  1. The lighthouse is not on the same route as the caves. It is on the #7 route which is along the south shore near Horseshoe. If you walk around Hamilton I suggest visiting Fort Hamilton. If NCL is running their ferry to St. George you could walk around there. One idea to consider is a 4 or 5 hour taxi tour. You could include the lighthouse as part of that.
  2. We purchased a cabana at Barefoot Beach and got a ride in a golf cart to the beach. We also got a ride from Barefoot to the central area and a ride to the Dragons Coaster.
  3. You live on a small island 300 miles by 600 miles 🙂 and need a passport to travel anywhere off the island. We can travel thousands of miles without a passport. I live in Texas and can travel 1000 miles in either direction before leaving the state. Traveling to Europe is a long expensive plane ride not a short train ride under the channel. So having a passport is exotic for many Americans.
  4. I am retired. I am never in a hurry. I have my smartphone to occupy my time if the line is long. 😀
  5. You are lucky. My local supermarket which is supposed to be a premium Tom Thumb usually only has 1 lane open staffed. Eevery now and then 2 staffed lanes are open. So most use self checkout with no line because they are forced to. I
  6. I agree about American Express. One reason for why I stay with their card.. I only had Spectrum interent for a few months before switching to fiber because their cable interent was not that great but I have to say they when I disconnected from Spectrum it was not a hassle like when I disconnected from Comcast about 10 years ago at my old home. Comcast did not want to let go.
  7. I have not used cash at all for over two years except for the barber who only takes cash. I do have a backup though. I carry $100 in cash and keep a large stash at home. Being tech savvy I do understand that the systems could go down or there could be a natural disaster. Been through several natural disasters. Here in the states we probably have more than in the UK. For hiking my tech is indispensable. GPS does not require internet. They compass on my watch has GPS redundancy, waypoints, backtracking, and in a few weeks my phone will be able to connect to a satellite in an emergency if there is no cell service. .
  8. The only large company that does not put me on hold forever is Apple Computer. And their support usually knows their stiuff. Other large compaines put me on hold forever and when they answer the call center is often clueless. The absolute worst is cell phone carriers. Small busnesses are usually okay.
  9. I agree with you and I rarely use the self checkers. Two reasons. It does cost jobs and also I kind of feel like I should be paid or get a discount for doing the work. 😀 The other reason is I like talking to the checkers.
  10. Everyone should get a passport. My read is that one person in OP’s group does not have a passport and as the cruise is November 18 they would not have the time to go through the normal application process to get a passport in time. It would have to be expedited. If that person lives in Northern Virginia as the OP does that would be the route I would go as being close to DC it could be done in a day.
  11. In those kind of cases the state department issues a blanket waiver and sends a notice to its ICE locations. That is less complicated than for an individual who misses the ship who does not have a passport who will have to contact an embassy or consulate.
  12. They would have to get an emergency passport from a US embassy or consulate.
  13. Check your email for a Captain's Club email announcing a Black Friday sale. It is in there about midway.
  14. There is something though that could stymie the will of the local Bar Harbor community. The state of Maine would have an interest in the matter and may have a say.
  15. If there is constitutional precident likely someone will file suit to challenge on those grounds. I would not be surprised if there are not lawsuits filed on some kind of grounds as we are a litigatous country. You seem to be taking Bar Harbors actions personally. I am sure they are fine with you having no interest and probably prefer you stay away but as far as dropping Bar Harbor immediately that would be be unfair to booked passengers.
  16. Tech is what has made it possible for people with mobility issues and disabilities to live a better life. Everyone on Cruise Critic is using tech. You are tech savvy. You have chosen not to live off the grid. There are no other forms of travel to consider except hiking. The tech in cruising is used in all forms of travel and has come later to cruising. Your choice will be tech, hiking or staying home. In 2018 I was in London and wanted to do the London Eye. I had a choice. Wait in line for 45 minutes to buy a ticket or buy it immediately on my smartphone. I bought it on my smartphone. I think that was smarter. .
  17. It is not allowed. Read the community guidelines. Solicitation of roommates is considered an ad.
  18. They will decide to change. I know several people who said they would never ever get a smartphone.Neighbors, friends and family members. They had flip phones. By 2018 every single one of them had a smartphone. Most of them have also dropped their landlines
  19. The cruise lines have that figured out. They set an assumed amount that passengers that pay cash tip. An algorithm. So if a guest tips less or less is reported the crew member loses out from the pool.
  20. I have been to several popular national parks that limit access to buses at certain times of the year. .
  21. I did Newport, Portland and Bar Harbor on the same cruise. Newport and Portland are much larger than Bar Harbor. Newport was a better experience because there was only one ship and not overcrowded with cruise passengers. I was able to take the public bus to all the mansion locations and there is also a oceanfront walking trail. Bar Harbor was so overcrowded that getting a ticket for a tour into Arcadia was difficult. Portland was having a festival which was nice and the lobster rolls were much cheaper than Bar Harbor. All in all a pretty nice itinerary. because the last port was two days in Bermuda. All the ports were positive experiences.
  22. Why would they dismantle to infrastructure? There will still be ships that go there. There are a large number of ferries. As I recall the inrfrastucture was not fancy. It was probably there before cruise ships. There are a limited number of ports available in the NE so I don't think getting ships back would be a problem but I don't think they will want the large ships back.
  23. A possible natural disaster, like the pandemic should be built into business plans. Companies in other busness built up reserves to weather the crisis.
