  1. i have commented on these questions previously, and a number or people responding were actually hostile, but i feel whatever works. sometimes the ends really do justify the means. in any event, if youre booked into a suite, the concierge can probably get you dinner reservations in any of the specialty restaurants, at a decent time, same with getting off the ship at disembarkation day. he /she usually has a specific meeting place, and walks you right off. total time 15-20 minutes. if you're not booked into a suite, i suggest early in your cruise, you introduce your self to the maitre'd, ($20 handshake helps a great deal) and he'll probably be able to get you into cagneys while a great number of people reading this post might find the concept of the "vegas handshake" rude, offensive and reeking of a sense of entitlement, it works! only specialty restaurant where they may be a seating problem is teppanyaki. if you are one of he people that believe slipping someone a $20 to get what you want is offensive, then as soon as you get on board, there are stations, usually by the pool or at guest services that allow yu to make dinner reservations.
  2. welcome to the wonderful world of ncl arithmetic. if you follow the ncl sale adds, regardless of the wording, nothing ever changes. you might get lucky and find a price drop (some people have posted they have) or a great deal (depending on your perspective ) they now offer a 15 day cruise from tahiti to sydney with a really great price for a balcony cabin, this december, but in general they dont offer ice cubes in winter. by the way, i am not knocking ncl, ive cruised with them since 2010 and at diamond status. its just when booking with them, study the offer carefully, examine "ALL" the costs, and most importantly caveat emptor!
  3. you can try and beg (but that probably wont work) if youre offered a chance to bid for an upgrade, you can and try and hope for the best. there really is no cheap way to get an actual haven suite. think of it like this: if there was, everybody would be trying to do so, and the haven concept would lose a great deal of it's exclusivity. my dear old mother once told me "son, you get what you pay for"
  4. italy wont take anything but euros. i would take about $1,000 worth of euros (considering the length of your vacation), and just exchange whatever you dont spend when you get home
  5. ysolde. if youre booked into suite (not a club balcony) or a haven you can eat breakfast and lunch at the specially designated restaurants every day of your cruise. usually moderno and cagneys. if the ship, has and exclusive "haven" then you can have breakfast lunch and dinner in the haven restaurants. remember, you also get the services of a 24 hr on call butler, as well as the services of a concierge. you also get cabin steward twice a day rather than once. there is an option, where you dont have to accept the drink package or the dining package. the cost for extra wi-fi minutes is minimal if you want them. even with $50 off shore excursions, we hire taxi's at almost every port. turns out much cheaper (even with the $50 discount) by the way, cabins in a "suite" or haven are essentially similar, the difference being access to the haven area
  6. i can always count on you old buddy, how do i access cruise plum?
  7. while in theory, its a great idea, it probably wouldnt work in the execution. how can anyone possibly keep track of the prices for all the ncl cabins, on all the ncl ships, for all the itineraries? while you may attempt to keep current on your specific sailing, how does that help someone else on a different cruise, or even on your cruise but a different cabin category?
  8. they have a great program for teens under 18 (entourage) while my grandson is now 24, he sailed with us until he was 20. we always signed him up for the entourage program. he met some terrific teens (some of which he is still in contact with) and except for some excursions and a few meals, we hardly saw him throughout the cruise. im sure your 17 year old will have a great time. the entourage has a designated room just for teens
  9. just got off a b2b july 27th thru aug 15th. southampton to copenhagen, copenhagen to stockholm. currently booked b2b oct 2024. venice (trieste) to athens, athens to tel aviv. planning onspending a few day pre-cruise in venice, an a few days post in jerusalem
  10. read my lips.... BALCONY!!!!. if your wife needs the balcony, she'll be most unhappy with the ocean view, and then you'll have to live with it for the rest of the cruise (and maybe even for the rest of your life)
  11. prior to cruising, my wife and i usually tried to spend a week or 2 on various carribbean islands. this gave us many days to explore, sample the local cuisine, handicrafts, etc. i was personally told this by various shopkeepers "when cruise ships are in port, they all jack up their prices. if more than 1 ship in port, youre talking about thousands of people descending on the shops. jacking up your price makes sense, No? so caveat emptor
  12. try and google them, some sights have reviews from prior users. usually, viator is pretty reliable. what we do, however, is hire a taxi as soon as we get off the ship, show the driver the excursion description from the ship, and negotiate a price.
