Is it ever possible to be asked if u want an upgrade from bb from Princess if u booked a specific room?for example to a mini suite?

Yes, people sometimes get calls offering them a free upgrade. Other times, people find out the have been upgraded by checking the cruise personalizer or at check in. However, most times people are not upgraded.

The default for all bookings is "Will accept upgrade" unless you specifically ask not to be upgraded. So, you and most everyone on the ship is hoping for an upgrade. It does happen and usually, it's exactly the same cabin type in a different location. True upgrades from one cabin type to another happen, but not as often.

If you marked your booking "will not accept upgrade," Princess can still contact you or your travel agent (depending on if you booked directly or through a TA) to see if you would be willing to move. If you left your booking open to upgrades, Princess will notify you or your TA about the upgrade--or possibly not, in which case you could discover it on your own or when you got to the ship.

Yes, always ask for an upgrade (as in: couldn't hurt).

From my experience as a cruise agent, here's how it's done:

On Princess:

upgrades are from Inside to higher deck Inside

ditto for ocean view cabins

rarely, if ever, to a balcony

Decisions are based on:

how full the ship is

how many times you have sailed on Princess

..and always, the luck of the draw.

Best chances on an off-season sailing (e.g. not summer or holidays)

That said, on HAL last year, we were upgraded from an

inside to a fully obstructed ocean view on an Xmas sailing!

Hope that helps.

Guess we were incredibly lucky. On our first Princess cruise--to Alaska in mid June--we were upgraded from ocean view to balcony. Good marketing ploy for the cruise line--we were totally spoiled and only book balconies now!

If you are visited by the upgrade fairy, do you have to take the upgrade?

By leaving your booking open for an upgrade (the default setting that everyone is set at if they don't mark their bookings as will not accept an upgrade), you are giving the cruise line the choice of placing you in any category above what you booked without actually notifying you (it can be in the same type of stateroom, just a higher category also). Now, if you see this happen and contact them immediately, sometimes you can get your original cabin back if you don't like what you were upgraded to or the category, but it all depends on if your original cabin has been assigned to someone else or not yet. Sometimes they are not able to place you back in your original cabin even if you catch the upgrade quickly.

Got a little over 50 days to go till my next cruise. Hoping to be visited by the upgrade fairy since this is the first time we booked a gty cat mini suite......:):):)

Bob

We booked two AD Guarantee mini-suites back in September on the Island Princess for the cruise leaving in just over a week. Yesterday we received our cabin assignments - an AB and an AC.

My wife and I always go with the "will not accept an upgrade" option. My wife does a lot of research on each ship we sail on to find the ideal cabin/location. If you allow them to arbitrarily upgrade you, you may very well find that you've been "upgraded" to a cabin you won't be happy with.

We booked Cat. AD gty on Island Princess for April 2011 in October. Got our cabin assignments in Nov., Cat. AA. Also booked Alaska cruise on Sapphire Princess in Feb. for June '10 as gty Cat. AD, upgraded to AA.

Have a great cruise!

In eight cruises with Princess the upgrade fairy has visited us once - an upgrade from a mini-suite to a full suite (sweet!). Even though we had "accept an upgrade" they still called our agent to get an OK.

You are very lucky! We booked mini suites for close to 10 years, and not until our 26th cruise with Princess did we receive an upgrade from a mini to a full suite (or any type of upgrade to be exact). Congratulations!
