North Vancouver Cruiser Posted May 27 #1 Posted May 27 Who do we contact in BC to complain about not allowing HAL to sell Platinum Insurance? I understand in October 2023, HAL could no longer offer Platinum Insurance for cruisers. If I lived in Alberta or Sask or Ontario, I could buy it, but not in BC. What department or organization do I complain to to reverse this decision. I was able to purchase it for our last Grand 94 day cruise as we paid for it 6 months in advance. We hope to go on a Grand or World cruise in the near future and it is nice to have that piece of mind when you are paying over $50,000 each for the cruise. We used the platinum insurance when we had to cancel a 45 day one due to covid. 1

We haven't been able to buy Princess's insurance, with their 100% CFAR coverage, here in Quebec for years. The state of New York also recently stopped allowing such insurance as well. Local insurance laws can be strange....

HAL can no longer offer insurance in BC because the company that offers the HAL insurance is unwilling to comply with the rules and regulations that govern all BC insurance suppliers. This a commercial decision on the part of the company. Probably caused by the cost of compliance and the expected revenue stream. Your efforts would be better directed to finding a Canadian insurance company that can meet your needs. You might start the research with this thread 3

North Vancouver Cruiser Posted May 28 Author #5 Posted May 28 Thanks for your answers. Regarding the insurance, I buy online from a US company, it is not like I go to a local travel agency and buy the cruise. So it is the fact that I am a BC resident that I can not buy platinum insurance and any international company cannot sell it to any BC resident. That seems kinda funny to me. That the disqualifying factor is that I am a BC resident who purchased my cruise through a US company directly. That really bugs me, it is the principle of the thing. With world and grand cruises, I purchase them 2 years before and who knows what will happen in that 2 years. I will pursue it and let you know.
canadianbear Posted May 28 #6 Posted May 28 You do know, even as a BC resident, you can still purchase HAL’s Standard plan. It isn’t as good as the other one but is an option especially for cancel for any reason. 1
North Vancouver Cruiser Posted May 28 Author #7 Posted May 28 Yes, I purchased that for our 14 day cruise in July. It is the ones that cost over $30,000 that concerns me and booking so far in advance (2 years). I liked the fact that the cruise was covered plus the airfare. Also the standard plan, does it cover cancel for any reason or do you have to have a medical issue to cancel?

As far as I know for the Standard coverage you can cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure and are covered for 80%.
