Missed the ship

Um, it's not that rare of an occurrence. John posts on Facebook when folks are missing and it seems to happen fairly regularly.

I was on the DREAM in September. our first port was Nassau. 7 people did not make it back in time there.

Carnival security went into the missing passengers' safes, took their passports out, and left them with the port agent. That's what John posted on FB about this latest incident. He didn't address whether or not the passengers had given permission...

I had asked CCL Staff Mischelle Beattie about what happens if you miss the ship and your passports are left in the safe.

This is her reply back to me.

If you miss the ship and we know ahead of time that you will be missing the ship, meaning there is some sort of medical emergency or you have in some other way be in contact with us, then we will (with your permission) have security retrieve your passports and whatever else you request and give them to the port agent.

If you will be re-joining the ship the port agent will assist with those arrangements and they will be at the guest's expense.

Of all the places, Jamaica... I would not be too happy !

I would be totally the opposite! Of all the places, Jamaica would be my saviour! I'd grab a cab, and go "home" to Sandals Resorts where I am a regular, and know we would be well cared for! LOVE JAMAICA!!!

Don't laugh because on my first cruise in 1991 two women decided to buy some Ganja. Well, lets just say the drug sniffing dogs that the cops had sniffed it out quickly and ya, the women were arrested and spent some time in the free accommodations the Jamaican Prison system supplies to those who don't listen to the CD when they say DON'T DO IT!!!!

Cozumel is worse for missing people....most times I have gone there someone has missed the ship

On our last trip to Cozumel P&O were next to us in port. We heard them saying they were missing 2 passengers when they left port...a 2 week cruise.

No It is NOT!

You would have to contact the ship before sail away and give permission.

They do not go and pack your things or go in your safe for your passport.

Once again YOU have to contact the ship and GIVE permission.

Well that's kind of what I was thinking and never heard of it happening before. Thanks

This is a pretty good one. Police escort to the port and all.

Wow, great video. They had a lot of luck on their side. I can't imagine having to go through all that but what a great feeling they must of had when they finally climbed the rope ladder and made it back on the ship!!

In the Med in May there was a couple who repeatedly almost missed the ship. Truly down to the last 15 minutes, and once with about 5 minutes. They called and called for them and every night we would hear that there were 6, 2 people still out, then an announcement that everyone was on board. Finally, a different couple missed the ship in Naples and had to take a very expensive commuter flight to Messina (actually flight to Palermo and then a bus to Messina). Flights and hotels were on their own dime.

I guess they didn't want to pay for a private driver and decided to DIY! What many do not realize is that when you hire a private tour...that they assure that you will get back to the ship in time...or the tour company will get you to the next port of the ship...on their dime...

that assurance...along with the incredible convenience of having your own driver is what private tours are all about...and oh yes...there is no need to worry about transit strikes when you have a driver. Just sayin...penny wise..pound foolish is a good axiom when posters brag about how much cheaper it is to "take the train into Rome or Florence".....well, not always...

and yes, I know this thread is about Jamaica...

Those people lucked out, this couple did not and missed the ship:

Valor 2010 these folks lucked out when the ship re-docked.

I have read where pax were put on another Carnival ship that was going to the same next port or was on the way back to the US.

It's funny how people never post the story of them missing the ship, LOL

They(the ship) know if you don't reboard, and generally will pack up your stuff and leave it onshore, along with whatever is in your safe. Too bad! They should have watched the time!

I really don't see how you believe this to be true.

If the ship sets sail at 6pm, and the person misses the ship, are you suggesting that they pack the contents of the cabin, empty the safe, and leave it all on the pier before it sets sail? Think it through and you'd realise this isn't possible.

I took a tour with a guy in Panama once, who had a travel insurance policy for his customers. If you missed the ship, it would pay for your hotel and a flight back to Miami, and incidental expenses. I thought that was great, and wish more private tour operators would do the same thing! He said he'd never had to use it (good thing!).

From my experience, it has never not happened, where passengers are missing and the ship will sail without them, where their passports (with or without permission) have not been collected and given to the Port Agent. Belongings no, but security will search the cabin and the safe and if the passports are found hand them over.
Missing the ship is really very rare. It does happen but people on these boards make is sound like they leave 4-5 people at every port.

Ships will wait for some time depending on the situation.

It’s not that rare. I have been on 5 different cruises and out of those 5 cruises, I know that on at least 2 of them people were left behind. On the last one, the CD made a statement that we left 2 in Progresso. I am hoping that they made it to Cozumel to re-met the ship. And even in Cozumel there were a couple of stragglers who should have been left! And the ship DOES NOT have wait for anyone, unless it’s a Carnival sponsored excursion. My BFF has this mis-conception. I keep telling her that I wouldn’t put it to the test if I were her. Go to YouTube/Google and search and you will see all sorts of video's of those being left behind....
This is why I don't understand why people will go to the trouble of getting a passport and then leave it in their safe. What good does it do you there? You are in a foreign country, take it with you.

Sewut
We were actually told to NOT take our passports in Mexico by the CD. We were told to only take the S & S card and and a photo ID.
I heard there were 5 people that missed the ship leaving Jamaica. What happens to you when this occurs? What if your passport is still on the ship? You have to pay for a hotel and a flight to the next port or maybe even back to Miami? This is a scarry thought although I do understand it is their own darn fault . Propbably spent too much time in Margaritaville
if your ship is going to a port that requires a passport, you are kinda screwed.

you need to make your way back to the states. you just have to prove your citizenship, or come through arizona.

We've missed the ship departing  out of Cozemel. Wife and I were haggling at a jewelry store, and I thought we had an hour still. Since the deal was not working out, I said we need to go, and that's when they said, "Oh, the ship is already leaving!"

This was on a Princess Cruise. The store called the dock, and we hopped into a taxi to the dock. Some Princess Cruise folks told us to get down the dock and there happened to be a boat docked. $20 each and these folks would take us to the ship. We have the picture of the back of the ship :D. We pulled along side, and the wife and I climbed up the side of the ship on a rope ladder, with a harness around us. That's not on the ships excursion listing.

Bad or good thing was, the captain of the ship knew us. We redid wedding vows a couple of days before, and he did the ceremony. That might be the only reason we were able to get on the ship the way we did.

We were told, it does happen a lot. And especially in Cozemel.

Next cruise, wife said she is watching the time, and no more drinks.

The first and only time I saw pier runners was in Ketchikan Alaska. They started pulling up the gangway ramp and stairs. I was watching these two women waiting for their husbands who were in the shops. I knew they were going to be in trouble.

Then the women went to get them. They were running as the crew were finishing pulling up the last part of the gangway.

I had to stop and think about how many drinks I had because I never thought I would see this in Alaska let alone, men shopping and being late. :)

i'm assuming you meant to add "by the cruises end at the point of debarkation".

I was told by a US Embassador the CD is wrong. (And considering the Embassador's staff will be helping you get home while the CD is off to the next port, I'm more inclined to believe the Ambassador.) :D;)
