miched Posted July 17, 2011 #1 Share Posted July 17, 2011 If you are lucky enough to win at Bingo are you supposed to tip the caller, seller or person running it? Are you required to fill out tax forms? Is it cash or ship board credit? Thanks .
Lsimon Posted July 17, 2011 #2 Share Posted July 17, 2011 Tipping: Never heard of anyone tipping the caller or bingo staff. The staff that runs this is the cruise staff - usually the assistant cruise director or something like that. We only won once and it was my DW who won on a free card. I hope we didn't goof on etiquette here as we didn't tip anyone. Tax forms: Nope - you're not in any taxable jurisdiction. Although this is a bit of a presumption as we've never won over $600 which I think is the trigger for reporting back on USA land. Cash or OBC: Cold hard cash (or a voucher to take to a cashier to get the cash).
Rare cruisestitch Posted July 17, 2011 #3 Share Posted July 17, 2011 Hmmm.... have heard (but not experienced personally) that large jackpots in the casino require tax forms. But the casino is operated by a subcontractor, the Bingo is operated by Celebrity. Would that make a difference? Don't know. Interesting question. Rare ORV Posted July 17, 2011 #4 Share Posted July 17, 2011 Seeing the title of this made me think of the old Susan Powter weight loss program.

I should be so lucky to win that much and want to tip;) but then again, I think I have only played Bingo once or twice over the years.

It is just that people are so tip crazy that it wouldn't surprise me if they also tipped the Captain at his reception and why wouldn't they, what is the difference and don't people usually give a gift at a reception? . powelweb Posted July 18, 2011 #7 Share Posted July 18, 2011 It's never occurred to me to tip bingo staff as in my experience, the game is run by the activities staff. My cousin was lucky to split the final prize with 1 other person several years ago, and she was handed $3,600 in cash. I don't believe that she received any tax forms, but the IRS regs are written such that the individual should still report any winnings whether or not he/she received an official tax reporting statement. mawdog Posted July 18, 2011 #8 Share Posted July 18, 2011 I won once and did not tip (honestly was too excited that I won to even think about tipping anyone). My winnings was a little over $1000 and was given cash. No tax forms were given to me to fill out :
kitty9 Posted July 18, 2011 #9 Share Posted July 18, 2011 I've won a number of jackpots on ship casinos and never received a 1099 G form except on Cunard. When I've won jackpots over the threshold of $1199, Celebrity, RCI, Princess, HAL or Carnival did not give out the forms. I thought it was rather interesting that Cunard is the only line that did. As for bingo, no, it's not like playing bingo at one of those large Indian casinos where you tip the caller or the person who brings you the winnings. Orator Posted July 18, 2011 #13 Share Posted July 18, 2011 There was a Captain who really treated DW and I very special. Were on board for 32 days and he invited us to sit at his table 3 times. One afternoon we met at al Bacco for coffee and conversation. Invited us to Bridge for several sailaways. We gave him a gift not because it was required, but because we wanted to. We became friends during that cruise and I will sail with him again. General ruke is if they have a stripe they don't get tipped.
Valley Girl of VA Posted July 20, 2011 #14 Share Posted July 20, 2011 I actually won a cruise on HAL last year and took it this year. I did have to give my SSN and am thinking that it will be reportable next year as "income" for this year.
helpthejuggler Posted July 20, 2011 #15 Share Posted July 20, 2011 All you winners should really be tipping the caller at least 20%. So with $3600 jackpots....a nice $720 per week tip :) ..I'm off to train as a bingo caller this afternoon. How hard can it be? 23, 43, 55, 1, 76.....congrats to the lady at the back...wooohoooo!!!
