  1. @HAL4NOW would you do me a favor and check on Sabine's status. Thanks Roy
  2. Thank you for the TGIF report, Rich. I'll take a pass on Bald and Free but will celebrate National Smile day and the start of a long weekend in both the US and Canada. I never walked to school but did ride my bicycle a number of times. I love the Sparks quote. I've been to Dawson 2 or 3 times. No idea what the meal is. My alternative is fruit cup, blueberry soup, and ice cream as served on MS Amsterdam October 7, 2017. It was intentionally a very light dinner after a big lunch in the Pinnacle Grill. It was supposed to be a visit to Dutch Harbor but the port call was cancelled due to storms and the Pinnacle suddenly became available for lunch. Today’s care list: RIP Loretta Lynn 10/4/22 Horrific damage from Ian Western wildfires Tthose in Fiona’s wake JazzyV car issues Long term power outage for jimgev From the rotation: HAL Sailer Sister in Law with aggressive cancer therapy Marshhawk’s friend Jesse with throat cancer Status of St. Louis Sal (7/1), msmayor (5/20) and JAM37 (7/7) Heartgrove brother discharged but in hospice care Celebrations and Shoutouts: 3 days to first BHB in Everglades double jabs for grapau27 Dailyite gathering in Quebec Cruzin Terri in Barbados to 10/17 2 days for Oceansaway17 (Oasis OTS 10/9 to 10/16) 1 days for Cunnorl (Noordam 10/8 to 1/2/23) 1 days for Cruising-Along(10/29), dfish, NextOne, Richwmn, Live4cruises, SharoninAz (Nieuw Statendam 10/8 to 10/22) 1 days for HAL4NOW (Koningsdam 10/8 to 10/24) Rowsby in Hawaii until 10/28 Mister67(Clelebrity Infinity to 10/8, Lemonade cruise), LoveTheBeach (Adventure OTS to 10/8), sailingdutchy (Oosterdam to 10/10), Gail&Marty (Rotterdam to 10/15), MissG (Avalon Imagery II to 10/6; then Oosterdam 10/10 to 10/22), Dismomx5 (Rotterdam to 10/27) and Horizon Chaser1957 (Zaandam 10/1 to 12/20; Zuiderdam 12/22 to 5/12) at sea Staff Captain Sabine - Our first female Staff Captain and HAL’s likely first female Captain(I know this is a repeat but she’s worth it) Roy
  3. I do hope conditions improve but I can't help thinking it has to be better than the place you left. I definitely hope that while you are away the contractor is working very hard and possibly even carving out one good room you can return to. Roy
  4. I've been to Shanghai 3 times. In 2001 I was on a Yangtze Cruise that ended in Shangai and I have some photos from the cruise but no decent ones of Shanghai. The second was a 2004 trans-Pacific cruise on the Crystal Harmony but I have no photos at all of that cruise. A highlight of that visit was a ride on the Maglev train to the airport. The final one was on the Amsterdam October 28-29 (extended to 10/30) of 2017. We docked pretty much on the Bund in the center of town, right behind the Volendam. The first day I had booked a long tour by train to an outlying area called Westlake. A primary point of interest was a statue of a large laughing Buddha. That tour turned out to be extremely long, returning about 9:30PM, making dinner just a bag of chips and ice cream from the lido when it opened for midnight snack. The next day was easier as I did not have a tour. I took the subway across to Pudong and then once again rode the Maglev train. The top speed I saw was 184 MPH: That evening I watched the nights from Pudong, across the river I was not supposed to have seen them since we were due to leave at 6PM: Our final day in Shanghai was effectively a sea day. Both we and the Volendam (which was supposed to have left the 28th) were still in port on Monday, the 30th. We had administratively left China when we were scheduled to leave so we were unable to leave the ship and there were only a few customs people at the gangway. Reasons for our departure varied from one excuse to another but we were finally allowed to leave at 10:30 Monday. A bit of a postscript. The following July I sailed the Volendam and ran into Captain Chris Turner and asked if he had been on that cruise. His response was please don't ask; I am trying to forget that experience. It was even more problematic for me as our next port was Hong Kong where I was due to disembark and fly that day to Rome to pick up MS Prinsendam for a transatlantic for a cruise leaving the next day. Fortunately, Captain Eversen put the pedal to the metal and we were almost on time in Hong Kong. Roy

