Princess Medallion

What about when ordering a drink? Remove it from your pocket to show to the bartender? We've been on 4 previous Princess cruises, the last being in 2012. Long before medallions!

...

The Bar Steward or Bartender may ask you for your cabin #. Quite often we just tell the cabin # without being asked -- saves time and errors. The Steward's device can look up the package (and your photo) using your cabin #.

Just a little background on how the Medallions work... there are sensors all over the ship. They look like pucks or little smoke detectors (top right of the pic). They are positioned such that the system can localize you (your Medallion) to one of the sensors. The bartender's system (one of the tablets you see) will show the faces of everyone at the bar. They're supposed to be able to pick you out of the collection of faces on the screen and charge your account accordingly.

The reality is that when it's busy, that whole process is a giant pain in the ass, and the bartenders, in those situations, almost always just ask for cabin numbers, write the drink down on a notepad, then enter them later (minutes or hours).

The trick with the Guinness cans -- that's another matter and has nothing to do with Medallions.

You will find the sensors in your stateroom, too...

You always need to physically tap the medallion when you get on and off the ship and in the casino.

I have been asked to tap it at the International Cafe frequently but rarely have it scanned by servers or bartenders.

My experience is similar to what others have mentioned. I carry mine in my pocket and have no issues. It's really no different than carrying a cruise card. Most times the reader location system works. More times than not in lounges and at bars the waiter requested my cabin number. You do have to tap the medallion going on and off the ship and at casino slots. At casino table games the pit boss requires your medallion if you ask to charge chip purchase to your onboard account.

On my last cruise I noticed that after 4 or 5 days the medallion was not working very well. It was a weak battery. I visited passenger services and they provided me with a new one.

speaking of medallions I see some people are wearing what looks like a watch with the medallion in - I know you can buy something through princess, but can you buy something similar through amazon or something?

Also would an apple airtag holder like this fit the medallion?

Did the price of medallions just go up to $7

There has *never* been a "charge" for the medallions...though if youdo not get either Plus or Premier there is a shipping charge of $10 if you wish to receive before you sail.

We have two of those and two rubber watch bands.

The airtag clip can be attached to clothes or a lanyard.

You can buy a range of medallion accessories on board which would be my recommendation. You can buy AirTag accessories off amazon but your only saving few dollars.

Yes, that would work.  On Amazon I purchased https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C3MB9Q2C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1  for my husband & I.  It is comfortable & my husband never took it off, not even to shower.
