Uniall Posted July 24, 2014 #7002 Share Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) According to this video http://www.youreporter.it/video_Concordia_barca_vicino_al_convoglio_fermata_da_polizia a boat was stopped by police because they breached the 3 nm exclusion zone around CC. Sure, they need to do that on grounds of safety, but this raises to the non-mariner in me the question: Which police and on ground of which country's legislation? How is such exclusion zone communicated to boats which happen to be nearby? How could they have known? Layman's questions, I know. International Maritime Law recognizes treble types of zones of maritime jurisdiction: High Seas, Territorial Waters, and International Sea Lanes inside Territorial Waters. On the High Seas infractions of Interantional Maritime Law may be enforced by police or naval vessels of any nation state. In Territorial Waters infractions in Interantional Maritime Law (and local Maritime Law) may be enforced by police or naval vessels of that nation. In Interantional Sea Lanes within Territorial Waters International Maritime Law may be enforced by police or naval vessels of any nation state and Local Marttime Laws may be enforced by police or naval vessels of the Local Maritime Law as long as it does not conflict with interantional Maritime Law. SomeBeach Posted July 24, 2014 #7003 Share Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) SB ... Strange that the Pand O Ventura did not show up in that area as it was headed to Livrono today along with Norwegian Epic and Aida Blu! Sid, with where my zoom is set it might not have been in my screen shot area. I just highlighted on a few ships that were kind of close. Now the mention of the "Polizia" is interesting. The little route triangles on my screen showed a "boat" outside of the lines, a little back from Concordia. I highlighted on it and it said Polizia. My thought was, "well in this parade they can't be giving out a speeding ticket." ;) (If I recall correctly it was in the area on my map that says Arcipelago Tuscano.) A question was asked by Gator about if anyone is on board. It is my understanding that yes, there is "crew" on board, among them Nick Sloane. They are using the control room to monitor systems on Concordia. Edited July 24, 2014 by SomeBeach

Rochesterboatingdotcom Posted July 24, 2014 #7008 Share Posted July 24, 2014 They must have installed some lifeboats on the Concordia for the people onboard. With all those boats in convoy, I don't think there would be a need for a lifeboat. Life jackets and life rafts, yes.
SomeBeach Posted July 24, 2014 #7009 Share Posted July 24, 2014 They must have installed some lifeboats on the Concordia for the people onboard. BE, the reason I say that I understood there was to be someone on board is that some time ago there was an interview with Mr Sloane. He said something along the line of believing in the choice that was made to move her out and he would feel safe being on board. I have looked for confirmation of who may or may not be on board but can't find anything confirming it. Again, that's why I said "my understanding." I figure if anyone can find out for sure they'll let us know or more specifically let me know.

Rare cgolf1 Posted July 24, 2014 #7011 Share Posted July 24, 2014 Just noticed that CC's speed was 2.8 knots. Originally I thought they were going to go at 2 knots maximum for what I assumed was for the safety of the CC. Or was that just an average speed they were going for? Can't remember where I read this, thought it was an email with translation from an Italian website but no luck there. I do remember 17 bcoz it's an odd number. I'm guessing they would all be specialists in their areas of expertise! Including a ballasting team with pumps at the ready...stuff like that.. . SomeBeach Posted July 24, 2014 #7013 Share Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) Just noticed that CC's speed was 2.8 knots. Originally I thought they were going to go at 2 knots maximum for what I assumed was for the safety of the CC. Or was that just an average speed they were going for? I just saw that too. Everything that was said indicated that 2.2 would be the speed. I wondered if they were feeling more confident about the situation, enough to increase the speed. BE, another point. Isn't the command center on CC? Wouldn't someone need to be on board to monitor that? Thanks aplmac. You posted as I started posting. SomeBeach Posted July 24, 2014 #7014 Share Posted July 24, 2014 I noticed last night (which was very early this morning across the pond) that there was another indicator of a vessel. I checked its name, Jason, as it didn't seem to be going anywhere at the time. Today it was still there, now seeming to ride along with the convoy. I went to vessel info on it. It's a French tugboat. sidari Posted July 24, 2014 #7015 Share Posted July 24, 2014 Aplmac .... 17 onboard, surprised at that as that number is the one missing from Italian ship deck numbers! SB ... I mentioned Ventura incase it was in range, two of my friends are currently onboard on their first cruise so it is somewhat annoying that the ship webcam is still showing them in Genoa ... :( They are currently heading to Naples. Thanks to everyone for the links to pictures and the drone video, been out all day so just catching up.

Sid, after you mentioned it I scanned up this morning and Ventura was indeed in Livorno. Matter of fact I just looked again and she has left port, destination showing Naples and currently cruising along at 8.8. Don't think they will intersect at a point where Concordia will be visible to them. Course if it's their first cruise that's probably for the best. ;) Epic has also left Livorno and is heading to Cannes. Another that showed up is Serenade of the Seas, heading to Civitavecchia. At some point Concordia and Serenade will pass each other. (Just looked again and Serenade has somewhat changed course and doesn't look like it will come down the same path it was on.) Checked on Jason too. Seems to be dropping back some. Edited July 24, 2014 by SomeBeach

I remember a quote from Nick Sloane way back at the beginning where he said when the Concordia left Giglio he would be on the bridge. That would be purely symbolic of course since all the action is in the control center.
sidari Posted July 24, 2014 #7020 Share Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) SB .. My friends are well aware of Concordia and what has been happening with it luckily, being in the same occupation he like me is used to dealing with unpleasant issues shall we say. Hopefully they will both be enjoying their first time on a cruise ship although he did see the Ruby Princess in Liverpool a short time back so he knows just how big Ventura would have been ... :) I think that it will now be to dark to actually see Concordia other than seeing a lit cruise ship go by. The Grand Holiday looks like it may pass by Concordia on its current course. BE ... I guess they used the minimum crew needed to keep watch on the big screens inside the control hut up on top of Concordia and to check that the ship stays within its buoyancy limitations. bigeck Posted July 24, 2014 #7021 Share Posted July 24, 2014 Grand Holiday cruise ship just passed but it's too dark to see anything from the ships web cam. SomeBeach Posted July 24, 2014 #7022 Share Posted July 24, 2014 TPP Update: After approximately 30 hours of navigation, the Concordia has travelled for 63 nautical miles at an average speed of 2 knots. At the moment, the convoy is located between Isola d’Elba and Corsica. The sea is calm, while the wind has a North/North East direction with a speed of approximately 13 knots. The assessments performed on sponsons and they connections – cables, chains and strand-jacks - have given positive results. The climate on board is calm and the navigation proceeds without problems. There are no signs of environmental pollution; environmental monitoring by public institutions are in progress, as well as samplings carried out by the marine biologists of University La Sapienza that have been appointed by Costa Crociere and the Titan Micoperi consortium. For tomorrow marine conditions are forecasted good, with light winds coming from the South. With these conditions, the arrival of the Concordia in Genoa Prà-Voltri port is expected for Sunday Juky 27th at 3 in the morning.