  7. Thank you for the report from Ottawa, Rich. I hope you have progress on your laptop. Ambivalent about the Mad Hatter but I like Come and Take It, and definitely appreciate Physician's Assistants. Also, I hope our Jewish Dailyites had the best possible Yom Kippur. I've been to Shanghai a few times, most recently on the Amsterdam in 2017. No idea what the meal is. My alternative is Chilled Watermelon Gazpacho, Braised Lamb Shank, and Pineapple Crisp as served on MS Amsterdam October 6, 2017: Today’s care list: RIP Loretta Lynn 10/4/22 Horrific damage from Ian Western wildfires Those in Fiona’s wake erewhon DH recovering from extraction Long term power outage for jimgev From the rotation: Cruisin Terri leak damage Strength for luvteaching’s friend Karen after Wayne’s 9/3 death Sandi’s neighbor Linda Cruising-along niece awaiting a kidney Celebrations and Shoutouts: 4 days to first BHB in Everglades Welcome home JazzyV Cruzin Terri in Barbados to 10/17 3 days for Oceansaway17 (Oasis OTS 10/9 to 10/16) 2 days for Cunnorl (Noordam 10/8 to 1/2/23) 2 days for Cruising-Along(10/29), dfish, NextOne, Richwmn, Live4cruises, SharoninAz (Nieuw Statendam 10/8 to 10/22) 2 days for HAL4NOW (Koningsdam 10/8 to 10/24) Rowsby in Hawaii until 10/28 Mister67(Clelebrity Infinity to 10/8, Lemonade cruise), LoveTheBeach (Adventure OTS to 10/8), sailingdutchy (Oosterdam to 10/10), Gail&Marty (Rotterdam to 10/15), MissG (Avalon Imagery II to 10/6; then Oosterdam 10/10 to 10/22), Dismomx5 (Rotterdam to 10/27) and Horizon Chaser1957 (Zaandam 10/1 to 12/20; Zuiderdam 12/22 to 5/12) at sea Staff Captain Sabine - Our first female Staff Captain and HAL’s likely first female Captain(I know this is a repeat but she’s worth it) Roy

  9. I've been to Dunedin/Port Chalmers twice, both times on Crystal, and both times I've met up with @erewhon. In 2018 it was the Crystal Symphony enroute from Sydney to Miami. I walked around Port Chalmers a little bit before the meeting. One thing I enjoyed was the interior of Trinity Church. Once we met they became my guests on the Symphony, having lunch in the Trident Grill, Crystal's equivalent of Dive-In. DW does not like having her photo published but here are me and DH at the table as we waited for delivery of our sandwiches: After lunch they took me into Dunedin and one of the highlights then was the train station that @StLouisCruisers has shown us. In 2020 Dunedin was our final port of call in New Zealand (come to think of it perhaps my last Crystal port of call ever since Hobart was cancelled due to storms, and I disembarked in Sydney just before all hell broke loose. This time I was taken to a brunch at a place near their residence called Luna, overlooking the harbor: I enjoyed a very nice brunch: After brunch we did a bit of shopping. I had broken a shoe lace having difficulty finding them in New Zealand. I was taken promptly the right display for the perfect pair of laces that I am still using. On the way back we stopped at Signal Hill where there was a monument to New Zealand's Centennial and a terrific view: Roy

  12. It's the full (almost) day of Yom Kippur and I wish a good Yom Kippur to all who observe it. Every day should be Teachers Day, and Do Something Nice Day; our teachers definitely do something nice every day and we should do something nice for teachers, although our schools are closed today. I cannot fully agree with the Sparks quote because words do definitely have a major impact, although they must be followed up with consistent actions. Dunedin will be a special port for many of us as it is the home of @erewhon and many of us have met them in person. Kale is ok but I'm not really a fan. 17. @kochleffel is "Happy Yom Kippur appropriate to the solemnity of the occasion or is there something else? I do not know of a local name for the space between the sidewalk and the street. In my area the median is the space between lanes on a divided highway. @HAL4NOW those are tiny balls. Roy
  18. Interesting that you had Duckpins in Maine. They have something of a spread on the East Coast, both Maine and Maryland (we have both Duckpin and Tenpin) but I never saw them in upstate New York. Roy
  19. Wow. I should book a flight to your area. It's 45F (about 7C) now but only going up to a high of 51 (11C). And a miserable rain all day. Roy
  20. Thank you for the Yom Kippur report, Rich. I'll pass on the Frappe but celebrate animals. I had a problem with golf, primarily a tendency to stand too close to the ball, especially AFTER I hit it. I like the Gibran quote. I have no idea what the meal is.
