Rita's Cantina being replaced by Margaritaville

Recommended Posts

Since I am not a fan of Mexican food, but have enjoyed the atmosphere of Margaritavilles in various locations (including Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and the Mohegan Sun Casino in CT), I would definitely be pleased if this rumor bore fruition. Just not sure that the space used for Rita's Cantina on some of the revitalized ships would be sufficient to provide a true Margaritaville experience. There are always rumors floating around out there and this may just be another one that fails to materialize. It does seem very soon for RCI to be changing a venue that only recently was thought to be popular enough to justify adding it to more ships in their fleet.

I have no issues with this at all. I think Margaritaville is a natural fit onboard a cruise ship and could liven things up a bit. I will certainly go there when I cruise again.

As long as there are still plenty of included "free" food choices, then by all means adding some brand names could actually help keep the basic cruise fare down by adding more revenue from folks who dont mind spending a bit extra while onboard.

Oh, I hope they stay a little classier and go with Target. Isn't Wal-Mart more of the Carnival crowd  now I will duck

RCI could do worse than to replace the current concessionaire that operates their gift shops and for whom the words "customer satisfaction" and "common sense" aren't in their or their employees' vocabularies.

This would be great news! Rita'a was a huge disappointment for me.

I agree.... Granted, I only went one time, but it just seemed like generic institutional fare, not freshly prepared by someone with a skilled hand. :(

I heard today that RCI has done a deal with Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville and they'll be replacing Rita's Cantina. As yet there's no time frame for when this will be happening.

I'm personally disappointed by this, I'd rather be able to eat at different places whilst on a cruise. Oh well.

Dang it all! Another missed opportunity for a self service laundry.

Gotta keep up with the Joneses....uh, Carnival. They have Guy Fieri's burger joint so I guess RCCL needs brand names. You know if I wanted a land based experience, I would stay on land.

You are showing your biased ignorance and making a jab at carnival just for the sake of making a jab at carnival. Based on your signature you have obviously been on carnival as well as Royal.

You therefore know that Royal has had Johnny Rockets YEARS before carnival added branded venues just this year.

Also, you can not find a Guy's Burger Joint, Hasbro Game Show experience, George Lopez's Comedy Club on land.

Your post is just pure vitriol towards carnival.

Get a grip. First of all I did not see this as a jab to Carnival. Second, unless you're lost, this is the RCI board and not Carnival. You might want to move back to the Carnival board if you want to feel the Carnival love. Not a lot of it here.;)

Just little over the top aren't you? Save the word vitriol for the political blogs. There's no vitriol here. This all for fun.:)

Mmm-hmmm.

Haven't been to Margaritaville... wait. I might have had a margarita in there at TI Las Vegas. It's all a big blur, really :D at least I haven't eaten there. I think... ;)

I am hoping to try Rita's before it gets changed. Considering we ALWAYS do tourist traps like Hard Rock, Planet Hollywood and Bubba Gump, Margaritaville will go down just fine with us.

Oh heck, we'd even go for Burger King (don't have it here, closest is in the neighboring country )

As a Parrot Head I think that Maragitaville coming on any ship would be awesome! I checked Jimmy's website for news update and didn't see anything though. :(

PS

Not planning on doing Rita's on this trip or any other.

It was a joke silly goose.

If Margaritaville is coming, what are they doing with Johnny Rockets. The two restaurants are redundant!

Nuh uh... Doo Wop burgers aren't the same as Tropical burgers. Haha.

Large company like RCCL BRANDS with another big player Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville...passangers will be able to relate to the Margaritaville name and go there...Rita Cantina...just another example in this day of BIG NAME OVER RUNNING LITTLE OR UNKNOWN NAME...we may not like it but it's 2012 big time business...whats' next...hello Mcdonalds or Burger King and good bye Johnny Rockets...

While the "Royal Caribbean" brand sells cruises...I don't think it does much to sell food....the lines of people waiting at Starbucks every time I am on Oasis is proof that people want a product they are familiar with and are willing to pay for it. All I can say is that Margaritaville at universal Studios does great and has lines of people at it all the time waiting....you may ask the same question there....doesn't the "Universal Studios" brand sell itself.....well obviously not as well as Starbucks...Margaritaville....Emerils....Hard Rock....Buba Gump...ect.

Or could it be they are just looking for a decent cup of coffee....something hard to find on the ship;)

The funny thing is that I actually look forward to lousy cruise ship coffee. I never get it anywhere else and it is just one more thing that makes cruising so special. Walking up on deck at 5 AM with that bad cup of coffee is pretty close to heaven for me.:)

And there was a time when sources were swearing up and down that Radiance was getting a Johnny Rockets to replace the Seaview Cafe. And what did Radiance get instead.....? Oh yeah... a Rita's Cantina! :D

The Seaview Cafe on Radiance was actually replaced by the Samba Grill, a Brazilian Steakhouse.

Starbucks, Johnny Rockets, Dreamworks, Coach, Guess and soon Margaritaville. Add Celebrity's Apple, Reidel and Rosetta Stone relationships to the mix and you have to wonder whether RCI is more interested in building cruise ships or floating franchises/corporate alliances? It's not the sea calling; it's your local mall!

So true! They seem to make it work though.

Having frequented both restaurants on more than one occasion, I certainly can't agree with your comparison. The two are totally different not only in their menus but in their ambience as well. I am sure that both could co-exist quite successfully on the same ship.:)

Don't worry. At present it is only an unsubstantiated rumor and even if it does eventually prove to be true, it is unlikely to be implemented in the near future.:)
