How Strict is VIP check in?

We were in Cat 12 a couple years ago, while our 24 year old daughter and boyfriend were in inside cabin across the hall from us. We went to VIP check in and they just followed us in there. We weren't going to ask to have them get VIP check in, but the girl behind the counter said it was no problem. She went and got their sea pass cards and couldn't have been nicer about it. They would have been very willing to wait in regular line and only came in with us while we got our check in. So, I guess it just depends on who is working in the VIP area that day.:p

My experience's:

1st time as Platinum cruiser me and my partner, and my mother. My cabin was VIP and hers was not, (She is in a wheelchair and could not check in herself even if I wanted her to). Waited forever at Long Beach just to get through the X-Ray/Metal detector, before we got through, the security gaurd retrieved our VIP docs/SS cards for us so we could check mom in together. We ended up re-signing everything again new tickets for Sail and sign were generated, the whole process took 5 times longer than if we had gone in the regular line.

Next crusie. Just me and my friend Froufie. Yes Billrsrob favorite person. we were Directed to both go to VIP when they saw my docs. She was willing to wait in the regular line but the gracious host at the check in said that it was not a problem and retireved my Platinum and her gold cards and onto the ship we went. So I understand that the privledge of being VIP and Platinum is a perk and if everyone bypassed the regular line then it would defeat the purpose, but once in a while, when the circumstances are justified they can bend the rules just a bit to start off yor cruise on the best possible way.

I agree that people with a disability should be able to board asap.

I just don't understand why people can not follow the rules. Why should the other people in your group get the same treatment as you when they are not VIP and you are. VIP people earn the right for that status. they follow the rules. It is as simple as that.

Robb

I'm paying for the other which is my son and grandchildren so they should board with me.

I booked two rooms. My wife and I in a cat 11 wrap, and my 6 year old in the adjoining regular cat 8C (aft balcony).

We made our way to VIP check in, and I placed both sets of documents on the counter.

The lady behind the counter took the first packet, and then the second, and slid them back at me, proclaiming that I “somehow had someone else’s tickets.” I’ll leave my own interpretation to myself on how she looked at me down her nose as she did this “slide.”

She changed her tune REAL fast when I pointed out it was for my daughter. And I never even hardly felt bad when she had to walk "all the way down there" to get my daughters key.

BTW, the regular line DID move faster.

I have to ask~~ your 6 year old had an 8C alone?? Cuz they way you wrote that, that's how it looks! :D:confused::D I'm 43 and I still have to share a room~ lol~

Wow the 'resurrection' of a very old thread!

I am happy to report I am now 'OFFICIALLY' platinum so no more 'breaking' the rules (for those that were upset!). However I am travelling with a newbie and hoping to bring her along with me (separate cabins - this is her first cruise). I understand that if I put her on my credit card that she can board VIP with me? (and then we can get this changed at the purser's desk?) - otherwise......we can ask nicely I guess (as was done in the past!).

I think the niceness factor has alot to do with what you get, Oct 9th we boarded as VIP b/c we had a suite and the lady was a whole lot nicer to us then she was to the milestoner's (not sure if that's the right word) in front of us :-) Not that she was rude to them by any means.

Dumb question...

How do you get to be a VIP and what does it get you? Obviously I have learned from this thread that you get to check in on a special line, but what else do you get?

Thanks!

The VIP line saves you about 10 minutes on embarkation, not that big a deal in the first place if you ask me.

We are a family of 5, three in Cat 12 and two in cat 6. Just wondering how strict VIP embarcation was, can we all board together?

if there's no "vip" on their tickets, the answer is no. none of their stuff will even be at the vip area.

We have a suite and another room booked, our PVP told us that if we are all under the same credit card for S&S then we all board together VIP, guess we'll find out if thats true when we arrive at the terminal :D

Yes but if you have to wait you are able to wait in a nice VIP room depending on ports......which is better than being in the cattle call:D

We have had some in our group board with us and they did not have VIP on their docs or tags.......

i remember one time, i actually boarded after the people that were in the regular line behind me before the vip/non vip split!

Happened to me as well, when a guy in front of us in the VIP line was giving the girl a hard time for something or rather....we would have been better off in the regular line.

It's true. If they are under your credit card they need to check in with you.......

Last week on Glory, a family of 3 with the grandparents came into the VIP checkin room in Norfolk. A gentleman told them that normally the non-VIP folks could not check in there, but since it was early and the line wasn't long, he let them stay.

Actually, people going through the regular check in were done before we were.

The thing is, the VIP cards are in one place. The others aren't, so the person checking in those non-VIP people has to go get the others. While they might not mind, the actual VIP cruisers waiting in line probably do. I mean, what's the point if you have to wait for the employees to track down the other cards?

In some ports, it isn't a big deal, but there in Norfolk, the regular check-in counters were on the other side of the building.

I could be wrong but ports like Miami they are able to print out cards when you check in now. I recall we checked in with 4 platinums and 2 golds and she printed them out on the same machine. Sorta like how they do club cards at the casinos.....we checked in at the kiosk and gave her our receipt......anyone else have this experience?
