JH just posted that the first drink will automatically be the free one -

GOLD, PLATINUM AND DIAMOND
COMPLIMENTARY DRINK UPDATE

So as you are aware today marks the start of cruises where guests no longer have to wait until the last day of the cruise and the previous restrictions on being served their complimentary drink and it was brilliant to see how most were very, very pleased.

Having read all the comments the beards and I saw that some of you had some questions about how the bartenders and bar waiters will know etc and so we have made an operational decision which will make things easier.

I will therefore list below all the information for you.

The complimentary drink will now become the                      WELCOME ABOARD – WELCOME HOME beverage.

So if you are Gold, Platinum or Diamond the bartenders and bar waiters will see from your Sail and Sign card ( or boarding pass if you haven’t collected it yet from outside your cabin)  that you are entitled to your complimentary beverage and so will not charge you anything at all.
So please, make that first drink something special and raise a glass to the start of the Fun you deserve so much.

The complimentary drink can be used at the Java Blue so if your first drink is a specialty coffee or milk shake then that’s all covered for you.

For people sailing from Galveston and New York where there is a restriction on Cheers etc not starting until day two, please know that this does NOT apply to your complimentary                     WELCOME ABOARD – WELCOME HOME drink.

So there you go – make that first drink something you really have been looking forward to and whether it is a , a pint of cold beer, a virgin Pina Daiquiri, a Mo Heat O ,  a Martini with olives and grits or
a Kiss on the Cucumber Sunset it will I am sure mark the start of another massive dollop of FUN

cheers

That's a good change, easiest way to do it tbh. The first drink you order during the cruise is automatically paid for by your VIFP status.

If you thought bars were crowded on embarkation day before, imagine when all the diamonds and plats are all trying to get the fancy frozen drinks as their first beverage... 😁

Well, since we're on the ship first anyway,  shouldn't be a problem. 😁

Every time we have been offered it, it was a choice of when to use.

Not giving loyalty points to certain fares would certainly make a lot not cruise carnival. I'd want loyalty pts.  I cant see them taking that away. Not getting shareholder credit is one thing but not allo

Building loyalty to a brand imo is smart.

So you are in favor of granting loyalty points to passengers sailing on free cruises? How much loyalty does that take?

ALL loyalty programs are marking programs and none are sustainable without change.

Very smart for ports like Galveston where alcohol choices are limited until you leave Texas waters (and Mobile and maybe others).

So those who order a bottled water are going to be surprised tat is their free drink.

If you have a free drink coming, the POS will grab it first, although there is probably a way to override.

I have done it, not sure if it was a Diamond only thing, but it was not difficult.

I see the free drink limit is now up to $16 plus 18% gratuity.

One (1) complimentary specialty coffee, soda or alcoholic beverage with a value no greater than $16.00 + 18% gratuity. Redeemable at any venue. Will be automatically applied to the first transaction once onboard. Alcoholic beverages may only be consumed by adults of applicable legal drinking age.

Thats why Im wondering if a free casino drink counts as a "first transaction". They do scan your sail and sign even for DOU drinks

I enjoyed the break from the endless back and forth of the same opinions being posted about the same subject. It made me smile a bit. May you both...live long and prosper.

You're going to wait until the casino opens to drink?

They enter your folio number and it shows up on your bill as a 0 charge since it also counts towards your 15. I would enjoy a drink somewhere around the ship before the ship sets sail to take full advantage of the free drink "just incase" the casino transaction counts.

Haha not usually. I’m just usually not a day-drinker …and our next cruise is our first ultra so I think there’s a cocktail party the first evening as well. I’d rather “ save” my free drink for the next night at alchemy ( or whatever the equivalent is on the Firenze)

We'll have to wait and see how its implemented. With the way the current system is set up, you can tell them whether you'd like to redeem your VIFP drink or not.

The T&C are clear.

I didn't realize they had already updated the VIFP program. Simple enough!

Make sure you get a good one as your first drink, as it lists soda and you don't want your freebie to be a coke....... I mean pepsi 😉 .

Gamblers already earn "loyalty program" cruise days when we're on free casino cruises.  The free cruises are the only thing that really keeps me "loyal" to Carnival.  That said, my loyalty is for sale.  Hear that RCL and MSC?  I've been on about 30 Carnival cruises and one heavily-discounted MSC cruise.  I like the Carnival product better even with the cutbacks, but if MSC offered me free cruises, like an adopted dog I could learn to be loyal all over again.

Lately it seems that many threads are turning into off topic debates. Just saying....

Right? Usually by the same handful of posters. Too bad there isn't a way to "mute" the ones who love to bicker back and forth.

Yes, free cruises do accumulate points, but nothing is earned and Carnival doesn't owe anyone anything. Carnival has wrecked their loyalty program by allowing them to be accumulated.

As I;m sure I have said, gamblers are fickle and Carnival isn't interested in a bidding war.

I don't like RCL but have taken a free Celebrity cruise. They keep sending me some offers, but I don't care for their casinos, but do like the smoke free part.
