No formal wear required in Blu (or other specialty restaurants) - just MDR

Most people don't but if you are home you can always go home and change before going to that 5 star restaurant. You can't do that on a ship if you havent received your luggage...

...or if you didn't bother packing appropriate attire because you decided the dress code doesn't apply to you, which I think you would agree is more often the case than is lost or late receipt of luggage.

Yes, X does say their policy for Blu is smart casual for above for all nights (including formal). But on our most recent cruise (11/30 Silhouette) we found that the folks in Blu were very well dressed on formal nights. In fact, it appeared there were a lot more tuxes and formal dresses in Blu then we saw around the rest of the ship.

I guess the question would be....would you wear shorts to a 5 star resturant on shore? Then why would you think its OK on the ship?

Actually, all of the nicer restaurants I have ever gone to (with a couple of exceptions - Ritz Carlton Dining Room in Boston) request smart casual dress - Charlie Trotter in Chicago - no tie required; Greystone in Napa Valley - totally smart casual; Marmalade in San Juan also smart casual

If you are talking about the first night which I was, I can agree if you have cruised before. It is a common problem for those who have never cruised. I don't think the problem of shorts in the MDR is a big problem on nights other than the first night...Posters can give their own anecdotes but I think its rare...

There are two common threads in many of the posts here.

1. What is the minimum I can GET AWAY with?

2. I do NOT care care what others think or how my behavior affects them!

Maybe this problem goes far beyond dress codes on cruise ships?

to me, the problem is being told what to do by total strangers. i got no problem following the dress guidelines/codes - i do take issue when it is suggested that i am a slob because i don't like to dress formally and/or argues that dressing up equates to class/good taste/refinement, etc...

smart casual in all venues except MDR suits me just fine.... and anyone who enjoys dressing up - go for it - it's your vacation and you should do what you enjoy within the rules/guidelines... it's just that respect and common courtesy go both ways.

And as far as the lame excuse for the extra checked bag: All costs for two persons

Cruise Fare balcony cabin $3000

Airfare $600 (really low)

Excursions $300

Liquor $300

Gratuities $300 (probably low)

Casino $100

Specialty Restaurant $100

Total $4700

Extra checked bag $35 or 0.8% of cruise cost

Wewere on the Silhouette Dec. 12 sailing and Blu was smart casual on all nights.

The problem with resort casual is that everyone has a different idea of what this means. The guidelines basically say pants with no rips and a shirt with a collar. About 1/3 of the men show up with old wrinkled khakis and an old faded golf shirt or maybe even a madras sport shirt from the 1960s. Like I previously said the same clothes that most men wear when they mow their lawn or go to your local McDonalds. I am sorry but I just don't see this as resort casual. No it does not affect the taste of my food but it certainly takes away from the idea that Celebrity is an upscale cruise experience.

The baggage fees have nothing to do with why we no longer take clothes for formal evening in the MDR.

The appeal of playing Mr. and Mrs. Dressup wore off a long time ago for us. We also found that the formal night meals in the MDR are really not that special any more.

The real reason for us is that we usually combine land vacations with a cruise. When we are travelling for four or five weeks we are not about to bring clothes/shoes that are only worn for a few hours on three days of our trip. We enjoy the freedom that packing light gives us. But, we would not consider attending MDR on formal nights..we find an alternate venue in order to respect the dress code.

We are not loyal to any one particular cruise line. But, more often than not lately we find ourselves booking Celebrity because of their smoking policy, their dining options on formal nights, and their fabulous Solstice class ships.

I agree that the baggage fee excuse is lame-o

But it doesn't change the fact that smart casual is the dress code everywhere except mdr and it doesn't make me a slob for being glad

Smart casual is not the dress code everywhere except the MDR. Smart casual is requested in Specialties and the theater, no where else. Basically for the rest of the ship anything goes...

Most of us do not travel for four or five weeks so playing Mr. and Mrs. Dressup is our only escape. DH could rent a tux. DW probably takes some nice pants suits.

you are simply buying the wrong shoes

The arguments both sides are silly, but entertaining

Girls don't have the comfort options that dudes have - there really aren't any attractive, comfortable women's dress shoes - BUT if formal wear were required for Blu, I'd find something that would work and dress formally. But it's not, so i don't have to....and it doesn't make me a slob or tasteless or classless to feel that way - that is my only point...

And as far as the lame excuse for the extra checked bag:

If someone cites baggage fees as a reason for packing light for a cruise, that is their business and absolutely nobody elses.

Dress code bullies simply don't have the power or the influence to determine what other people pack - or wear - on their vacations.

Sadly, some people are having a hard time accepting their lack of power.

I am not looking for power. Just pointing out how absurd silly excuses are. Just come out and say it - I refuse to follow dress code guidelines and I dont care what anyone else thinks!
