meggie711 Posted July 7, 2007 #1 Share Posted July 7, 2007 instead of flying? I know there are SO many who fly in for their cruises, but wondered who else drives to port, and how close the nearest (or most favored) port is to them? We're in south Georgia and drive approximately 3 hours to Port Canaveral. We drove 7 hours to Miami for another. I'm wishing Jacksonville would get more ships and iteneraries. suezyq50 Posted July 7, 2007 #2 Share Posted July 7, 2007 We drive from Rome, GA, which is north of Atlanta. It is about an 8 hr. drive for us to Port Canaveral, which isn't too bad. I would like to see more ships leave from Charleston, which is where my sister lives.
planceer Posted July 7, 2007 #3 Share Posted July 7, 2007 We will be driving down to Mobile for an October cruise on the HOLIDAY. It's only 4.5 hours. Last year we drove to Tampa and that was a killer for a cruise on the MIRACLE. We are closer to Charlston than we are to Jacksonville. :D Jack
sasysutler Posted July 7, 2007 #4 Share Posted July 7, 2007 We're 2 hours from Port Canaveral/jacksonville or Tampa. We're cruising from Fll in august.
Cotton Posted July 7, 2007 #5 Share Posted July 7, 2007 I can drive 1.5 hrs. and get to either N.O. or Mobile ports.:) When visiting my sister just outside Galveston, it was EZ. When visiting my DD in Malibu, also EZ.
Doug&Suzy-Q Posted July 7, 2007 #6 Share Posted July 7, 2007 We are in Clermont Florida..directly west of Orlando......... Tampa is 1 hr. 10 minutes Canaveral is 1 hr. 25 minutes (depending on traffic) Ft. Lauderdale is 4 hours (give or take depending on the traffic) I agree, I would love to see more in Jacksonville.......
VaBeachCruisers897 Posted July 7, 2007 #7 Share Posted July 7, 2007 I could drive 15 mins to Norfolk, VA but there are very few ships leaving out of Norfolk. We usually fly to either FL or San Juan
cusyl Posted July 7, 2007 #8 Share Posted July 7, 2007 We are one hour from Tampa. Usually take the Cruise Connection bus to FLL or MIA
RuthlessBoss Posted July 7, 2007 #9 Share Posted July 7, 2007 We also can drive to the ports from central Florida. When going on the Alaska cruise, I hated the hurry up and wait game to fly to the west coast.
janetz Posted July 7, 2007 #10 Share Posted July 7, 2007 3 hours, NY. 2 hours, Boston.....Have to fly :( to Florida!
Redsoxfan11 Posted July 8, 2007 #11 Share Posted July 8, 2007 I am in the same boat as Janetz. 40 minutes Boston and 3 hours NY. The cruises that leave from these ports are nothing that interest me. Too much out at sea time. I have been to Bermuda too many times because that was our closest Spring Break place in college, lol.
Deb1113 Posted July 8, 2007 #12 Share Posted July 8, 2007 I could be driven to NY (about 90 minutes) for my Sept. cruise, but I'm taking Greyhound and leaving the driving to them.
George W. Bush Posted July 8, 2007 #13 Share Posted July 8, 2007 My next cruise is out of NYC, which is within driving distance--however between the cost to park ($18/day!!!?) and gas I've decided to go with a van service. It'll actually be cheaper and much less of a hassle.
2Cruise4Ever Posted July 8, 2007 #14 Share Posted July 8, 2007 Parking at the NYC terminal is now $24 a day; or pay for the monthly pass for $180 which is less than that. We've taken AMTRAK to NYC in the past, but we're driving next year. We'd like to be able to bring more with us and our huge mini van is perfect for that. It still ends up being cheaper than the 4 of us flying OR taking AMTRAK. For Norfolk, we're driving (3 day cruise to nowhere!!!) For Miami, we'll fly. It'd take about 18 hours or more to drive there!!
molly361 Posted July 8, 2007 #15 Share Posted July 8, 2007 We're about 2 - 3 hours drive from Miami and Fort Lauderdale, being within driving distance instead of having to fly is one more factor that makes cruising very appealing to us!!!
ScottCrew Posted July 8, 2007 #16 Share Posted July 8, 2007 I live 35 minutes from Galveston. Actually, I am a student at UTMB (University of Texas Medical Branch) which is in Galveston so I'm on the island regularly. My route to campus passes right by the ships and if you sit on a certain side of our classrooms you can see the ships in port. It's a tease! AnyTime Cruiser Posted July 8, 2007 #17 Share Posted July 8, 2007 I'm 4 to 5 hours from Long Beach and San Diego ports. But I'm tired of that side of Mexico! Everyplace else is by air and that's getting expensive. $1200/for 3 to fly to Galveston, even more to Miami.
DisneyNutMary Posted July 8, 2007 #18 Share Posted July 8, 2007 I can drive to the terminal in NYC for my next cruise. But taking a cab will probably be a lot cheaper. I am also very close to the Brooklyn terminal where the Queen Mary 2 docks, and to Bayonne NJ where Royal Caribbean has a terminal.
BoooR6 Posted July 8, 2007 #19 Share Posted July 8, 2007 I live in Jacksonville and am sailing the Celebration soon. Im looking forward to driving 20 minutes for free rather than flying to Ft. Lauderdale for $300. Does anyone know if carnival is going to add any new iteneraries or other cruise lines will sail out of Jax???

LoveThisCruisingThing Posted July 8, 2007 #21 Share Posted July 8, 2007 I drove from Sacramento,CA to Seattle last year. It was part of my vacation. Saw a friend in WA and then went to my sister's (in a suburb of Seattle). Took a couple of days but it worked out well. This year I am going from San Francisco (about 1 1/2 hours or so). I don't like flying anymore so figure I will leave from CA ports if at all possible. I can handle the drive to LA or San Diego. I guess if I want to do European ports I am going to have to fly . rebeljohn Posted July 9, 2007 #22 Share Posted July 9, 2007 We have driven to ALL of our ports. The wife and I enjoy the drive. We have driven to: Norfolk..............3 hours Charleston.........4 hours Port Canaveral....9 hours Tampa.............10 hours Ft. Lauderdale...13 hours Miami...............13 hours
frexpar Posted July 9, 2007 #23 Share Posted July 9, 2007 1.5 hours to either New Orleans or Mobile, although my first cruise isn't until September 13. I'm SO excited about Triumph coming to NOLA and another ship replacing the Holiday. I may have sailed out of Mobile before if it weren't for everyone talking about the "pee smell" all over the Holiday.
ddoll Posted July 9, 2007 #24 Share Posted July 9, 2007 We live in RI. We had the choice of driving to either NYC or Boston for our Bermuda cruise. We choose NYC every time: can't beat that sail away in front of the Statue of Liberty! :D
gtalum Posted July 9, 2007 #25 Share Posted July 9, 2007 For us it's 45 minutes to the Port of Tampa, 2.5 hours to Port Canaveral, and 3.5 hours or so to Port Everglades and Port of Miami.