  13. dress code is "EXTREMELY" casual!. you can dress up if you wish, when there are nights designated for photos, but mostly, you will be in the minority. jeans and t shirts mostly for men, women also very casual. le bistro requires men to have collared shirts, but thats the extent
  14. why dont you simply book a room in anchorage, relax, spend the night, an then get the same flight you already have the very next day. takes care of a great deal of travel stress, and you get a few hrs to explore another city and what it has to offer
  15. we were recently on the b2b dawn . my friend who travels with us is 78 and always gets the 2nd bedroom. her share of the cruise is much cheaper than if she booked a cabin on her own, and the 3 of us get all the perks that come with a suite. she has no problems with the room also, it gives you the luxury of a 2nd bathroom and shower. imho, GO FOR IT!!!
  16. while the owners suite is probably much more opulent, if youre sharing a cabin with another couple, the 2 bedroom is a no brainer. even if the other couple were my sister and her husband, who wants to share a bathroom with 2 other people. one of the main features is the 2nd bedroom and bath. we usually travel witha close friend and always book the2 bedroom suite. besides which, i believe the escape is a much nicer ship
  17. other than that, feel free to rant on and on .......
  18. imho! you are neither the good guy or the bad guy!. 1st off, the fact that your girlfriend cant go with you on the cruise is certainly no reason to break up. amongst other reasons previously expressed, maybe she was uncomfortable with the cabin sleeping arrangements. she does have a young child, and im sure you were not the one planning to sleep on the sofa. youre the good guy for asking her but should not overreact when she said no on the other hand (and im not trying to be judgmental) why dont you try dating someone closer to your own age. They'd probably have children old enough were school isnt an issue, and maybe more inclined to travel with you. give the woman break it's only been 4 1/2 months into your relationship
  19. just print your tags off with a sturdier stock paper, wait until youre ready to go to the port, and i agree, borrow a stapler from the hotel, or bring along a small one for personal use.
  20. last year we took the b2b from venice (trieste) since venice proper, is an amazing and beautiful city, we flew in a few days early. Prior to leaving the states, we arranged for a shuttle to pick us up at our hotel in venice (ac marriott) and drive us to trieste. We spent the day prior to embarkation, at the doubletree. they had an ncl desk in the lobby. we signed up, the shuttle bus arrived promptly at 10, and drove us directly to the port, no problems. why would i ever consider taking the train, if i have to schlep my luggage aboard? there were 3 of us and it was a 14 day b2b. while i am certainly not criticizing anyone else's plans, there are ways to make your journey much smoother than poor catbro. btw, hope you have fully recovered.
  21. mcarab1. just chiming in again. to simplify, pick a port, and google any question that comes to mind. ie what to do in (fill in the port). if youre planning in fly in early, or stay a few days after cruise, again google for hotels. you can type in a major chain, use a hotel booking website. as we usually fly in a few days early if leaving from a port outside the u.s. i google shuttle services. believe me, it works, and you dont need to be a technological wizard to figure it out. as the cruise gets closer, (and we have over a year +) i'd be more than happy to help you out. last year we stayed atr a marriott before and after our cruise from athens, next year we're planning on staying over in jerusalem for a few extra days. im planning on checking google next summer, to see if there are any 1 day tours to jordon (petra). as the date grows closer, and you think i can be of any help (especially if you tell me what specifically youre interested in, i'll give you my email address and we can go from there. if im over reaching, i apologize up front
  22. turtles06. hey! was this comment even necessary? they were just saying thanks, for clarifying the port of disembarkation. what are the chances of actually meeting each other on the ship, unless cabin information is exchanged? any way thank you for pointing out your information! im sure i wont be the only one with champagne and/or heineken. by the way, are you on this cruise?
  23. my wife says im extra anal when it comes to booking cruises, hotels and airfare. while we're also excited to be able to see egypt, im also planning on spending a few extra days in jerusalem, and seeing if there are any tours to petra in jordan. our mutual cruise leaves athens on oct 27th. if you have the time and inclination, check out the cruise 10 days prior, from venice to athens. if youve never been to venice, i think its a must see. this leg of the b2b also offers some amazing ports. we love santorini, mykonos and dubruvnik. if you end up looking for me, im the one with a glass of champagne in one hand and an ice cold heineken in the other. we'll probably get off the ship in athens, grab a cab to the acropolis for a few hrs, then head on back for round 2. btw, im prejudiced) but i think you made the right choice. i always pick ncl because in my opinion. it gives you the best "bang for your buck"
