons/ironing boards are available in the self-service laundry rooms. Ironing and using personal clothes steamers are not permitted in any stateroom. Although rare, on certain itineraries environmental regulations relating to the consumption of water may impact the operating hours of the launderettes. ecs66 Posted May 20 #15 Share Posted May 20 Every Princess ship we've sailed has had a laundromat on each deck where there are passenger cabins. Very convenient! When packing, throw in a few detergent sheets so you don't have to buy their stuff. The charges go on your room bill. We sailed Celebrity Silhouette once, and there was no laundromat. All Princess ships we've sailed have had had self-service laundry. I know that "sending out" your laundry is something people like to do, but I wouldn't, even if it were free. Seems a little creepy. Is there a guarantee than when your stuff is being washed, it isn't combined with (shudder) other people's dirty duds?

No of course not. If I send in one shirt or outfit, I am not expecting them to run one large industrial machine just for my garment(s). That it what soap (detergent) and water are for.
arles7 Posted June 30 #18 Share Posted June 30 Since we are in the saving money section... I'll confess that I don't need to use the laundry on cruises. Mostly it would be just for underwear. To not have to do laundry of essentials, I bring along old underwear that I can toss along the way. Throughout the year, I keep all the items that I would normally toss that have worn out elastic bands in the waist and t-shirts where the collar droops. Then I can wear them on vacation and toss them without doing laundry - with the added bonus that this frees up space in my luggage for any souvenirs. Laundry was a necessity without paying for extra luggage! We did it every 7-10 days. Always a port day--usually a day we got back to the ship before most others or possibly a day we did not go ashore. Did do a month last year w/ 20 days on MSC (no self-serve), carryon & backpack only. Merino wool was my workhorse--it didn't even smell after a few hours in a VERY smoky casino. But I did handwash delicates, sleepwear & a few non-merino tops.
