It depends on what you want to do.

If you want to visit Mayan ruins, do the Western in the winter since the summer is surface-of-the-sun hot and you will be devoured by mosquitos.

Many Eastern routes stop in the Bahamas and the water can feel, not cold, but chillier in wintertime than it would be in the summer. So if you want to snorkel that's something to consider.

That said, for 10 days I'd go Southern in a heartbeat, especially on a smaller ship that can get into some of the less-visited ports.

Interesting question. I have been pretty much to all Western and Eastern ports. Not Southern. Someone mentioned Southern has less party boats. Considering Carnival to the Southern Islands. Is this still a PARTY cruise???

Southern.  The A-B-C's are among our favorites, along with Barbados.  Eastern would be next if you are including St. Lucia and Antigua in that grouping, as some itineraries do.  St. Kitts has some nice beaches.  The only real interest in the Western for us is Roatan, and Cozumel for the back side.  Don't mind Grand Cayman, but really dislike that it is a tender port.
